I just returned from my first Silver Strike Tournament and I want to tell you how much I enjoyed it. I have been a member for three years and attended my first convention last July. Sev-eral members told me about the tournament that was scheduled for January and how much fun it always is. When I got home, I began making plans to attend.

Having never attended one, I didn’t know quite what to expect, but it was everything I’d hoped for. I especially enjoyed renewing friendships with those I’d met at last year’s convention and getting acquainted with the rest...a great bunch of people! My wife and I took our grandson Caleb, who is 23 years old and who became a new Silver Strike member shortly before the trip. It was his first trip to Vegas and we will always cherish the special moments and time we spent with him while there. The whole event was just great from the Friday evening meal to the awards presentation Sunday afternoon. I especially enjoyed the trade session on Saturday evening. It was well attended and I got to make several trades. The tournament was lots of fun and it was exciting for me to win fifth place. I am already looking forward to the convention in June and the 2007 tournament. I just want to thank all those who were in charge of planning the event. Fantastic job!

Club Strike 2006 Winner! This years Silver Strike coin design contest was a huge success. Over forty designs were submitted, which made it extremely difficult to select just one. The team of judges took their time and narrowed the choices down to two finalists. After selecting the winning design, the judges agreed there were many excellent designs and choosing just one was overwhelming. It is with great pleasure and admiration that I formally announce the winning artist is Peter Van der Kar. For those members who don’t know Peter, let me give you a little background. He is a charter member. He was our “First Newsletter Editor” and continues to write articles for the newsletter. Peter has a table at the convention every year were he sells strikes and is always readily available to answer any question a striker may have. Please don’t hesitate to stop by Peter’s table during convention and let him know how much you appreciate the hard work he put in on the really great design for this year’s club strike. Congratulations, to you Peter. The mint is finalizing the details for this year’s coin. Until the artwork is complete, we will keep all of you in suspense. However, you will not be disappointed. Our May newsletter will have the winning design as well as the order form for you to purchase our “Club Strike for 2006.” We have limited the mintage again this year to 400. Help us celebrate our “Seventh Anniversary” and the growth of our club.

Non-Nevada Strikes, by Christie Gregory

South Dakota Happy March to everyone! Spring is around the corner and the convention will be here before we know it. I hate winter but the annual Silver Striker’s Tournament makes January tolerable. If you weren’t there, you really missed a great time. If you were there, you know what I’m talking about. Enough said! Thanks to everyone who makes this event such a success. South Dakota had a bunch of generic strikes. One casino, Grand River in Mobridge, had a series with their logo. We’ll start with the generic strikes. We have 41 ge-neric Deadwood strikes documented. The series of five Indian Chiefs was the first release. The Wildlife Series was next. This is a set of four. They used the Western Series of five and then moved on to the Lawmen Series of six. All the above strikes have Mt. Rushmore on the face and no mint mark. One lone strike with Historic Deadwood on the face and Days of 76 on the reverse was released somewhere in the mix. It has no mint mark. Another oddball strike with the Mt. Rushmore logo may be an error strike. It has the same Indian Rider that’s on the generic Colorado strike with a CC mint mark. A set of Millennium strikes was released with Poker Alice, Deadwood Dick, Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane on the reverses. They have the G mint mark. This is where they go a little crazy with the motorcycles. The first five were the Sturgis 1997 set. The faces have Mt Rushmore pictured. The set consists of the HD Duo-Glider, HD Sturgis 1980, AJS 1961, Indian Model H and Cleveland 1929. These have no mint mark. Next came the Gypsy Classics 1998 set which depicts a HD Fatboy 1990, Crocker 1938, Indian V-Twin Chief, HD Knucklehead 1936 and HD Sportster 1957. This set has B H Novelty on the rim plus an S mint mark. The last set was a 60th Anniversary with Mt Rushmore on the face. They are a 1997 Sportster, 1912 Silent Gray Fellow, 1926 Peashooter, 1915 J-11 and 1936 Knucklehead. These have Black Hills Novelty and one dollar on the rim with a G mint mark. All of the motor-cycles look like seven dollar strikes and I can’t say for sure if they actually came out of a strike machine. Maybe someone can tell me more about these and I’ll pass the info along in the next article. Grand River Casino had one set of four strikes with the GDC mint mark. These are the Wildlife Series. Next issue will be the state of Wisconsin which has an extensive list with some interesting strikes. Thanks to all who looked me up at the tournament to tell me they enjoyed my arti-cles. I really appreciated it. Until next time…Happy Striking! Christie Gregory

A Call to Convention Volunteers

We lost one of The Silver Strikers Club biggest boosters on Halloween 2005.

Les Hassel, after suffering several illnesses and complications from diabetes, left us in 2005.

I remember Les being so fired up after learning about the silver strikes. He helped us get many of the holes filled in our collection. After I learned that he had just retired from being a professional photographer, I asked him to be the Club's photog-rapher. He readily agreed and he added that "touch of class" to all the pictures that were taken after he came on board. He took the picture of the first group of offi-cers and then also the second group. We would have had to pay mucho bucks to anyone else to take those pictures, but Les would not let me reimburse him for any of his expenses.

Les, you left us too soon. You will be missed so much, good friend.

We need your help at the 2006 Convention. Convention time is fast approaching. The Silver Strikers Club will have a membership table again this year. We want to promote our Club to all of the Convention attendees. At the table, we will be signing up new members, collecting membership dues, and taking orders for Club Rosters. We will also be there to answer any questions visitors have about the Silver Strikers Club. It’s a good time to start thinking about volunteering. We are asking that Club members volunteer to take a turn manning the membership table for one or two-hour shifts. This will enable us all to assist in promoting the Club, and at the same time, still enjoy the rest of the Convention. The table needs to be staffed from opening to closing, for three days, so we will need all the support we can get. Please try to find a way to fit a one or two-hour shift into your Convention plans. Let me know what days and hours you would be available. It would be a big help to have alternate times, so scheduling can be com-pleted. Please notify me at the following address:
