The Holywood Players drama group presents a ‘Christie’ style murder

mystery, ‘A Party To Murder’ written by Marcia Cash and Douglas E

Hughes. Although Agatha Christie was not directly responsible for ‘A

Party to Murder’, her shadow looms large over this play. The twisting,

turning, shocking plot is truly worthy of the mistress of murder. It

is Halloween and six people have been invited to a Murder Mystery

Party weekend at a rustic island cottage. Everything seems set for

a weekend of fun until ghosts from the past begin to haunt the pro-

they taste, confer and re-taste

before making the decision on

whether a product should be a

Great Taste 1, 2 or 3 star winner.

Judged by over 400 of the most

demanding palates belonging to

food critics, chefs, cooks, mem-

bers of the Women’s Institute,

writers and journalists, Great

Taste is widely acknowledged as

the most respected food accredi-

Children and young people are being encouraged to use their

creativity and take part in this year’s anti-bullying art and creative

writing competition, one of the many exciting initiatives taking

place in the lead up to Anti-Bullying Week 2014 (17-21 November

2014). This year’s theme is ‘Together we will make a difference

– END BULLYING NOW!’ and will explore our collective role in

tackling bullying in our schools and in our communities. There are

two categories in the competition; art and creative writing. Art will

include posters, drawings, paintings, sculptures or photographs,

while creative writing will include poetry, short stories, diaries, songs

and drama scripts up to 500 words in length. All entries will be

judged in three groups, based on age on 30 September 2014: Junior

(under 9 years old), Intermediate (9 - 13 years old) and Senior (14-

18 years old). Entries must be submitted through a school, youth

group or other organisation that has registered for Anti-Bullying Week

2014. Deadline for entries is Tuesday 30 September 2014. Schools,

youth groups and any organisation working with young people

can register for Anti-Bullying Week through the NIABF website

endbullying.org.uk. Or Jenny Reid, Project Assistant, on 028 9089

A NewDimensionHolywood based author William Long began writing a series of

sci-fi fantasy adventure stories aimed and young adults and

older kids. The next edition is published soon so we caught up

with William for a chat about how it all began.

William grew up in East Belfast during and after the Second

World War when there was little in the way of home enter-

tainment for a little boy. Both his parents were profoundly deaf, so

there was no radio at that stage of his childhood, and long before

the advent of TV and computers. ‘I was always reading a book

of some description: Rupert the Bear and Just William are two

favourites that come to mind. American comics from an aunt in

Canada arrived almost every month, feeding my imagination with

the deeds of Batman, Captain Marvel and Superman, as well as

the antics of Tom and Jerry. As I grew older, I would spend time

with my mother helping her to read the daily and weekend papers,

which helped her to adjust to a silent world.’ He left school at 14

to start work and earn some money, but continued his education

with the aid of libraries and books.

‘I always had the feeling I had a story to tell, but it wasn’t until I

was in my 60s when I was diagnosed with prostate cancer that I

made any attempt to take writing seriously. During the eighteen

months of clinical tests, scans and, finally, surgery, I kept notes

on the whole process and turned it into a short story. One of the

hospital staff chanced to read it and suggested that others would

also like to read it. So along with a selection of fictional Irish short

stories, it was published as An Unexpected Diagnosis – which is

still available as an eBook on Amazon. Since then, I now treat

every day as bonus, and it was the spur to writing a novel.’

William has always been interested in the cosmos, space explora-

tion and the possibility of life on other worlds. Around ten years

ago he listened to a broadcast by the Japanese physicist, Dr Michio

Kaku, an early proponent of string theory, when he spoke of the

multiverse, the idea there might be multiple universes. ‘‘What

if we could travel from one

dimension to the next? What

would we find? And so, I think,

the idea for Timecrack was

triggered. It was when one

of my readers asked me what

happened to Malcolm and Lucy,

the boys’ parents, that I thought

seriously about continuing the

story. This eventually led to the

writing of Copanatec the next

book in the Timecrack series,

which I expect to be published

before Christmas. A third book

is in the pipeline, hopefully for

publication next year.’

COMMUNITY SPIRITTimebank is fantastic way of exchanging skills and for people to come

together and help others and help themselves at the same time.

Redburn Loughview started its Timebank initiative in March 2012. and

since then there have been 1,253 plus exchanges totalling 297,200

hours on the two Co Down estates! We spoke to Louise Green the

Project Worker for Redburn Loughview Community Forum to get an

insight into how it all works.

