Introduction
On December 1, 1913 when Henry Ford’s first assembly line whirred
into production it reduced the production time of his Model T from
over 12 hours to 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Industrialisation made work more efficient.
The hope was that life too would be simpler and easier.
However, this early 20th Century vision has not fared well as the pace
of life and the aspirations of people have dramatically changed in our
high tech global village.

21st Century Reality for most Executives is
In short, many of us are:
A smart phone dominated life making work a 24/7 proposition
A partner who also works and childcare that is a daily juggling act
Waking in the middle of the night anxious about a work issue
Reading a story to your child with part of your mind on an email you need to send
Working hard to get a week off, and still having to check emails… just in case
Wondering in your rare quiet moments, whether the pace and pressure is worth it
Craving a drink every afternoon
Wishing your fitness and energy levels were greater
1. Overwhelmed
2. Surviving rather than thriving
3. Struggling with the blurred boundary lines between work and life
To make matters worse, we point the blame for these issues everywhere but
at our own feet. To our bosses, our company, our partners, technology. We
need to take responsibility for making everything fit together… instead of just
hoping things will work out somehow.

Without Self-Leadership - a SCATTERED approachFRANTIC
This describes the poorly organised person who is always reacting to issues as they arise. She is often late for
appointments. Her desk is a chaotic mess. She seems to attract personal crises that regularly overlap with work. Overall she
is unreliable, always pushing out deadlines. She has little capacity to influence others other than to enlist their help to reduce
her overwhelm.
FEARFUL
This is the Executive who is working harder than he expected to build his chosen career. And it is becoming harder not
easier, as he is juggling increasing responsibilities of a young family, a wife seeking to reignite her career, mortgage
payments for the recently purchased upgraded family home, as well as trying to stay fit and connected to his mates in the
cricket/rugby club. He is fearful that he has not got what it takes to make his career and lifestyle work. He feels like he is just
surviving; barely coping with all the challenges. Something has got to give and he hopes it is not his mental health.
[In order to cope some decide to prioritise career and allow life outside of work to land wherever it falls. This can lead to
increased capacity and some career progress, at the expense of overall fulfilment as inevitably his life outside work
struggles.]
FLAT
These are those Executives who have hit their ceiling and their career has flat lined. Their lack of selfleadership means they
have no more capacity for growth or change. They are stuck. They either lose their jobs, or get moved sideways to a safe
little corner where they can be of some limited usefulness.
[This is a very insecure place. Often they look around for a new position where they can start all over again.]

With Self-Leadership - an INTEGRATED approach
FUNCTION
This is the Executive who starts to practise an integrated approach to work and life. This will normally come through some
form of personal development training and mentoring. The way forward involves: clear understanding of who she is; clear
and supported career goals and plans; clarity around her unique value; and the mapping and coordination of her whole life
so everything works together sustainably. Learning to lead herself well will see an increase in her capacity to be productive
and to lead others.
FLOW
Describes the Executive who is continuing to grow and to learn about themselves. They become more secure in themselves.
They build strong working relationships all around them. Over time they build a reputation for being a person who gets things
done. They learn to delegate and work with and through others. As this Executive increases in capacity they will inevitably
have opportunity for more responsibility.
FULFILMENT
Executives at this level usually go onto the most senior roles within companies due to their ongoing capacity to influence.
They know themselves well. They have selfrespect and easily earn the respect of others. They live congruently with their
values. They are loyal and attract loyalty. They know how to focus their energy on the main things that bring progress. Their
practise of selfleadership principles across their whole life has enabled them to build a great lifestyle AND a successful
career which is the key to fulfilment.

Poor self-leadership is a bit like aleaky bucketEvery bucket has an optimum capacity which is significantly limited if there are
any holes causing whatever is contained within it to leak out.
This causes major wastage and frustration for anyone seeking to use the
container.
Our selfleadership capacity is always limited by our lack of selfrespect,
selfcare and selfmanagement.

Self-Leadership is made up of 3 important elements:Self-Respect; Self-Care and Self-Management
Most selfleadership books and programs focus on things I would put under the heading of selfmanagement. Things such
as: timemanagement, personal organisation strategies and email management. While this focus on becoming more efficient
is important it is only part of the picture.

Self-Leadership is about BEING aswell as DOING.
It starts with self-respect,and includes self-careand then flows intoself-management.

Self-Leadership starts on the inside. In the way I view myself across my whole life.
Sometime after 35 years of age even high achievers begin to hit the limits of their capacity. The way forward to greater
success is not about working harder or even more efficiently. This is a critical time to hit pause and take a fresh look at who
I am, as well as how I do my work and manage my life.
It’s about learning to celebrate strengths and accept
weaknesses. Selfrespect grows stronger when living
congruently with one’s values. It’s about processing life’s
regrets well. It’s about developing the confidence to gain a
clear voice and stand for something. It is about learning to
honour one’s word. Selfrespect is also a necessary quality
if I am to gain respect from others.
SelfRespect is the key to inner health.
1. Self-Respectenables greater levels ofsecurity and consistency.

2. Self-Care Is about learning to know oneself well, in order to
understand and work with one’s own natural life rhythms.
It involves developing selfcare strategies that enable
consistent replenishment and renewal so that a high
achiever always has energy for high impact times.
SelfCare is the key to energy.
ALL TOGETHER, THESE 3 ELEMENTS MAKE UP SELFLEADERSHIP!SelfLeadership is the key to develop increased CAPACITY for influence.
Involves a commitment to doing whatever it takes to be
personally organised, and to be efficient, so that the
important things consistently get done, and promises are
kept. Selfmanagement is all about establishing effective
disciplines and processes so that one always knows and
can pursue clear priorities.
SelfManagement is the key to sustainability.
