Psychiatric patient reunitedwith family after 14 years

patient who went missing fromhis village in Bihar in 2004,was reunited with the familyby Udavum Karangal (NGOwith office in 460, 25th Street,NSK Nagar, Arumbakkam)last month.

He had been rescued byUdavum Karangal from thestreets of Coimbatore in 2011,and had sincebeen living in itsdestitute home in Thiruver-kadu in Chennai.

According to S. Vidyaakar(Founder, Udavum Karangal),for a prolonged period afterrescue, Shanbu remained non-co-operative and uncommuni-cative.

Though his physical and

mental condition improved, hewas not able to disclose anydetails about his whereaboutsor family till 3 months back.

He finally broke his silencein August and said that hewas from a village calledChotta Baisana in Bihar, andhad 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

The NGO managed to con-tact one of the brothers namedGowrishankar who was livingin Rasipuram, Tamilnadu.

He came to Udavum Ka-rangal to take back Shambuwith him.

Gowrishankar said thatShambhu was married withtwo children and had run awayfrom home in 2004, and thefamily had lost all hopes ofseeing him again.

increase in property taxSir, It was reported last week

in Anna Nagar Times thatabout 100 residents of AnnaNagar Western Extn. havesubmitted written appeals toRegional Deputy Commis-sioner, Chennai Corporation,Shenoy Nagar protestingagainst the 50% to 120% in-crease in property tax.

I wish to clarify that the in-crease is not just 100% butmore than 10 times in the caseof a few residents in Zone 7under wards 88 and 90 in AnnaNagar Western Extn.

For example, as per the no-tice received by the owner of W110, the half yearly tax hasbeen increased from Rs. 458 toRs. 7,495 (more than 16times). Similarly in the case ofW 186, the tax has been in-

creased from Rs. 1,094 to Rs.11,880 (11 times). There aremore such cases in Zone 7.

Anna Nagar Western Exten-sion Association has alreadyrepresented to the Chief Min-ister and Principal Secretaryto Govt. (Municipal Adminis-tration and Water SupplyDept.) againstsuch exorbitantincrease. The Association, ifnecessary will take legal re-course on behalf of its ag-grieved members.

Kitchen waste let into sewage drain in AK BlockSir, There is a commercial

kitchen functioning in AK90(off 10th Main Road, AnanNagar) that serves packagedfood to households, bachelorsand students undergoingcoaching in IAS and othercoaching institutions in thevicinity.

It is causing lots of prob-lems to the other 25 familiesliving on the street.

The kitchen functions al-most round-the-clock, and thewaste is let into the sewagedrain leading to frequentblocks and overflow of sewagewater on the street. The otherproblems faced by the resi-dents include emission offumes from the kitchen, fire

hazard, noise pollution andfrequent blocking of the car-riageway by pick-up vehicles.

Environment-friendly ONGCbuildings nearing completion

the 5 blocks ofbuildings started in2015 on the vacantland in ONGC Quar-ters (Park Road, AnnaNagar Western Extn.)is nearing completion.

They have beencategorized as ‘GreenBuildings’ as theyincorporateenvironment-friendly features.

The 1st block with 3floors will houseONGC offices, thesingle-storey 2ndblock will be let out toshops, 44 flats in the11-storey 3rd block will include bacheloraccommodation and guesthouses for ONGC officials, the 4th block will house recreation facilitiesand the 18-storey 5th block comprises of 66 flats for ONGC staff.

Underground water will not be tapped through well or bore wells,and only water supplied by Metrowater will be used. The projectincludes a sewage treatment plant, and the treated water will be usedfor flushing in bathrooms, watering plants and other purposes.

Instead of burnt bricks, eco-friendly AAC blocks (Autoclaved AeratedConcrete) have been used in the construction. These blocks are madefrom industrial waste.

Only CFL and LED bulbs will be used for lighting to save energy.

A baby Kingfisher separated from its motherwas rescued by a resident from N Block 24thStreet and handed over to the Society for thePrevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) on Nov.5. At about 3 p.m on Nov. 5, R. Rajendran (AnimalRescue Inspector)received a call from K. Nithish(resident of N 331) about a chick which looked likea baby kingfisher, sitting huddled near the gate ofhis house. As advised by Rajendran, Nithishmanaged to catch the bird and kept it in a card-board box in his house.

A SPCA staff member came to Nithish’s houseto take the bird, and handed it over to the ForestDept. in Velachery.

The personnel of Fire and Rescue ServicesDept., will not engage in the rescue of snakessighted in neighbourhood areas or wild birdsfound in distress. The decision has been takensince the staff are not trained to handle suchrescue operations and instances of the han-dlers getting bitten by the snakes have beenreported. The deaths of injured birds have alsobeen reported.

The 100-feet stretch of Park Road in front of KM Star Apartments, AnnaNagar Western Extension is in a battered condition.

The surface is uneven and poses danger to motorists. The road wasfurther damaged during the recent spell of heavy rains. Vehicles are forcedto slow down on the stretch leading to frequent traffic jams.

The residents of KM Star Apartments told Anna Nagar Times that theloose gravels cause a dust storm each time a vehicle passes-by.

They have appealed to Chennai Corporation to mill the surface and relaythe road before the monsoon.