TIME TO

SHARE

‘Timebank encourages neighbour-

liness and enables often unrec-

ognised support provided within

a community to be recorded as

assets and celebrated. As a result

people in 40 nations across six

continents are depositing their

time and swapping their skills,

including 26,000 in the UK.

Redburn Loughview Community

Forum became involved in Time-

banking through Robert Mahaffey

– Housing Executive and Sinead

Quinn from Volunteer Now as a

partnership project.’

Timebank it is still relatively

new even though it has been

going since the 1980s’ so it took

some time to bed in, however

once the community realised

that they already Timebank

everyday with their family and

friends by exchanging favours

it became easier understood.

‘It is a fantastic way of getting

to know your neighbours,’ says

Louise, ‘meet likeminded people

and share skills and use your

banked hours when you need

them. The exchanges range from

Lifts for shopping, to sewing,

training learning new skills like

first aid, food hygiene. It can be

as simple as taking a telephone

call or collecting some shopping

for a member. Each exchange

is treated the same 1hour for 1

hour regardless of skill base or

profession. We have volunteers

that exchange skills regularly

and give their hours to Timebank

members that cannot accumulate

the hours necessary to complete

a task ie decorating or gardening,

due to health restrictions.’

It is very rewarding to see that

neighbours and members of the

community want to get involved

and participate and is equally

rewarding to see how by par-

ticipating in Timebank members

have said it has reduced their

feeling of isolation and loneliness

and through Timebank they have

met new friends, and their self-

confidence has grown. ‘They have

used the connection with Time-

bank to access further education

to further enhance their skills

and gain employment which has

changed their lives. Now that is

rewarding to see…’

CULTURE NIGHT 2014Holywood Culture Night returns on Friday 19th September and this years is shaping up to be the biggest yet! As you may know, the event emerged from a series of meetings initiated by Holywood Shared Town which brought together businesses, community groups and statutory agencies to discuss ways of re-invigorating Holywood Town Centre.Culture Night was one such idea which Holywood Shared Town decided to pursue. The first night took place in 2012 and now two years on the event has captured the imaginations and generosity of local residents and businesses alike. Local singer/songwriter and business woman Mari Jackson who has performed at the event for the past two years, decided to become involved as an organiser this year in conjunction with Holywood Shared Town and the union is proving to be a key ingredient for success. Donations, favours and time have all been shared amongst the organisers and the line up of the night on 19th September is looking extraordinary!

A marketing plan was hatched

both in the physical and digital

realms. Local businesses decided

to get on board to help give some-

thing back to their community

and funds quickly grew to cover

the necessary event costs. To date

over 90 acts have been secured

to perform at the one day event

on Friday 19th September 2014

including soloists, duets, bands,

dance troupes, impersonators, po-

ets, drama troupes, art exhibitions,

children’s street entertainers, and

many more. The event will com-

mence early with many businesses

offering a variety of activities

both inside and outside (weather

permitting), including discounts

on products and services. The fun

starts at around 3pm with buskers

and various acts dotted along the

pavements of the town centre

and inside some of its cafes and

restaurants. The High St will then

be closed off from 6pm - 9pm to

allow room for many bigger events

and stage acts to begin although

Church Road, Sullivan Place, Hi-

bernia Street & lower High Street

will continue to offer a wealth of

activities during these hours. A

multicultural quarter will showcase

the diverse nature of Holywood

and will include drum workshops,

film, food and dance, while

Holywood Library will host a WW1

exhibition, alongside many other

activities, as we celebrate the

centenary of 1914. A tea dance

for the over 55’s will take place in

the Unitarian Church hall. Later

on in the day, many popular bands

will be playing in the local pubs

and clubs until closing times.

Support has come in from many

different routes, including Ho-

lywood’s own Rory McIlroy, who

has sponsored Party Golf for the

children. A “Just Giving” page

LOCAL PRODUCERS POPPING UP

County Down company BiteToSavour is amongst a

creative mob of local producers, artists and crafts-

people who are teaming up to take over the former

Easons’ store in Belfast City Centre this September

under the collaboration leader ‘Merchant&Maker’

to transform it’s abandoned and desolate shell into

a dazzling pop-up Bazaar that will celebrate all

things hand-crafted and locally produced.

