Background ResearchArtistic Beats is a Portland based design studio recently relocated from Nashville, Tennessee.

Since its inception in 2008 under the guidance of Shanita King, the sole proprietor, this unique

and passionate design studio has been growing in experience and successful client outcomes.

With an architecture degree in hand, King spent years working with corporate design firms

where she amassed a wealth of technical design experience and knowledge. During that time she

designed and drafted residential and commercial property plans, prepared permits and models,

and created CAD as well as hand-drawn architectural renderings for client presentations. Though

highly successful, her dream was always to start her own business utilizing her artistic tendencies

while enabling others to develop their own creative ventures.

Today, Artistic Beats continues to offer services in landscape and architectural design, but has

grown to focus on art event curation, website layout, and fine art graphics. The studio’s overall

emphasis is on brand identification, advertising, social media, and logo design.

King believes that by promoting creativity, we make our communities better places. It should

come as no surprise that her client history is full of local non-profit organizations and small busi-

nesses aimed at bringing communities together via holistic products, sports, music, and/or art.

S.W.O.T Analysis

Strengths:

Design Binder- The Artistic Beats Design Binder holds all of the work produced for

clients, included in this binder are logos, print publications, and website designs. The

binder demonstrates to clients that Shanita King has the experience and skill to produce

quality work.

Creative Approach-Shanita King is a visual artist. She views website design and logo cre-

ation as an artistic process. This unique approach has allowed her passion for art to

drive her business endeavors.

Well Networked-Shanita King has worked in multiple states. Her background in archi-

tectural design, passion for yoga, and talent as a visual artist has given her access to

clients from diverse backgrounds.

Portland, Oregon Supports Art- “The City of Portland and Multnomah County both

have Percent-for-Art ordinances that require 2% of most publicly-funded capital con-

struction projects to be set aside for the creation and maintenance of public art. Over

the last 10 years, hundreds of artworks have been added to the region’s permanent col-

Weaknesses

Currently the Artistic Beats website is not visible to the public. The website does not

convey an emphasis in graphic design.

The logo and name do not accurately represent the company. The name Artistic Beats

was used by Shanita King when she planned an art event. During this event she hired a

DJ to play music while guests viewed and discussed the art on display. The name Artistic

Beats does not adequately convey its main focus is graphic design.

Artistic Beats can be rebranded and refocused as a graphic design business, capable of

working with clients from all backgrounds. King has worked with a number of clients in

the wellness community. As a result, Artistic Beats has functioned as a graphic design

business with an emphasis in wellness. Now, Artistic Beats has a unique opportunity to

expand it’s client base to include anyone who needs the services she provides.

Build relationships with the Portland, Oregon community. Artistic Beats can establish

it’s self as an asset to the Portland community by contributing to the already established

passion for the arts. Schools and youth can be further involved. Artistic Beats can part-

ner with local non-profit organizations and youth groups to contribute to the preserva-

tion of art in Portland.

Use existing businesses and websites as a template and model for the Artistic Beats

business reconstruction

Ms. King expressed that the website and mission statement from Amy Gayheart could be used as a model for how she could redesign her website. Visual Appeal- Amy Gayheart’s website is full of vibrant colors. Immediately the bright pinks and

Earthy greens convey creativity and spunk- Amy Gayheart’s picture in the center of the page instantly connects audiences to the

artist. - The website is well organized. The tabs are divided by the services she provides. - The web design is simple but appealing to the eye. It is not cluttered with information,

rather a client can click on the tab they would prefer to go to.

Name/ Brand Usage- On the home page the name Amy Gayheart is used six times. She uses her name when

referring to the website pages and has her email displayed at the top of the pages. - This is a great branding strategy because once a client goes to Amy Gayheart’s home

page they see her name numerous times causing them to remember her.- There is a section titled “Meet Amy.” It gives more information about the artist and pro-

vides insight as to why she is involved in art. It also provides a reason for her creative approach to the her business.

- It is suggested for Ms. King’s business name to change for branding purposes. This is so that her website viewers can instantly recognize her unique brand.

Threats

Shanita King is the sole proprietor of Artistic Beats and does not have the staff to com-

pete with larger graphic design businesses.

There are over 30 graphic design businesses listed in the Portland area. The overabun-

dance of competitors could decrease the amount of new clients for Artistic Beats
