Come to him, a living stone … chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture:

See, I am laying in Zion a stone,A cornerstone chosen and precious,And whoever believes in him will not be put to shame. 1 Peter 2:4-6

The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ our Lord … and on that foundation, God places living stones to build Christ’s church. The people of Nativity are the living stones God calls to be built into the Body of Christ. Here at Nativity, over the last five years God has laid one precious stone on top of another – you and I, God’s holy people, living out our faith in Jesus Christ. Now we are coming to a new phase in God’s call to us. As we have grown from meeting in living rooms, to meeting in a school, to meeting in a suite in an office building, God has continued to send new living stones, chosen and precious – new people to be part of this beautiful new church. We now have nearly 200 people in worship many Sundays, and we are outgrowing our classrooms, our offices, our hospitality space, and our sanctuary. These are good problems to have! They speak to the solid foundation of ministry in Jesus’ name that Nativity has made the cornerstone of our church. As many of you know, we have entered into a purchase agreement to buy an incomplete building just south of the southeast corner of Williams and Miller in Scottsdale. The building was intended to be a 2-story, 24,500 square-foot office building, but we will completely redesign it to look like a church. Our plans call for Phase I of our building program to finish the ground floor of the building, leaving the upper floor for expansion down the road, as God puts more living stones in place in our church community. I can’t wait to share the plans with you! The church we are designing will be beautiful and functional, and it will serve as the home for many vital Nativity ministries, from our beautiful worship to our lively children’s and youth programs to our life-changing outreach ministries. Please make plans to attend our Living Stones Banquet on Saturday, Oct. 22! We will share a dinner together (sponsored by one of our members), enjoy some art and some entertainment provided by our members, and most of all, unveil the plans for our new church. Come one and all, to the signature event on Nativity’s calendar this fall!

And now, I would like to ask for your prayers. There are several things that need to happen for this dream to come true for us. Please pray for these things:

• For Scottsdale to approve our architectural plans at its D e s i g n Review Board hearing on Thursday, Sept. 15;

• For all legal structures to be in place to make it possible for us to finalize the purchase in October;

• For all the financial resources we need to make this dream a reality to become available.

Our financial resources are in very promising shape: I am delighted to let you know that we now have leadership gift commitments of approximately $1.5 million, from a group of committed leaders in our parish. We are confident that God will call forth the additional resources that are needed to accomplish this project. Please think and pray about what God might be calling you to contribute, as well. And plan to attend our Living Stones Banquet on October 22, to learn more about this dream! You too are a Living Stone, chosen and precious in God’s sight. And on the rock of your faith, Christ will build his church.

Pa g e 4 A NOTE FROM OUR MUSIC DIRECTORWe have just started the new school year and our music groups are already expanding! I am so happy to see that! Our well-established Adult Choir members are: Lynda Orescanin, Claire Smith, Donna Hartz, Jasmine Youssefi, Joyce Ditzler, Jill Sweifach, Christine White, Mark Dobbins, Steven Fischer, Lewis Smith, Steven Smith, Jeff Jameson. And from time to time our dear pastor Susan Snook joins us too! We have new Adult Choir members and we welcome them warmly: Mary Dexter and Mark Miller, who have a great experience participating in choirs and are an extraordinary addition to our group. Caroline Link has just joined our Gospel Choir. Our Children Choir members are: Erin and Charlotte Erickson, Alec and Jaclyn Fishbach, and since this year Cami Walukiewicz, Keaton and Carter Ross! They all share the love of music and have a wonderful time playing and singing together. This September the music ministry is offering a variety of events in which you can participate. Every week there is a showcase of our ministry activity and something extraordinary in one of the services. On September 4, you will hear our Youth Ensemble Fall 2011, which will consist of kids singing and playing their instruments during the offertory music. On September 11, our guest violinist, Dagmara Sucho!, is coming back to perform high quality music by the Polish female composer Gra"yna Bacewicz. On the same day our Family Inspirations Choir will have its first rehearsal after the second service. On