The Merchant & Maker pop-up

shop will act as an exuberant

exhibition and retail space for

local artists and producers to

sell their products and market

their businesses at the location

in Donegall Place. Merchant

& Maker Belfast 2014 will be

made up of a colourful assort-

ment of handcrafted textiles,

jewellery, and beautiful baked-

good stalls and much more.

Amongst those exhibiting is the

latest in good-food retail and

distribution; BITETOSAVOUR

who source locally produced

products that are carefully

selected by their tasting team

and send them to their good-

food loving customers through

a seasonal subscription so they

can experience and discover

new flavours throughout the

year. This autumn, however

BitetoSavour will be bringing

their gourmet goodies straight to

the high street where they can

be both sampled and purchased

directly from their shop within

the Merchant&Maker store.

BitetoSavour’s proprietor Jenna

Stevenson says she is incred-

ibly excited to be a part of it all.

‘BitetoSavour are dedicated to

helping small food producers

get their products on to the mar-

ket and so the whole concept

Merchant& Maker is very fitting

and we can’t wait to be a part of

it. In a society were almost eve-

5 things you need to know Losing your job is upsetting, however, if you feel you have been unfairly

dismissed this can add even more stress to your situation. An employer

can dismiss an employee for a whole host of reasons, however, the good

news is that the law is fairly clear when it comes to employment matters

and there must have been a good reason for doing so. An employer also

needs to ensure they have followed the company’s formal dismissal or

disciplinary processes at all times. The list below llustrates some of the

key considerations you need to be aware of:

As well as making it much

harder to remember key

facts, leaving things too

long could void your claim.

Employment law has much

shorter limitation dates than

other areas of law and any

action must be issued within

3 months of your dismissal.

Whilst your first reaction

may be to ignore your

employer’s communications

after you have left, it is

important that you can

demonstrate you have abided

by and participated in the

company’s employment

processes. Failure to do so,

such as ignoring an invitation

harm your chances of success

if you subsequently decide

to issue proceedings. You

should also keep copies of

all letters received from and

sent to your employer, as

these may be important when

preparing your claim.

Whilst Legal Aid is not

available for employment

claims, it is worth noting

that many home insurance

policies include an option

to include legal expenses.

If your insurance policy

includes this level of cover

you may find that your legal

expenses will be covered.

an alternative resolution to

your grievances, such as a

This can save a lot of time

resolution.

Being dismissed from your

job is very stressful and

upsetting no matter your

circumstances. If you feel

you have been unfairly

notes together and seek legal

advice sooner rather than

and outline the options

The event took place on September 12, 1989 in the Ulster Hall. To mark the occasion Murray, now a celebrated coach and promoter, is gathering SEVEN home-grown fighting stars of the present and future who will all challenge for a world title on the night of September 13 2014. “It feels like just a heartbeat since that night my heart was racing and I

stepped through the ropes,” said Murray. “He’d beaten me once before, but he wasn’t going to beat me that night in front of my Belfast. I’ve had an incredible and wonderful career since then but that night set me on the way, I felt that I had to mark it and there’s no better way for me, and for the sport I love, than to look to the future.” Murray’s career has taken him from the simple gym in East Belfast, where he still turns out champion after champion, to the seat of governments in Europe. He saw the way his sport could unite communities;

his gym has long been known as a zero-tolerance zone for sectarianism. Billy visits schools, especially in tough areas teaching a message of self-respect and self-control with his motto Truth, Discipline and Respect. He helped co-found The Peace Fighters - a sports initiative dedicated to helping young people.

The ProKick Gym owner has also guided, promoted, and managed 10 world champions, 23 European (or Intercontinental) champions and numerous national champions. He takes teams across the globe without any official funding - it’s all paid for through fundraising by friends and families of the brave and eager young fighters.

Belfast’s Billy Murray is marking an incredible career milestone with a

glittering event at the Ulster Hall this September 13th also featuring

Holywood Karate Club’s Cathy McAleer! Most would say he is the man

accredited with helping popularise kickboxing in Ireland and he l̀l celebrate

25 years since becoming professional world champion for the first time.

business, Brenda Fraser said; ‘As

a new business these were La

Coquine’s first entries into the

Great Taste Awards and we are

over the moon that all our prod-

from well-known and established

chocolate companies. This pres-
