Appropriately, it ends with these two portions which speak of the journeys of the Israelites through the Sinai. We read: “They set out from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month. It was on the morrow of the Passover offering that the Israelites started out defiantly, in plain view of all the Egyptians. The Egyptians meanwhile were burying those among them whom the LORD had struck down, every first-born—whereby the LORD executed judgment on their gods.” RaSHI comments that they were “working heavily in their mourning…” to bury their dead. I wonder – why does the Torah mention the mourning and loss of the Egyptians? Because the death of people is a death to those who loved them – and even though the freedom of the Jews was their right, it doesn’t require a closed heart to the losses it claims. RABBI’S SHABBAT MESSAGE

do not leave or enter the sanctuary.
