FROM THE EDITORIt has been another successful month for the Emu Leonay Sporting Community. This month we saw many winter sporting competitions come to an end and with that, many successful teams making it to Finals and Grand Finals.

Spring is an exciting time for our junior athletes as they get to play Finals and Grand Finals in front of larger than normal crowds thanks to all their grandparents and friends turning up to watch.

There is much debate around today about whether junior sport should focus on keeping score or be purely about participation.

Why canʼt it be about both?

Sure, participation needs to be a main focus, but ensuring it is fun for everyone involved needs to take priority above anything else.

The kids who play in Semi Finals and Grand Finals will no doubt hold onto the memories of excitement that go with these games as long as they live. Whether it is the U/8s div 6 or U/18s Div 1, hopefully our kids will look back with the fondest of memories of the games they have played with their mates.

This month we celebrate the success of those teams making it to the Finals regardless of the result on the day. Win or lose, making it there is a huge accomplishment and one to be proud of!

Leonay Publ ic School Captain, Mitchell Willingham , has been selected to compete  for the NSW PSSA State Athletics team at the upcoming School Sport Australia National Championships in Darwin, NT. The 12 year old long jumper will compete at the championships to be held from the 17th to the 20th September  2011. Mitchell qualified for the team at state selection trials on 31 July  2011 at Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush jumping 4.94m.  Mitch's preparation for Darwin appears to be on track with success at the Penrith Zone PSSA District Carnival on 24 &  25 August, winning gold in the Long Jump, High Jump, 100m,  200m as well as being  a member of the 4x100m winning school relay team for Senior Boys.  His final preparation for Darwin will be representing Leonay Public School and the Penrith Zone at S y d n e y W e s t R e g i o n Championships on the 14th September, the day before he flies out to the Northern Territory.  M i t c h e l l h a s m a i n t a i n e d h i s commitment to athletics, representing Leonay Public School at State level for the past three years. He won a gold medal in 2009 for Long Jump, and finished second at the School Sport Australia (Nationals) that same year, a

truly remarkable performance. He has also been a member of Emu Plains Little Athletics Club since he was 6 years old and is looking forward to the new season that starts on the same weekend that he is in Darwin.

Mitchell has been training particularly hard at this time of t h e y e a r d u e t o t h e Championships being brought

temperatures and the wet season which is normally experienced in December.

The speedy young athlete trains twice a week at Blacktown Olympic Park, under the guidance of coach Sheridan Goh, as well as once a week at Leonay Oval with Emu Plains Little Athletics Club.

Mitchell will be hoping to better his personal best jump of 5.09m to go one better than the silver medal in the same event in 2009. “It is a really tough field with some really good long jumpers so iʼll have to be at my best to do well there”, Mitchell says.

Mitchell is also a keen footballer and plays in the U/12s with Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Club. The flying winger was also a member of the Leonay Public School league team that took out the Panther Trophy earlier this year.

Asked what his preference is between the 2 sports, Mitchell says, “I love playing footy but I reckon Long Jump is my favourite”.

LOCAL LEGEND

If you were to ask ex students from Leonay Public School who their most inspirational teacher was from their school days, chances are they would respond with, “Nad”. They would be referring to Nad Pillay. Nad has had a significant impact on the lives of so many students, not only the ones from Leonay Public School, but from all over Western Sydney.

Nad Pillay moved to Australia from South Africa in 1971 at the tender age of 21. He left his family behind in hope of a better life after witnessing first hand the hardships that a man of Indian heritage would have to endure in such a racially volatile country. Nad settled in the leafy suburb of Leonay with his wife Ann and still lives in the same house now where he has raised his 2 daughters, Nadine and Merryn.

Nad grew up with a real passion for sport and soccer was the main sport he excelled at. He was a talented young striker for Bluebells United and even represented his home State Transvaal. Upon mov ing to Aust ra l ia , Nad continued to play soccer and even played in a friendly game for Marconi.

