Getting it together. Starting strong. Turningover a new leaf. The beginning of the semesterelicits many clichs about fresh outlooks. Its a great time to look at the model chapterguidelines on the website under chaptermaterials--http://www.nbs-aerho.org/documents/ModelChapterProgram-2009.pdf.Youll see that the sort of activities that get

points are really great guidelines for chapteractivities and programming. Get inspiredto plan a multi-chapter activity, help a newchapter reactivate, and/or get those dues in ontime.

Model chapter is a goal you and your chaptershould be striving for. Its not something youcan do overnight, but it is something that ispossible with good planning by your chaptersleadership. If youre looking for ideas for ways

to build up point totals, be sure and contact

the people who know. Start with your regionalleadership, check with members of chapterswho were designated model chapters last year(check the website). Dont forget your nationalofcers.Actually, theresanationalofcerforChapter Development, Dr. Joe Chuk, [email protected],whocanassistyoudirectly, and

point you in the right direction. The supportresources are in place.

Thecommitmenttoexcellencehasgottobe more than an abstract goal. You havethe opportunity to distinguish yourself, andyour chapter by joining an elite group, thosewho earn model chapter. Take the time tofamiliarizeyourselfwiththeguidelines,andthengetgoing.Evenifitsan18montheffort,

    Professionalnetworkinghasreachedawholenewlevelofcommunicationintherstdecadeof the 21st century.

With the outbreak of social networkingsites such as Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, and LinkedIn, as well as many others, collegeand students are able to communicate withmembers of the professional world muchmore easily.

The availability of means of contactingprofessionals easily and swiftly allowsstudents hoping to venture into the businessworld fresh opportunities to gain invaluableexperienceand, intheprocess, learnnewinsights into the realities of professional life. This also allows business professionals toreach out to such aspirants, creating a trulymutuallybenecialexperience.

However, this also means students need tobe aware of one stipulation. The need to bereasonably prudent about what information topost on their public sites. The Internet makesitquickandeasytolookforandndnearlyanyone on social networking sites. As such,

business professionals are just as easily ableto browse through photos and posts made bypotential employers, which necessitates theneed to censor ones public information.

Thebenetsofbrowsingandinhabitingsocial networking sites are obvious, indeed. Ifused appropriately, business professionals-to-

be will have earned an edge as they step intothe real world of business.

It is the start of a new school year and like anynew year we tend to set goals and resolutionsfor what is to come.

It is not enough to just be a member of theNational Broadcasting Society. NBS has hundredsof members from all around the states. In orderto be successful it is imperative to stand out. Thismay seem impossible while competing in themist of hundreds of other broadcasting students, but NBS actually makes it easy. It is importantto remember that there is more to the NationalBroadcasting Society than solely the Regional

Conventions and National Competitions. This is anorganizationdesignedtoaidthestudentmembersin achieving their goals. What better way to dothis than holding a leadership role in a nationalorganization.ThisisexactlywhattheStudentAdvisoryCouncil, commonly known as the SAC, aims toaccomplish. NBS members have the opportunityto hold leadership positions within the SAC.Members of the SAC work with students fromthe entire country, not just their state, or theiruniversity. This enables individuals to obtain abetter understanding of what is going on in thebroadcasting world, and opens their eyes to whatis going on outside the walls of their comfortzones.Thesemembersalsohavesayinplanningthe National Convention, which this year willbe in Dallas. This ensures that the NationalBroadcasting Society is catering to the students, whichiscrucialtotheorganization.

Right now NBS is currently looking for

representatives for the SAC from regions 3 and 6.If anyone is interested they can e-mail me, GinaGrosso at [email protected]. The application tohold this position can be found at http://www.nbs-aerho.org/student-recognition.shtml.

Now that the Fall semester is underway,I think its time for everyone to getfocused on making this year the verybest it can be for their NBS Chapter.I think there are many ways to startworking towards this goal. One of themost important steps in this process iscommunication. I am calling on eachof you to communicate your thoughts,

ideas, needs, dreams and goals with youchapter, your advisors and your regionalandnationalofcers.

You might be asking yourself how canI do this? Well, its never been easierthen it is now. Last month I created aFacebook group of NBS/AeRho calledTheOfcialNationalBroadcastingSociety Facebook Group. We nowhave over 600 groups members rangingfrom students, faculty, alumni, chapteradvisorsandallofthenationalofcers.I know that many of you spend manyhours every week communicating withyour friends and family on Facebook. Sonow I simply ask you to give NBS a smallpart of that time. If you have ideas, needsor chapter postings youd like to sharewithourorganizationpostyoucanpostthem in our Facebook group. Then ourentire NBS community can share their

feedback and ideas with you.Lets make this year great and lets not

    forget to communicate!

EverydayoverthesummerafterIcamehome from my job at the Dairy Queen Ihopped online to check my e-mail. Usuallyit was nothing more than chain mail, orstore coupons. However this one specialnight I received an e-mail from Gina Grossoasking me to step up this semester as thenew Student Representative of the NationalAdvisory Council. This all came as a surprise

to me since Im now entering my senior yearatKutztownUniversity, butIknewthiswasntan opportunity I could pass up. Being thenewest addition to the national board was abitscaryatrst, butnowImjustplainexcitedto help out and be a student voice.

This is where you the NBS members comein. I want to do everything I can this year, andthat means helping every chapter possible.MychapteratKutztownUniversityhasbeena Model Chapter for years at the National

Conventions, and I would love to see otherchapters reach this honor as well. My planin making this happen is to make myself

available for any questions and any help thatold, new, and returning chapters might have. Now that all the members have heard myname, I know I have the capabilities to help. Iunderstand that Gina is going to be very busythis year, which is why I want to make my selfmore available.

With this mentality in mind I can helpdifferent schools in their own chapters, whileat the same time take suggestions to transferto the national level. With this one year I wantto be able to say I made a difference in NBS,and hopefully inspire more members to stepup as well. In saying this I hope Ive inspiredsome members to come talk to me, and topossibly get involved. I love NBS more thananything about my three years at college so

far, andifIcouldhelpotherstondthelovethat I did I would make all the hard workworth it. So take this opportunity to send mean e-mail or request me on Facebook to shareideas and ask questions, because four years isway to short to not take chances.
