Pre-Employment Services

Career readiness trainingIndividuals with disabilities or disadvantages learn how to prepare for work. Training includes developing résumés and cover letters, developing interviewing skills, and filling out job applica-tions. Participants may receive assistance in ob-taining a driver’s license or food worker card. Ca-reer readiness services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, East Wenatchee, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.

Community-based assessment and trainingParticipants are placed at work sites out in the community. Goodwill staff help them learn their job duties, monitor their progress, and incorporate their evaluations into employment planning. Com-munity-based assessment and training services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.

Facility-based assessment and trainingParticipants are placed at Goodwill retail fa-cilities. On-site assessment and training helps Goodwill staff evaluate an individual’s readiness to work and ability to perform tasks in one or more specific jobs. Facility-based assessment and training services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Colville, East Wenatchee, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.Skills training (classroom)Varying by location, Goodwill offers classroom-based skills training programs to prepare partici-

pants for specific occupations:• Computer applications• Customer service• Retail professionalismSkills training (classroom) is available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Post Falls, and Coeur d’Alene.

“Soft skills” trainingParticipants learn how to set goals, develop a ré-sumé, prepare for job interviews, select appropri-ate work attire, and manage personal issues such as child care, transportation, and stress. “Soft skills” training is available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Mos-cow, and Lewiston.

Work adjustment/hardeningSometimes individuals with disabilities participate in work adjustment to prepare for entering the work-force. An example of work hardening would be a person with an injury performing tasks while staff monitor his or her ability and evaluate any limita-tions. Work adjustment/hardening services are avail-able in Spokane, Moses Lake, Colville, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.

Work experience/school transitionYoung people with disabilities may be able to participate in job experiences that will help them make the transition from school to work. Work experience/school transition services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Post Falls, Coeur d'Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.

Career and Resource CenterThe Career and Resource Center provides informa-tion, access to resources, and referrals to other com-munity resources. The Career and Resource Center serves as a WorkSource Spokane Connection site and is open to the public three days a week, of-fering customers access to all WorkSource online resources. Professional staff assistance is available to help customers navigate online research or job searches and give guidance and training at the Career and Resource Center. Staff will also assist customers with self-directed job searches, résumé preparation, and online job applications. In part-nership with the Spokane Area Workforce Devel-opment Council, WorkSource is an equal oppor-tunity partnership of organizations that provide employment and training services. Auxiliary aids and services are available upon request to persons with disabilities. Washington Relay Service 711. Services are available in Spokane.Group supported employmentUnder the guidance of a Goodwill job coach, indi-viduals with disabilities work together on various tasks. The job coach is able to analyze their tasks, train them on their duties, and provide retraining and other support as needed. Group supported em-ployment services are available in Moses Lake.

Individual supported employmentParticipants work at sites in the community, sup-ported by job coaches as needed. Supports may include help navigating the workplace, commu-nicating and problem solving with supervisors and coworkers, understanding paychecks, and developing a workflow. Individual supported employment services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponder-ay, Moscow, and Lewiston.

Job coaching and retention servicesOnce a program participant has obtained employ-ment, a Goodwill job coach may work side-by-side with him or her to learn and master job duties. Participants discover how to maintain employ-ment by learning to work well with others and

meet workplace expectations. Job coaching and retention services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Newport, East Wenatchee, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston. Job placement servicesStaff assist participants in identifying appropriate openings, preparing a résumé, practicing inter-view skills, and completing applications. Staff may contact prospective employers to find appro-priate job openings and, as needed, participate in the interviewing process. Sometimes staff assist with on-the-job training. Job placement services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Colville, Newport, East Wenatchee, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.

Job search assistanceGoodwill staff help participants explore different kinds of positions and locate job openings that are possible good matches. Participants learn to use various resources, which may include the Internet. Job search assistance is available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Newport, East Wenatchee, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.

Next Generation ZoneAs a partner in the Spokane Workforce Consor-tium, Goodwill participates in the Next Generation Zone, which serves at-risk youth ages 16 to 24. The Next Generation Zone provides employment train-ing, work experience, job placement, and other ser-vices. This program is funded under the Workforce Innovation Opportunity Act. In partnership with the Spokane Area Workforce Development Coun-cil, the Next Generation Zone is an equal oppor-tunity partnership of organizations that provide employment and training services. portation issues. Vocational counseling is avail-able in Spokane, Moses Lake, Post Falls, Coeur d’Alene, Ponderay, Moscow, and Lewiston.

