Happy New Year! October 1 st marks the beginning of the 2017-2018 4-H year. I’m looking forward to the New Year and working with all of our families to accomplish their objectives for this 4-H year. If your 4-H family is like mine we just finished record books this week. My 4-H’er needs a little break for record books but we will try and set our new goals in October, and start a permanent record sheet. The permanent record sheet does not go in record books anymore but it is a great information organizer! Starting Oct. 2 nd you can reenroll on 4-H online! This is how you get project information and communication from our office. So the sooner you reenroll the better. There is a $15 enrollment fee this year for 4-H’ers, not including Cloverbuds. You can pay this through 4-H online with a debit or credit card, or you can mail a check to the Kansas 4-H Office. Shawnee County 4-H is not collecting the enrollment fee. Lastly, we have a new family 4-H meeting on Oct. 25 th at 6:30pm at the Extension Office. Your new families are probably not getting Chatterbox so please help us spread the word! We are asking for RSVPs by Oct. 23 rd . This will be an hour-long information session about the entire 4-H year. Families who have attended in the past have said it was very helpful for them. New families can RSVP by e-mailing [email protected]. Looking forward to another great year of Shawnee County 4-H! ~Candis Achievement Night 2017 What: A Celebration of all of your 4-H Success from 2016-2017! Pick A Date and Join the Fun on December 21st or December 28th
Kansas Day is just around the corner and you know what that means
….. we need your help in making bread in a bag kits. We will be putting
together bread in a bag kits for School Enrichment and have two dates
in mind, Thursday, December 21st or December 28th at 1:00pm in the
upstairs meeting room. We are looking for about 12 volunteers. This is
a great opportunity to spend time with your fellow 4-H friends, and add
community service to your record book. So come and join the fun!
The School Enrichment program is an opportunity to reach school age
children that may not have had any other 4-H experience. This is not a
fundraiser for the Extension Office. The schools pay a nominal fee per student to cover the cost of
the supplies. The bread in a bag Wheat Science program is one of the most popular programs
offered to the elementary teachers in Shawnee County.
Please pick a date and we will go with the most popular date chosen, please call Kim Seeley at
232 -0062 x112 or email [email protected] by December 9th so we will know how many helpers to
count on.

The Marilyn & Jerry Dudley Scholarship encourages the Joy of
Sewing
Marilyn Dudley was an accomplished seamstress and shared
her passion for sewing with many 4-Hers through the years.
When Marilyn passed away in May, her family established the
Marilyn & Jerry Dudley Scholarship with the intent “to provide
opportunities to promote the interest and skills related to
clothing/sewing craft construction and style review.” These
opportunities will be available for Shawnee County 4-H youth.
As you select projects for the next 4-H year, now is a great
time to learn to sew or enhance your skills! The Topeka
Sewing Guild will be involved in helping host an educational
event and mentor young sewers. All youth who use a sewing
machine or serger to construct a garment or article, have it
judged for the Shawnee County Fair, and who model it in the
fashion review, will be eligible for a partial reimbursement of
the cost of fabric and notions.
Those enrolled in the Clothing and Textiles project will be notified of opportunities as they develop
throughout the year. Further guidelines and applications for reimbursement will be provided to those
participating in the project.
The Dudley family plans to support enhanced educational activities and awards identified in the
scholarship for the next five years. They hope to see enrollment in the Clothing and Textiles project
increase and to instill the love of sewing into many of our 4-Hers.

KAP Judging
Calling all volunteers to help judge Pottawatomie’s Competitive Record Books. They send about 40 books so
we will need helpers from all clubs. No youth will be allowed to judge, sorry.
I have reserved the downstairs meeting room on Oct. 12th and 13th for judging. It will be come and go but I do
need an RSVP on when you plan to come. That way I have an idea of how many people are helping and I will
know if I need to recruit more help. If you have never judged record books before you can still help. I will train
anyone one judging them.
I will also have the books at Events Council on the 12th if you would like to come early and judge before that
meeting. Please let me know by Oct. 6th who is judging, what club you are representing, and what areas you
are comfortable with.
If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail Candis at [email protected]. Thanks!!
