PAPAL INTENTIONS Each year, the Holy Father asks for our prayers for a specific intention each month. You are invited to answer the Holy Father's request and to join with many people worldwide in praying for this intention during the month of March:

Catholics in China We pray that the Church in China may persevere in

its faithfulness to the Gospel and grow in unity.

A SCRIPTURE REFLECTION FROM OUR PARISH LIFE DIRECTOR

The Genesis reading relates how an original intimacy between humans and God was damaged by distrust. The woman is tempted by the serpent to view their relationship with God as an unreasonable limitation. The serpent uses this mistrust to further distance them from God. All this is through half-truths.

In the second reading Paul teaches us how Adam’s disobedience brought judgement and death, not only for himself but for his descendants. Christ’s obedience reversed all of this. Through God’s gift we all have been saved and live in grace.

What does this mean to us now? I think sometimes we get lazy and think that God will forgive anything, so matter what. We turned to a tamed Christianity. Lent is a season to grow more holy, our time to go to the desert. This is our ascetic season. This is our opportunity to strip away the fat that weighs down our spiritual and moral life. Take some time as we begin Lent to look at your life and see where you might “tighten” up the belt. What can you do to make your life a little more Christ like?

FAITH SHARING QUESTIONS

We invite you to reflect upon the scripture readings you heard proclaimed at Mass this weekend by sharing with friends and family the “Question of the Week”. Gospel: Matthew 4:1-11 Adults: What helpful advice could you offer some one faced with a temptation ? Children: What helps you do the right thing when you want to do something wrong?

SHARING FAITH, CELEBRATING TRADITIONS, AND SERVING EACH OTHER TO THE PRAISE AND GLORY OF GOD.

FRIDAY’S OF LENT Abstaining from meat and other indulgences during Lent is a penitential practice. On the Fridays of Lent, we remember the sacrifice of Christ on Good Friday and unite ourselves with that sacrifice through abstinence and prayer.

Prayer before the Crucifix Friday’s of Lent at 6 pm to 9 pm at Holy Redeemer Church

HRSJ BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP Friday, March 6, 2020 7-8:30 PM

Dinah Martin Room at the HR Ministry Center March Selection “Where the Crawdads Sing”

by Delia Owens

April Selection: “The Alice Network” by Kate Quinn

May Selection: “Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress” by Dai Sijie

We have been to fortunate to obtain Book Kit copies of current bestseller (for over 60 weeks) “Where the Crawdads Sing.” The novel encompasses beautiful imagery of the marshy North Carolina coast where Kya Clark must fend for herself at the age of seven and as she matures is then suspected of murdering a well-known local man. If you’ve already read this mystery or want to hear more about it, come join in our discussion on Friday, March 6. Our Book Discussion Group now has the added perk of obtaining our book selections from the Glendale Public Library via Book Kits. Each attendee receives a loaned copy of the following month’s read (The Alice Network)—so now you don’t have to buy a book nor visit the library! We welcome all for Christian Fellowship and Fun!

Through the Eucharist we are….

Called to be Faithful

Please join the Knights of Columbus of Holy Redeemer/St James in supporting the 5th annual “40 Cans for Lent” food drive, February 29 – April 5, 2020. All food collected is in support of “Loaves & Fishes” and will be donated to the “Catholic Charities” food bank in Glendale.

Members of the Knights will be at the parishes before each weekend Mass to collect your food donation. If no Knights are present or you choose to drop off your donation on another day, please place in the normal “Loaves & Fishes” container inside the church.

The goal of this program is to ask each family to donate 40 cans over the 40 days of Lent. Specific food donations requested are easy open food cans, small fruit cans, or any other type of easy opening can to distribute to those in need. In addition to food donations, Catholic Charities is also requesting small hygiene items that can be easily distributed.

Should you have any questions, please contact Mike Williams of the Knights at 818-397-5738. Thank you in advance for your generosity in supporting those in need.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN

Visiting clergy members are VIRTUS® trained

A priest who is visiting the Archdiocese to minister for more than 15 days is required to complete a VIRTUS® Protecting God’s Children Adult Awareness Program, or present certification that states they have already completed a safe environment program. Archdiocesan officials will review alternative safe environment programs to ensure that they meet the standards held in our archdiocese for content and training protocols. These requirements are not just for priests — any bishop, deacon, religious brother or sister ministering in the archdiocese, must be cleared before beginning their ministry.

CENTERING PRAYER Contemplative prayer is God’s personal and unique gift to each of us. If we are open to this gift it will profoundly affect our lives and relationships, with God, others, and our world. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; rather it casts new light and depth of meaning on all types of prayer.

Join us on Monday evenings at Holy Redeemer (Parish Offices) at 7:15 pm.

THE DIVINE MERCY PRAYER GROUP The Divine Mercy Prayer Group meets on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 am at St. James Church to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet, the Divine Mercy prayers, and the Praises of the Divine Mercy. The mission of the prayer group is: Trust, Love and Mercy…..the essence of the Divine Mercy Devotion.