September 18 our Gospel Choir is going to showcase some of the most exciting music from the genre, and immediately after the service there will be a Youth Ensemble practice. Our guest flautist Monica Sauer Anthony and I will present music by Robert Schumann at the early service on September 25, and the second service will take place at the park, when we bless our animals. On Friday September 23, I will present a paper about the life of Polish composer Gra"yna Bacewicz at the International Feminist Conference at ASU; I will also perform her composition on the organ with Dagmara Sucho! on the violin (http://ftm11.events.asu.edu). My presentation will take place in the Organ Hall at the ASU Music Building, Tempe Campus, on Friday at noon. Come join us!

BISHOP OF NAVAJOLANDBishop of Navajoland Visits Nativity-On Wednesday, August 24th, Bishop David Bailey of the Episcopal Diocese of Navajoland came to Nativity to bless our quilt, Navajo Sky. He also talked about the Episcopal Church’s presence in Navajoland and the social challenges the Navajo people face on a daily basis. The Bishop shared his goals of raising up Navajo people to become priests and leaders in their churches and restoring the church buildings throughout the Reservation that have suffered years of neglect. His most important goal is to create programs to address the needs of a people that have suffered great hardships, which are passed down through generations in the form of drug, alcohol, physical and emotional abuse. The Reservation struggles with alarming rates of unemployment, teen pregnancies and a shocking number of teen suicides, he gave the example of one church that had 17 in three months. Bishop Dave, as he asked to be called, is bringing in a program called White Bison, based on the twelve steps of AA, but written by a Dakota native strictly for Native Americans and their specific struggles. One of the nicest things for our group to hear was that the work and donations Nativity members are making to St. Mary’s in Monument Valley is definitely making a difference. He is so grateful to have our help and truly appreciates the generosity of our congregation. Our time together ended with the blessing of the quilt in the Navajo tradition of the laying on of hands. We each took hold of the quilt or touched someone who held the quilt as he blessed Navajo Sky and our congregation’s work to help the people of Navajoland.

Upcoming Events & Opportunities Page 5

LIVING STONE BANQUETPlease mark your calendars for Saturday, October 22 – the night of our big kick-off event for our new building! We will unveil the design and explain the vision. Delicious food great entertainment, children’s programs and terrific company make for a great evening! And the event will include an Art Silent Auction, so if you are an artist, crafter or builder, we would love to include your work! Please contact Claire Smith for more information at [email protected].

Bishop Kirk Smith is visiting Nativity on November 13, 2011, which means we have an opportunity to make or renew our commitment to Christ and The Episcopal Church through the Rite of Confirmation. Confirmation is open to teens and adults who have been baptized and are willing to take the next step of faith. There are three ways you can participate:

• Confirmation, for those who have been baptized as a child and now want to make the promises of baptism for themselves;

• Reception, for those who have been previously confirmed in a Roman Catholic, ELCA Lutheran, or Eastern Orthodox tradition, but would now like to affirm their commitment to The Episcopal Church.

• Reaffirmation, for those who have been previously confirmed or received in The Episcopal Church, but who are ready to make a renewed commitment to Christ.

Confirmation classes are forming now. In the classes, we discuss our commitments as

Christians, our background as Anglicans and Episcopalians, and the vows that we are making in Confirmation, Reception or Reaffirmation.

For adults, the classes involve two meetings with the full group (one of which is a one-day retreat at a location in the Phoenix area), and a book study and series of discussion meetings with a mentor from the church. If you are interested in learning more about adult confirmation, please contact Pastor Susan at 480.307.9216 or [email protected].

For teens, the classes include two one-day retreats at the church, plus participation in youth group and Sunday School. If you are interested in teen confirmation, please contact Pastor Susan or Klayton Chew at 480.250.2954 or [email protected].

