Introduction to 3G:Introduction to 3G:y 3G or 3rd Generation, is a generation of

    standards for mobile phones .

y Compared to the older 2G and 2.5G standards,

3G provide peak data rates of at least 200kbit/s.

In 2008, India entered the 3G arena with the launch

of 3G enabled Mobile and Data services by

Government owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.

    (BSNL).

    IntroductionIntroduction to 4G:to 4G:y 4G

stands for the fourth generation of cellularwireless standards.

y It is a successor to 3G and 2G families of

standards. Speed requirements for 4G service setthe peak download speed at 100 Mbit/s and

    1 Gbit/s.

y 4G provide an end-to-end IP solution where voice

and data is going to be served to users.

    0FDMModulation:0FDMModulation:y In Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM), a

large number of closely-spaced orthogonal sub-carriers are

    used to carry data.

    11/18

    TransmitterTransmitter

y An OFDM carrier signal is the sum of a number oforthogonal sub-carriers, with baseband data on eachsub-carrier.

y some type of quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM)

or phase-shift keying (PSK) used to modulate a main RFcarrier.

  • 8/7/2019 SEMINAR PRESENTATION3g 4g

    12/18

    ReceiverReceiver

y The receiver picks up the signal , which is thenquadrature-mixed down to baseband using cosine and

sine waves at the carrier frequency

y The baseband signals are sampled and digitised usinganalogue-to-digital converters (ADCs), and a forward FFTis used to convert back to the frequency domain.

    Benefits of4G:Benefits of4G:

y High speed, high capacity, and low cost per bit.

    y Support interactive multimedia, voice,

streaming video, Internet, and other broadband

    services.

y Global access, service portability, and scalable

    mobile services.

    y Smooth handoff across heterogeneousnetworks.

    Drawbacks:Drawbacks:

    y Sensitive to Doppler shift.

    y Bandwidth requirement is high.

    y Sensitive to frequency synchronization

    problems.

    y High peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR),

    requiring linear transmitter circuitry, which

    suffers from poor power efficiency.

3G and 4G mobile is a major opportunity forbusiness, commerce and consumers

Brings together the two fastest growing marketsectors - Mobile and Internet

Market, services and standards evolving from 2Gto 3G

Significant opportunities for value added content

and service providers 4G - a promising Generation of wireless