In 1983 Nad leased the Leonay Squash Courts. During this time squash was a thriving sport in the area with many people from the local area playing in

n i g h t c o m p e t i t i o n s . N a d a l s o developed a stable of talented young p layers too. “We used to run competitions on Saturday mornings for young kids from Leonay PS and would usually get 20 or more kids turn out to play”.

“Iʼve seen many talented junior players come through the Leonay Squash Centre . “A Grade p layers l ike Shannon Fuller, Mark Whithers and Griska Kleinveldt all played there as youngsters”.

Nad has always advocated a healthy lifestyle for the students he has taught. But he acknowledges that school work and academic performance takes priority over playing sport. “I would always get my kids out there playing sport as much as I could, but not before they had completed the class work that was required of them”.

“I used to take kids like Stuart Meyers, Matt Devries and Clayton Jude out onto the golf course to play golf for sport”.

Former student from the 1980ʼs, Dinesh S ingham r eca l l s Nad organising huge games during lunch time. “He would start these massive games of cricket where there were 30 or 40 kids vying for a bat or a bowl”. “I remember it being a great atmosphere in the school at the time”.

“The kids come first in everything I do at school. I care more about the learning and welfare of kids than anything else in teaching”, says Nad.

Those who have been taught by Nad know that to be very true.

These days you are likely to see Nad playing a leisurely couple of holes with one club in his hand or Saturday competition at Leonay Golf Course. Whether he is playing competitively or not, Nadʼs philosophy towards the game is the same. “Just enjoy it, mate”!

HOCKEY WOMEN GIVE A BIT OF STICK TO THEIR OPPOSITIONEmu Plains Hockey Club had a lot to cheer about this year. Celebrating their 40th season in the Penrith/Nepean Hockey Association, the Emus won both the 2nd and 3rd Grade Womenʼs competitions.

2nd Grade beat Penrith RSL 3-0 whilst 3rd Grade caused a massive upset by defeating the Misfits 6-0. “The Misfits are made up of experienced women who have been playing at a top level for a long time now and they had beaten us on both occasions this year, so it was a great achievement from our girls”, says C lub V i ce P res i den t , Miche l l e Kennedy.

It was a memorable day for Michelle as she actually played in both the 2nd and 3rd Grade Grand Finals.

EMU HARD MAN ENTERS THE RING WITH JOHN HOPOATE Former Emu Plains JRLC enforcer Garth Williams is preparing for the fight of his life at Panthers on Friday 23rd September. The hard as nails front rower will be taking on former NRL bad boy John Hopoate in the Elite Cage

Championships. Garth will no doubt have plenty of supporters in his corner and heʼll need every bit of support from the local crowd if he is going to survive the night.

AFL BEATEN IN THE BIG ONE The Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions unfortunately lost both their Grand Finals this year.

The U/12 Div 1 lost to Camden 43-80 and the U/14 Div 1 coached by Mark McDonagh lost to Hawkesbury City 28-60.

Jack Noble and Brayden Saint-Barry from the U/14s have been selected in the Greater Western Sydney U/14s team which will travel to Albury in October for the State Trials.

EMUS HAVE SIGHTS SET ON BEING CHAMPIONS OF CHAMPIONS The high flying Emu Plains FC U/15 Div 1 team remained undefeated for the season, taking out the competition decider against Glossodia 3-1.

The boys will now participate in the NSW Champions of Champions tournament against the best U/15s teams in the State. Their first opposition

JUMPING SUCCESS - EHPSEmu Heights Public School students Lyndall Jones, Lachlan Jones and Elise Ginger have picked up a swag of awards at the recent NSW State Level Championships at Homebush last month.

The trio participate in both tumbling and trampolining and train out of the Kchan School of Tumbling and Performance at Windsor. Tumbling is one of the gymnastics disciplines which combines some of the skills of artistic gymnastics on the floor with those of trampolining. Many would not realise that it was actually a demonstration sport at the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games.