Please note, we are encouraging teens who were confirmed last spring at the cathedral to participate in Reaffirmation this November, so that your families and church families can celebrate with you.

HELPING HANDS for NAVAJOLAND FALL MISSION TRIP

We are heading to Monument Valley this October 27th-30th for a working mission, which also includes a shared

Saturday night service and serving a celebratory dinner for our Navajo family. This trip should include work projects to help local families, improvements to the trailer on the church property and hopefully enlarge the front porch on

the parish hall. Prepare to be sore, tired and dusty, but truly rewarded. Space is limited due to lodging

availability and we will fill spots on a first come, first sign up basis. If you are interested in participating, please

Life Changing Change - Nativity Drive Makes a Difference!!!Even though we haven’t said much recently, our Life Changing Change efforts to help provide much needed food for our neighbors goes on.

Since we started this spring over $300 has been raised and donated to St. Mary’s Food Bank. This means the Food Bank could distribute over 2000 meals in our community. It’s clear that just little change and make a BIG change in the lives of others. I like to relate this to the miracle of the loaves and fishes – very little to start but great amounts given.

Just to remind you, Life Changing Change is designed to make it very easy for everyone to participate. All you have to do is take the spare change you already toss in a jar, mug, bowl, piggy bank or whatever and bring it to church so we can pass it on to St. Mary's Food Bank. This couldn’t be easier and it’s something the whole family can get involved in. And, if you’re interested in getting an “official” St. Mary’s Food Bank bank, they’re still available.

Hunger remains a major problem in our state with over 1 million people experiencing food insecurity. St. Mary's is the oldest and one of the largest food banks in the country and address the issue of hunger throughout Arizona every day.

We pray you’ll join our efforts to help out our neighbors in need. For more information, contact Jeff Jameson at 480-262-7957 or [email protected].

NATIVITY WOMEN’S GROUP SAVE-THE-DATE!

It is Fall and time for the ladies of Nativity to gather for the first Women’s Group Meeting and luncheon of the season. Plan to gather Thursday, September 8th, at 10:30 am at Nativity for a short meeting followed by lunch at a nearby restaurant. If you have questions, please phone Annie Blum at 480.502.2005.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY CONTINUES

All are welcome to join us for our exploration of the Gospel of Matthew, held each Wednesday evening at Nativity from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. Pastor Susan and Dr. Wayne Whitney lead this in-depth exploration of the Bible, issues of faith, and God in daily life. All kinds of questions come up, and no question is too small or too large! Children are welcome to come and participate in children’s choir practice and music lessons, led by our Music Director, Ilona Kubiaczyk-Adler.

A note from the Director of Family Ministries

Welcome Back to Sunday School! Our first Fall month of Sunday School Classes has been exciting as we continue to learn and grow! As the new Director of Children and Family Ministries, I have been blessed

to serve our community and get to know our wonderful

teachers and families. As students, teachers, and

members of the Nativity Family, we have begun the Fall

season with a warm and welcoming energy, and it is

only the beginning of a great year! Please read on for the

wonderful events which will be taking place in our Church.

Blessings,Sarah

Thank You Nativity Members for your generous contributions to the 2011

Back to School Backpack Drive!

Vicar Susan B. Snook and Nativity Children at the Blessing of the Backpacks.

Once again, The Nativity Church family gathered an amazing

collection of Back to School Supplies! The continual

outpouring of generosity from this burgeoning Mission

church is incredible. Time and time again, Nativity members

step up to help people in need. Items collected this year,

were donated to the Paradise Valley School District’s needy

families. Thank you, all of you, for your donations, time and

prayers.

THE NATIVITY SCENE JR! ! ! ! ! ! ! for children and their families

Children’s Outreach Ministries

The Nativity Family dedicates so much love to the Ministry of Outreach, with so many facets to which we can all contribute! How can we get our children involved in the awareness and practice of serving others? Nativity’s Leeann Philipsen has addressed this question, offering her own service to the mission of developing Nativity’s first-ever Children’s Outreach Program!