Specialized Programs Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET)Goodwill is a Basic Food Employment and Training (BFET) provider. The Basic Food Employment and Training program provides training and education with a goal of assisting Basic Food (SNAP) clients to attain a living wage career. Basic Food Employment and Training is an important part of the state's com-prehensive workforce development system, serv-ing the needs of low-income individuals, displaced workers, and employers by encouraging financial independence from public assistance through skill acquisition, personal responsibility, and gainful employment. Services are available in Spokane.Credentials to Careers (C2C)Goodwill's Credential to Careers Program is de-signed to meet employer demand by growing the skills of our current and future workforce. Cre-dentials to Careers assists individuals entering or re-entering postsecondary educational facilities for job training. Participants complete the Credentials to Careers (C2C) class and receive individual support navigating their credentialing and career options. The Credentials to Careers class is designed to assist low-income adult learners with minimal exposure to the college experience. A variety of nonacademic, postsecondary training readiness topics, career map-ping, and life preparation activities are presented within a college classroom adapted atmosphere. The goal is for participants to complete training for a high demand occupation, earning an industry-recognized certificate or credential that will lead to a family-sup-porting job. Services are available in Spokane.

Housing and Essential Needs (HEN) The Housing and Essential Needs program provides housing assistance and essential housing needs to individuals who have been referred to the program

by the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS). Individuals who apply to DSHS for assis-tance due to a short-term disability may be eligible for the Housing and Essential Needs program. Eligible persons who are homeless or, in some cases, at risk of becoming homeless may receive housing assistance in the form of rental subsidies, housing deposits, and application fees, as well as assistance with utility payments if program staff determine such assistance is needed. Eligible individuals may also receive essential household needs such as clean-ing supplies, hygiene products, and other household items and transportation assistance in the form of bus passes or gasoline vouchers. The Housing and Essential Needs program is funded by the Washing-ton State Department of Commerce through a grant by the City of Spokane. Services are available in Spokane and Spokane Valley.

Independent Living ServicesGoodwill provides services to individuals with disabilities, helping them gain independence. Indi-viduals receiving Independent Living Services are referred by and funded by Washington’s Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. Goodwill staff assess their needs, such as mastering household tasks, taking care of basic expenses, and using public transporta-tion, then develop a personalized plan to guide their growth to independent living. Staff evaluate their liv-ing situation and assure that it is safe and accessible or may facilitate the individual moving to another home. Independent Living Services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, Colville, East Wenatchee, Pull-man, Clarkston, Moscow, and Lewiston.Re-Entry InitiativeMany people are released from jail with no job, no home, and no support system. Without these sup-

ports, they are at higher risk for behaviors that will return them to prison. The Goodwill Re-Entry Initia-tive provides services that help adults successfully transition from prison to a productive life in commu-nity. Goodwill uses housing and employment as the foundation to help men and women break the cycle of incarceration and become part of their communi-ty. To qualify for the Re-Entry Initiative, you must be at Spokane County Jail or Geiger Corrections Center. To qualify, applicants must have little or no income, at least 45 days left on one’s sentence, and all charges adjudicated upon release. Visit spokanecountyhprp.com to apply. Services available in Spokane County.Representative Payee Services Individuals who are receiving government as-sistance, such as Social Security or Temporary As-sistance to Needy Families, may also receive help from Goodwill in managing their monthly finances. Goodwill is authorized by federal and state agencies

to receive the checks and, in turn, make payments to landlords, utilities, etc. Some participants are private parties. The payee staff is skilled at developing bud-gets and negotiating payment schedules. Represen-tative Payee Services are available in Spokane, Moses Lake, East Wenatchee, Coeur d’Alene, and Lewiston.

Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF)Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) is a rapid rehousing program for eligible veterans struggling to obtain and sustain permanent hous-ing. SSVF helps veterans and veteran families find and secure stable housing and equips participants for financial stability. Veterans work with their case managers to create a housing stability plan with supported goals that ensure success and indepen-dence within their communities. SSVF services are available in Spokane, Stevens, Pend Oreille, Koote-nai, Ferry, Lincoln, Whitman, and Bonner counties.
