GOSPEL MEDITATION

September 23, 2018 25th Sunday in Ordinary

Time

The Oscars. The Super Bowl. TV talent shows.

Your son's Little League championship. We live

in a culture set on competition. The desire to "be

the best" goes beyond hobbies and into politics,

the corporate world, and parenting comparisons

at the park. This desire is as old as the human

race, and it surely arose in Jesus' day. While

Biblical society was significantly less open and

upwardly mobile than our own, power was

attractive. From what we know, many of Jesus'

disciples had come from lowly backgrounds. Now

they followed an increasingly popular rabbi who

seemed primed to do something big.

Jesus does his best to dissuade their high hopes

by prophesying his own defeat. "The Son of Man

is to be handed over ? and they will kill him."

Internalizing the message proves challenging for

the disciples, and their attention remains fixed on

earthly glory. "They ? [discuss] among

themselves on the way who was the greatest."

True to style, Jesus flips their pretensions on their

heads. "'If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be

the last of all and the servant of all.'"

We have heard these Biblical principles before.

Do we believe them? In our professional lives, do

we do whatever we can to get ahead, or are we

concerned with the entire team succeeding? In

the lives of our children, are we more concerned

with victory or with building character? Jesus

doesn't condemn success, but he reframes it.

"'Whoever receives one child such as this in my

name, receives me.'" Today's Gospel is a reality

check. In God's eyes,

our success will not be

measured by worldly

output alone but by

how much love and

service we offer to oth-

ers in the process.

At Home with the Lord

Remember Lord and welcome into your Kingdom

those who have died and gone before us marked

in the sign of faith, especially

Stella Rauch

Robert Reiner

Please pray for the

consolation of their loved ones.

Women and Men Sharing Faith and Hope

Our next meeting is Monday, Septem-

ber 24th at 7:00 p.m. We are at MOST

HOLY NAME again this week. Please

read Chapter 2 of “Tattoos on the Heart”

by Gregory Boyle.

Be the Last of All and the Servant

of All – Jesus offers this command

connected with the announcement of

his passion and death to his disci-

ples. They didn’t understand what

Jesus meant when he said that he would suffer

and die, and instead argued about who was the

greatest among them. Yet, the Lord continues to

work to prepare their hearts so that they might be

ready for the suffering of the cross, and ultimately

the glory of the resurrection. By putting others

first and being the servant of all we are called to

sacrifice, to be compassionate, literally to suffer

with, and to open ourselves to others who will

seek to do the same for us. All of this is rooted in

the call to love others as if THEY are Christ and

to love others as if WE are Christ. The On Mis-

sion for The Church Alive! initiative as a whole,

and the implementation of the Interim Mass

Schedule on October 15

th

, in particular, are op-

portunities for us to welcome and serve others

with whom we are united in faith, hope and love.

It may take sacrifice and a change of routine, but

it can also bring about an increase of the love of

Christ at work in us.

Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to stay informed.

Missionary Cooperative Weekend

The Trinitarians

Fr. Kurt Klismet, O.SS.T. will be

visiting he community of Most Holy

Name of Jesus, St. Aloysius and

St. Anthony the weekend of

September 29th & 30th, to share

information about the ministry of

the Order of the Most Holy Trinity

a n d o f t h e C a p t i v e s

(The Trinitarians) and to ask for your prayers and

financial support for the Trinitarian missions in

India.

The Order was founded in the year 1198 by St.

John de Matha and St. Felix of Valois to ransom

Christian captives and to perform works of mercy.

Today, Trinitarian priests and brothers serve in

places around the world where Christians are

persecuted for their faith in Christ.

Fr. Kurt was born in Wisconsin, has been a Trini-

tarian since 1996, and was ordained a priest in

2002. He currently serves as Treasurer for the

Order in the United States. His ministry includes

assisting the mission in India with planning and

development in an environment which is rapidly

changing, but in which many are left behind. Fr.

Kurt is happy to visit and to share with you stories

of Christ’s healing and liberating presence in a

troubled world.

Every gift is greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your prayers and support!

Eucharistic Adoration & Veneration of

the Relic of St. Therese of Lisieux

at St. Anthony's Chapel

On Sunday, October 7th at 3:00

pm, we will begin to pray the

Church's evening prayer before

Christ in the Eucharist. The

Blessed Sacrament will be ex-

posed in the monstrance at the

beginning of evening prayer and

the service will conclude with

Benediction, Christ imparting His blessing to us in

His Eucharistic Presence. Following the service,

the faithful who wish to do so will have the oppor-

tunity to venerate a relic of one of the saints. For

October, it will be the relic of St. Therese of

Lisieux, whose feast day is on October 1st.

Women's Guild would like to thank everyone who

helped with and/or purchased hoagies last week.

We sold 115 hoagies and were very grateful for

the support that you gave us.

St. Vincent de Paul

St. Vincent de Paul is much more than a patron

saint of thrift shops! Young Vincent became a

priest hoping to advance and rise above his

modest upbringing. His early ambition

amounted to little when he was assigned to a

poor rural parish. Here he experienced a new

joy in his vocation. Hearing the profound

deathbed confession of a dying servant,

Vincent became more

convinced of the

special attention that

must be given to the

poor. In 1625, Vincent

founded the

Congregation of the

Mission for the

purpose of caring for

the poor. Originally

priests only, the

mission expanded to

include groups of laity

who provided for

spiritual and material

needs of the poor in

each parish. Nearly 400

hundred years later,

his legacy lives on!

A Family Perspective By Bud Ozar - Disagreements

are common in families. But what would you say if Je-

sus posed the same question “What are you arguing

about?” Is it silly and petty? Is it an attempt to impose

your will and control on another. Today Jesus tells us

and his disciples to give it up. We are meant to serve

each other, not control.

St. Vincent de Paul Society - In today’s Gospel Je-

sus called the Twelve, and said to them, “If anyone

wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and

the servant of all.” Taking a child, he placed it in their

midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them,

“Whoever receives one child such as this in my

name, receives me; and whoever receives me, re-

ceives not me but the One who sent me.” Your gift to

the Society of St. Vincent de Paul will help hungry

children feel the arms of Jesus around them.