The children made crafts, drew pictures, and decorated posters about this cause, preparing to announce the detail of their mission during the first Youth Sunday of the Fall (9/4). Children of ages 4-3rd grade crafted prayer cards and donation tags for the dogs, for the display of their Bulletin Board, outside the Godly Play Classroom. We hope that you will take some time to admire their artwork and let it speak on the needs of the mission! Upper Elementary students created a poster in class, which they will share on Youth Sunday. We are so pleased to hear from them and for their excitement!

Donations for this cause will be collected throughout the month, leading up to their offering on September 25th, at the 11:00 a.m. Blessing of the Animals Service in the Park. We thank Leeann for coordinating efforts with AZGC to help this mission in need.

For more information on AZGRC, please visit our information table outside of the Godly Play Classroom, or visit http://www.azgc.org

Please contact Sarah Montheard for more information on Children and Family Ministries at 631-662-4040 or [email protected]

Children’s Outreach aims to incorporate our Children and

Families to our missions of service within Nativity. The last

Sunday School class in the month of August was dedicated to

teaching the children how their involvement would directly

help the Arizona Golden Retriever Connection (AZGC), an all-

volunteer charitable organization which rescues and finds

permanent homes for Golden Retrievers in Arizona.

AZGC will be attending our 11:00 a.m. Animal Blessing on

September 25th, with some furry friends for us to meet and

learn more about!

PACKAGES FROM HOMEWe are excited to have a few different ways for you to help support our troops overseas this year.

LETTER WRITING CAMPAIGNWe will hold a letter writing session on Sept. 18th, 25th and Oct. 2nd. Tables will be set up in the lobby with pens and paper for you to sit down and write quick notes of thanks for our soldiers. Or you can write letters of support at home and bring them to the church, they especially love the ones written by kids. If you include your name and address you can become pen pals. We will pack the letters in our boxes of donated items that will be shipped to Afghanistan.

READ TO YOUR KIDSOne of the most popular programs carried out by the chaplains in the Middle East is called “Read to Your Kids"– to keep those serving so far from home in touch with the small children they have left behind. So how does this program work? Well, a video is made of the GI reading a children’s story to his/her child. Then the video, and sometimes the book, is sent home to the child. This allows the absent parent to “read” a story to his/her child any time the child wants to hear the story – and the videos often get worn out and have to be replaced! Can you imagine the joy felt by the child? Can you imagine the pleasure of the absent parent returning home from war to a child who instantly recognizes them? If you’d like to help, we need donations of mini-DVDs and books appropriate for children ages 1-5.

SOCKS AND WHAT ELSE? They say an army travels on its stomach, but in Afghanistan our troops are finding that a lack of socks makes traveling difficult. In fact, they don’t have much of anything in the way of hygiene products (anyone have an old Sears Catalog we could send for toilet paper?). Here’s a short list of much-needed items:! !Warm White or Black socks (tube type/calf length)! Eye drops Fleece or Thermal blankets ! Toilet Paper! ! Chapstick Lotion (unscented is best)! ! Baby Wipes! ! SunscreenHand and Foot warmers (sports department at Walmart)

While it’s still hot in Afghanistan, when you think of their weather, think “Montana.” Much of the country is mountainous, and in some parts of the country, the lowest mountain passes are higher than our highest mountain passes. The winters can be brutally cold and we want to get warm, winter gear to our troops

!!! ! BEFORE they need it.

KNITTING & CROCHETING With winter coming, the soldiers are in desperate need for helmet liners. Anyone who enjoys knitting, please see Barbara or Bill Worthington for the instruction sheet.

USED PAPERBACK BOOKSThere is down time on the bases and our soldiers need some entertainment. Please donate any used paperbacks, CDs and DVDs. Please bring any and all items to the church from September 18th through October 2nd. Thanks for your support.