Lachlan (9) picked up a gold medal in the Level 2 Trampolining, a silver in the floor/tumbling and a bronze in the single mini tramp. Lyndall (11) won 2 bronze medals. One in the Level 2 tumbling and another in the Level 3 Trampolining and a 4th place in the Level 3 mini tramp. Elise (7) managed to pick up a bronze in the Level 3 tumbling.

DANCERS SHINE ON CENTRE STAGE - EPPS Students from Emu Plains Public School recently performed at the Blue Mountains Dance Festival at the Joan Sutherland Centre. The school had two entries. One was the Hip Hop Dance Group, which had boys and girls from Years 3 and 5, and the other was the Senior Dance Group which had boys and girls from Years 5 and 6.

The school has taken part in this dance festival for many years and the children really love performing at it.

On sunday 11th sept a select few from EPPS Senior Dance Group competed in the Elite Dance Competition at Glenmore Park High School and were awarded 3rd place.

16 of the children, 5 boys and 11 girls, have recently auditioned and were chosen to perform at the 2011 School Spectacular on Nov 25th and 26th at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. The group of highly talented dancers were very excited to be able to perform in such a wonderful show that showcases the most talented student dancers from all over NSW.

HOME RUN TO AMERICAKurt Berry from Nepean High School recently visited America for two weeks where he played baseball and did some touring. He left on the 1st of August with 14 players, 2 coaches and one manager. They competed in the Under 15ʼs Kenko Tournament held in Elisville, St Louis, Missouri.

With many teams playing in the Tournament including 3 from USA, 2 from Europe (Germany), 2 from Japan and one team from Australia. Kurt had the honour of holding the Australian flag in the opening ceremony. He was man of the match in one game and in all games gave 110%.

They didnʼt win any of their games in America because the baseball level is higher in o t h e r c o u n t r i e s t h a n Australia. The experience

was great though and many friends were made. The team participated in White Water Rafting and they visited The Arch and the Whispering Wall. They also got to see a game between the St Louis Cardinals and the Milwalkee Brewers. Kurt put on about 5 kilograms due to the diet in America but it was worth it. T h i s i s a s e n s a t i o n a l achievement and he should be commended.Written by Yr 9 studentsTrent Holloway & Pritam Singh

“Young Elise Ginger has really shown a lot of potential at such a young age and is now individually coached due to the recognised talent she possesses” says Rhonda Jones, Lyndall and Lachlanʼs mum.

years of age, his golf game is maturing and he is gaining consistency from week-to-week. He is sure to be a key player in next seasonʼs Pennant series, a crucial year for the team looking to rebuild itself into a force once again.August was a big month at the club, with some key mid-year events won with some outstanding scoring. The Nepean R ive r Bow l was ho t l y contested, with the team of Rob Whitney, Brad McKeown, Greg Murphy and Mick Ison returning a scintillating 195 to take out the handicap event. Chris Blakeley showing his form to win the Ray Dukes Cup involved a gradual build-up, teaming with his father Mal Blakeley and Doug Richards to win the scratch event with 232. Mick Ison (25) also took out the Autumn Cup for the best individual nett score of the day with a fine 62.The Col Roffe Day sponsored by Ricoh is always a popular event, the four-

The Medley event was fittingly taken out by Violet Roffeʼs team, combining with Greg Hartwell, Caroline Fitzpatrick and Peter Walker (10 ½) with 53 ½ .The scratch was closely contested, with Ben Miller, Aaron Miller, Matt Devries and Cameron Faico recording an -11 under par 56 to win by a stroke. The Monthly Medal winners for August were Bruce Grant, Ron Bradley, Mark Levy and Ron Coates. STORAGE SHED FOR CRICKET CLUBApproximately 12 months ago Emu Plains Cricket Club applied for, and was successful in receiving, a grant via the NSW governmentʼs Department of Sport a n d R e c r e a t i o n F a c i l i t y G r a n t Program.  For many years the club has used the cricket nets at the back of Nepean High School as its home base, and located next to the nets was an old steel shipping container that was used to

store various bits and pieces of equipment. Over the years the container has rusted out, creating leaks, and it has also been broken into.

