ontentscWe have another jam packed edition in store for you this month. And if it actually was metaphorically packed with jam then it would be pretty much oozing out the sides and all over the show. Which roughly translated means there’s quite a bit to read inside the magazine this month. And once you read it you then convert that into stuff to do. The unavoidable changing of the weather vibes never signals any kind of deceleration in events and gatherings. In fact inside and outside, there will always be

WELCOME!something to stick in your filofax to do in the month ahead. We have a vast array of it for you ranging from the seasonal craft fairs and pre chrimbo get togethers (which means the mulled wine will be on the go) to food, art, charity news, property, local business expertise and a whole lot more. Remember, if there’s something you know about that we don’t know about then let us know about it and we can let the readers know about it too. And they can read all about it. What about that?Nice one. Enjoy!

Priory College and local business Little Wing, have joined forces

to deliver a new Senior School Reward Programme. In a new ini-

tiative every pupil has the chance to have their hard work and /

or good behaviour recognised by teachers in a ‘positive referrals’

week at the end of each month. Every time a pupil receives a

positive referral they accrue points, and those pupils gaining the

most points will get a voucher for a delicious pizza slice or hot

drink of their choice. Head of Senior School, Ms Ferguson did a

little market research at the end of last year to see what pupils

wanted from their reward system. ‘Our pupils wanted either

food or drinks as their rewards and with Little Wing opening in

Holywood it seemed like a perfect fit. We approached Little Wing

and they agreed to sponsor our new rewards programme. Little

Wing are always keen to work in partnership with their local com-

munity and all of us in Priory College look forward to developing

that relationship in the future’.

Northern Ireland Karate Association had huge success on the teams

tour of Argentina. The NI junior team travelling and competed in two

major events; Pan American Open championship and the WKC, World

Karate Championships. “What a massive experience and achievement,

to compete, travel to amazing country and meet so many different

competitors from all around the world, said Sensei Cathy McAleer.

“This was a very high standard event however there was a lower

attendance due to location, price and distance and only the top in each

country were able to travel and compete.” The team achieved 6 world

champions, 2 silver and 8 bronze medals, across the two discipline

kata and kumite and Cathy couldn’t have been happier with the teams

performance and results. If you’d like to participate in karate, contact

There are all kinds of reasons for supporting.

Whether you take part as an entrant, help as

a steward or simply attend as a member of the

audience, we believe that you will greatly enjoy

the experience.

And this is why we make this statement so con-

fidently. First, the Festival attracts well over 500

entries across a wide range of classes, everything

from Irish traditional music and music theatre to

solo singers and instrumentalists and choirs. You

will have plenty of variety.

Second, the Festival brings in to Holywood

something like 3,000 people from very different

backgrounds, so you will meet those who share

your interest in music-making and your pleasure

in being actively involved.

And third, you will see and hear performances

of many different kinds, many of them given by

children and young people who have little or no

experience of standing in front of an audience –

ONE OF THE OLDEST FESTIVALS, WITH ONE OF THE LONGEST UNBROKEN HISTORIES, BEGINS ON THURSDAY, 13th NOV AND GOES ON UNTIL THE END OF THE FOLLOWING WEEK. THE CHAIRMAN OF THE HOLYWOOD MUSIC FESTIVAL COMMITTEE JOHN YOUNG EXPLAINS THE MAGIC.

and an adjudicator – and being assessed on what

they do. You will also hear the comments, advice

and guidance of our adjudicators, all of them

experts in their chosen areas and all very highly

experienced. And you will see all the performers

listening intently to what the adjudicators say,

learning how well they have done and reflecting

on the steps they can take be perform at an even

higher level in future.

You will see performers grow in confidence and

self-belief, in other words, and you will, as a

result, understand what this Festival is all about

and why the committee of dedicated volunteers

who make it happen believe it is worthwhile.

So, make an effort to join us at the Queen’s Hall

in Holywood. You can find classes scheduled for

each day from our published programme or from

our website. You can buy tea and coffee while

you are there and our admission charges are

ridiculously low. I look forward to meeting you.

A. Letting your family know your wishes is impor-

tant. However if you do not have a written Will

which has been properly signed and witnessed

it will result in your property being distributed in

accordance with the strict rules of Intestacy. If

the wishes you expressed do not adhere to these

rules your Estate may have to make additional

applications to Court which may lead to a delay

in distributing your assets and increased costs.

In some cases the matter may end up having to

be resolved through the High Court.

would recommend you take legal advice from a

qualified professional in that country to ensure

your Will can be drafted in the manner you wish.

NOVEMBEREVERY NOVEMBER PEOPLE ACROSS NORTHERN IRELAND ARE ENCOURAGED TO THINK ABOUT MAKING THEIR WILLS. HERE IS SOME GUIDANCE ON QUESTIONS WE ARE FREQUENTLY ASKED TO ASSIST YOU WITH YOUR WILL.

