Shutterbug Times THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF

THE

OLYMPIA CAMERA CLUB August 2013

President’s Corner by Rosalind Philips

I am writing this from the sunny and warm east coast. I have

been here all week visiting my family in New York City and Northampton Mass. What has

struck me is how different the colors are here from the Pacific Northwest. The greens, the sky,

even the clouds are different. We were driving north on Westside Drive toward the George

Washington Bridge and the Cumulus clouds were huge castles starting to turn into thunderheads.

They looked like extreme graduated filters!

July and August have been busy months for the Olympia Camera Club. We had the wonderful

field trip to the Palouse, Lakefair fireworks, the Thurston County Fair and the Air Show at the

Olympia Airport. We have the planning pot-luck picnic coming up on August 24th at Priest Point

Park. Please plan to attend so that you can help plan exciting meetings and activities for the club

over the next year.

Both Digital Group and Critique Group meet as usual this month. Our speaker for the September

24th general meeting, David Jennings, will be speaking about underwater photography. The Octo-

ber 22 general meeting will be held at the River’s Edge restaurant for our annual banquet and

scavenger hunt. See details later on in the newsletter. I hope that everyone will participate. Jim

Crocker, the Lacey Costco Photo supervisor, will be speaking to us at the November 26 general

meeting on how to get the most out of Costco photo services. Please email me your questions

([email protected]) ahead of time so that Jim will have an idea of what we are inter-

ested in learning about.

There are lots of great posts happening on the club’s Facebook page. This is the place to post

equipment for sale, announcements like “Anyone want to meet me at the kissing statue for sunset

pics?”, articles and webinar. So please like us at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Olympia-

Camera-Club/242680499095549.

Thank for being active members in the club and I hope to see you at least one of the meetings

this month.

Planning Picnic (for 2013-14)

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

Priest Point Park Park, Shelter #1

5:30—8:30 pm

At the planning picnic the everyone is encouraged

to make suggestions and give ideas for activities,

field trips, etc and topics/guest speakers. This dis-

cussion helps in the setting and planning of pro-

grams that are of most interest for the upcoming

general meetings and other activities for the year. This is a favorite event and a great pot luck picnic, so bring

a dish to share, your appetite (plates, utensils, napkins provided), and your ideas/suggestions!

DIRECTIONS: Priest Point Park is located at 2600 East Bay Drive NE, travel north on East Bay Drive . Follow

East Bay Drive from 4th Avenue and take first right into the park and follow one-way lane (see map for blue

arrow for turn and the red circle marks shelter #1). We will gather at Priest Point Park Shelter #1, the Rose

Garden. It is a covered picnic shelter that has water, electricity, large flat grill, and parking.

The Palouse Follow Up by Frank Townsend [email protected]

Fourteen members of our club spent the

weekend with Jack Lien in the Palouse in July and

what a trip it was. We did everything but sleep. We

all arrived Friday in time for an incredible spaghetti

dinner then traveled to a local grain elevator to do

some night shooting. There was a bit of cloud cover

and a fire in Pullman put some orange in the sky, but

there was an incredible amount of stars, including

the Milky Way, showing. We tried silhouettes and

painting with light on the grain elevator and a nearby

tree, turning in around 1 AM. Later that morning,

around 5:30 we joined for a tour around the Palouse,

stopping at several spots to shoot landscapes you can

only see in the Palouse, old trucks, wagon wheels,

and an abandoned house. This went on until about 8

PM when we returned to Jack's for a cook out, then

off for more night shooting. This time the sky was

more clear and the Milky Way more pronounced,

again we turned in around 1 AM. The hardiest three

of us were up at sunrise to venture to Steptoe Butte.

This was an incredible trip made all the

more fun by the fellowship shared through our club.

Jack has offered to provide the club with dates of

the weekend photo opportunities in the Palouse in

September and October, Plowing Bee, etc. If you

are interested contact one of the club's board mem-

bers and we will follow through.

Thurston County Fair

by Terri Townsend

Another Thurston County Fair has ended and

it was a great success at least for our Club. While I

don't have actual numbers as to how many club

members entered the Open Class Photography com-

petition, I am fairly certain that each member that

entered received at least one ribbon. Congratula-

tions to all who brought home rewards, after viewing

them many times I feel they were all well earned.

With over 420 images entered there was quite a few

competing images to overcome.

We all know how good Olympia Camera

Club photographers are so perhaps more impressive

than the photographic skills the club displayed was

the volunteer effort the club put forth.

All told there were over 25 members who

took part either the weekend before the fair or by

taking a shift during the fair. Between the intake,

judging, hanging, shift work, and pickup an incredi-

ble 270 hours of work went into bringing the Open

Class Photography to the Fair and the public. These

figures don't even count the meetings with the Fair

Board Allynn Balch attended or the preregistration

work Jodi Cox did.

So many members provided so much help

that listing all would be difficult and every job per-

formed was just as important to the goal as any other

job so I don't want to single any one person or any

one job. I think I've done than personally, but Frank

and I are both immensely grateful for everyone who

helped and we are proud the way the club supported

the Fair.

Jack Lien Tours by Frank Townsend [email protected]

Jack is leading a tour in La Jolla California

to photograph birds and more in January 2014 and a

Wildlife Tour in Yellowstone during May 1 through

5. If you are interested in either of these trips you

should contact Jack directly at [email protected].

Jack is also considering special tours to both loca-

tions for club members only, with a special rate of

$200 per person to cover his expenses. I will be

out of town from the end of August until late Octo-

ber but you can reach me via email if you want be

to be a go between, you can contact Rosalind, or

Jack direct. If you have ever thought of a photo

tour by a professional you will never find an oppor-

tunity at this price, so you may want to give some

serious thought.