Club President Martin Bowerman, couldnt be happier. “We applied for a grant to build a brick storage shed, with separate rooms for the cricket club and the school to use. This involved putting together an application to Sport and Rec describing how this facility would benefit the local sporting community.  The grant was to cover half of our quote.  Anyway, we were successful and the Shed has now been completed”.

An official opening of the shed was held on Saturday Sept 10 at the clubʼs final training session before the start of the new season. Many thanks are extended to PF Concrete for supplying all of the concrete and to Jim Micsko and his father for their hard work in getting the shed built.

EPCC Committee at the opening of the new storage shed at Nepean High School

Emu Plains Junior Rugby League Club have finished a very successful 2011, winning 3 junior premierships and making the Grand Final in 3 other age groups. The U/8s Div 7 defeated Mt Druitt PCYC 16-6, U/9 Div 3 defeated Riverstone 22-0, and the U/10 Div 6 beat Hawkesbury City 26-12.

In the Sunday competition, Emu Plains lost to St Marys in the U/17 Div 1. The Barry Walker coached team were a big chance to take out the title this year after beating St Marys in the Major Semi Final. The boys were well and truly in the game at half time trailing only 10-6 but a few injuries to key players at crucial points in the game proved too much for Emu to contain the St Marys attack. In the end the much fancied St Marys team ran out easy winners 40-10.

The A Reserve Grade Div 1 were very unlucky not to take out the premiership after losing on the bell to St Marys. After trailing by 4 at half time, Emu came out strong and scored early to take the lead by 2. They managed to hold on tight to this lead with some very solid defence on their own line until some simple errors and a dubious call from the referee gifted St Marys the ball in the last minute of the game.

Although they did not take out any Sunday premierships, Emu Plains won a number of individual Penrith Junior League awards. Jarod Brackenhofer was named U/17 Penrith District Player of the Year, whilst Tim Wrigley was

named A Reserve Grade Player of the Year. Considering Tim only started playing 4 rounds into the season demonstrates just how dominant he was throughout the year in this competition.Terry Maddigan was named Junior League Trainer of the Year for his years of dedication and commitment in his role as Trainer, and John Corey was named Mod League Coach of the Year for his great effort with the Emu Plains U/10-1s.

EMU PLAINS NETBALL CLUBEPNC has ended the season on a high after winning 5 out of 7 Grand Finals.

The 9A Angels had a stunning come from behind victory to win by 1 goal in extra time. The girls were trailing 5-3 heading into the final quarter and the opposition quickly extended their lead with 3 quick goals. However, the Angels showed their never say die attitude and rallied late in the game to score 5 quick goals to equalise the scores at full-time. With extra time being 3 minutes each way, the teams went goal for goal and fortunately the final siren sounded when they were ahead 12-11.

Coaches Danielle Walker and Larissa Canning should be commended for their efforts with the young side.

Other notable victories for the club include the 16B Icons, A2 Shamrocks winning by 2 goals, B1 Redbacks, and the B4 Illusions winning by 12 goals after being runners up for the past 2 seasons.

BUZZWORD

DID YOU KNOW.............Since the McIntyre System was introduced for the NRL Final series in 1999, every single Grand Final winner has started the finals in the top four.

The Minor Premiers have only won the premiership 4 times out of 12 using the McIntyre System (33 per cent), but they have made the GF 9 times.

The team finishing 3rd in the minor premiership has a 3 from 3 record and the 4th placed team has a 2 from 2 record when they have made the GF

In the 12 years of the McIntyre System, only 4 teams have made the GF coming from outside of the top 4. In other words, stats show that if you are going to make, or win the GF, you must finish the regular season in the top 4.