Q. I’ve already told everyone what I want so why do I need a Will?

Q. I have property abroad, does my Will in Northern Ireland cover this? A. Wills are drafted to take into account your

worldwide assets, therefore a Will drafted in

Northern Ireland can certainly take foreign

property into account. You are entitled to draft a

further Will in the country your property is situ-

ated but be careful it does not inadvertently re-

voke the Will you made in Northern Ireland. You

should also be mindful that some other countries

do have forced succession rules and the terms

of your Will may not be valid in that country. We

Q. I am due to get married soon, how will this affect my Will? A. Entering into a Marriage or a Civil Partner-

ship will automatically revoke an existing Will,

unless the Will was made in contemplation of the

upcoming event. In contrast a Divorce will not

automatically revoke a Will and only the portions

of the Will which refer to your ex spouse will be

invalid. It is always advisable to review your Will

following a divorce or marriage to ensure it will

still follow your wishes.

These are just a small number of queries we are

asked on a regular basis and we would always

advise that having a professionally drafted Will

is the best course of action. Contact us today to

arrange an initial consultation. We can discuss

your personal circumstances and draft a Will that

suits your needs.

HEALTHBEAUTY &WELLBEINGI see and hear women constantly criticising themselves. We focus

on every flaw. So, my advice - avoid magnifying mirrors, throw away

the celeb mags, learn to feel good in your own skin. Smile and

smile more. It is the warmest, most open and endearing feature of

any person. It puts people at ease and it draws you towards them.

HOW DOES THIS RELATE TO HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR BODY?

“Debs7 Station Square, Helen’s Bay • 028 9185 2859 • deborahharperbeauty.co.uk

somewhere, doing something,

Well I passionately believe that if you look after your mind, your body

will feel the benefits and you can take care of the mind by also taking

care of the exterior. This is not superficial or indulgent - it is, I would

argue, essential. I am not going to speak for all beauty salons, not

all will have the same ethos, but what I aim to achieve every day, for

every client is from the moment you come through the door of the sa-

lon, you relax. A lovely smell, a smiling face, you take a seat, turn your

phone off, a sip of water, have 5 minutes to breathe, there is no noise,

it is still and peaceful. Already something has happened in your day

that you probably don’t get the chance to do very often. You simply sit.

The smiling face returns and tells you to follow them into a dimly lit

room, candles sparkle, there is a treatment couch, the therapist gives

you instructions and you are left, in the dark, with the candles, the

towel and you have to lie down. Lie down?! in the middle of the day?!

(Yes, and you do as it would be weird in this story if you dont.)

You lie down, and the friendly girl

comes back in. There are lovely

smells, you experience touch.

You breathe deeply and the fears

begin to pass and the sense of

wellbeing increases. This doesn’t

just happen in a massage, I have

seen people relax deeply during a

15 min eyebrow wax, a pedicure,

file and paint, a facial. This is

your space. If you want to chat

you can, if you want to close your

eyes, fall asleep or simply flick

the switch in your brain to off

mode that is all good!

I cannot explain just how much

this matters. You will feel brighter,

you may feel emotional, (and

we all sometimes need a valve

to release the pressure) you will

feel your spirits lift and you will

have something nice to show for

it! Pretty toes, lighter shoulders,

neat eyebrows, hair free upperlip,

buffed and polished soft skin.

RORY MCILROY OPENS DAISY LODGE THERAPEUTIC CENTRETHE CENTRE WHICH HAS ALREADY WELCOMED OVER 150 FAMILIES CAN PROVIDE EVERY FAMILY AFFECTED BY CHILDHOOD

CANCER IN NI WITH A FREE THERAPEUTIC SHORT BREAK AND ALSO CATERS TO FAMILIES IN THE ROI. THIS INCLUDES FAMILIES NURSING A CHILD WITH CANCER, BEREAVED FAMILIES AND FAMILIES WHERE A PARENT HAS BEEN DIAGNOSED WITH CANCER.

Rory first visited Daisy Lodge last Christmas

to see how work on the new building was

progressing and to meet some of the young people

we support. At the official opening he said, “This

place is a miracle. Families arrive here exhausted

having been told that their child has cancer and

having to spend a lot of time on the hospital ward.

A short break at Daisy Lodge gives them a chance

to escape that and be together as a family. Coming

from a loving family myself I appreciate how

important that is. It really touched me emotionally

when I came here before Christmas. I’m fortunate

that I can help financially or even turn up and take

photos or sign autographs. This is about giving

back and being able to help others.”

Daisy Lodge provides exhausted families with the

chance to relax and spend quality time together. It

features age-appropriate play areas, a games room

and an outdoor playground as well as spa and gym

facilities for the adults. Families can enjoy views of

the Mourne Mountains through the large windows

and savour nutritious, home cooked meals. A

team of experienced specialists are available to

help families cope with the impact cancer has on

their lives. NI Cancer Fund for Children became

an early beneficiary of Rory’s decision to start his

own charitable Foundation. The Rory Foundation

was established to offer support to charities with a

special meaning for Rory.

Since welcoming the first families in April 2014,

Daisy Lodge has become a member of Taste of

Ulster thanks to a commitment to provide fresh,

nutritious, locally sourced meals. It has also been

awarded a prestigious international Green Apple

award for environmental sustainability and best

practice and won the Construction Excellence

Award. The NI Cancer Fund for Children is also a

charity that Holywood Chamber of Commerce has

raised funds for at networking events.
