WHAT IS ARES?

A FREE RUNNING MODEL OF SUBMARINE

De-risking Submarine Hydrodynamics, control and guidance or Human Machine Interfaces for crew performance is safety-critical. However, simulations are

limited and always need validation on actual physical items dedicated to one specific submarine.

We propose to design an Australian Research & Experimental Submarine ARES (5-10m long) with the ability to reconfigure external shape and Fwd/aft control

planes configurations (cross or X-rudder) to simulate existing or future shapes.

The first phase (CY2020) will focus on systems design, feasibility demonstration and risk mitigation with Universities and Industries working in an Integrated

Product Data Environment, such as Dassault Systèmes 3DExperience, whilst TAFE-SA will ensure the design to production objectives are met.

Subsequent phases will deliver a detailed design and a production plan, then procure parts from SMEs and manufacture the Submarine. The Test and

Activation part in a lake/reservoir will conclude this phase before use for Research and Experiments, under the aegis of a commercial entity to ensure long-

term sustainment.

ASC – Our local Industry Expert and partner

• ASC exists to serve the frontline of Australia’s naval defence capabilities. With responsibility for sustaining the Collins Class Submarines, building the Hobart Class Air Warfare Destroyers and building the lead and second Arafura Class Offshore Patrol Vessels, ASC is an integral part of Australia’s sovereign naval industrial capability. ASC operates across three facilities in South Australia and Western Australia and employs more than 1,400 employees.

• Since 2006 with the University of Adelaide • ASC instructors are internationally recognised

subject matter experts with experience working on more than ten submarine classes from UK, France, Spain, Sweden and Australia.

Capabilities

Page 26: Shipbuilding Hub for Integrated Engineering and Local Design

The University of Adelaide’s Shipbuilding Hub for Integrated Engineering and Local Design collaborates with industry and Defence, to foster R&D initiatives in the maritime domain.

This includes identifying and implementing niche, high-value technical initiatives for:

• Defence projects, such as for Collins class or SEA1000 submarines, and SEA5000 Future Frigates

• allied industries, such as renewable marine energies.
