TORONTO IN 2016!
Hello everyone!
Please tentatively save the dates of September 23 and 24, 2016 for the annual meeting in Toronto. As the lead for the Local Organizing Committee, I welcome volunteers to help.
We are already hard at work and hope to provide everyone with an informative scientific program and social events full of camaraderie. Toronto is a world-class city that has something for everyone. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please contact steve@capd-acdp or myself at [email protected] I look forward to seeing everyone there.
The 2014 Annual Meeting: Engaging, Educational and a lot of Fun!
The Montreal Organizing Committee, chaired by Dr. Duy-Dat Vu and ably assisted by Dr. Aaron Dudkiewicz, devoted hundreds of hours toward a thoroughly enjoyable Annual Meeting at the Montreal Marriott Chateau Champlain Hotel.
Here is a photo gallery of memories for those who attended, those who wanted to attend but could not, and those who have already marked the Halifax Annual Meeting in their calendars for 2015. A slide show presentation on the 2014 Annual Meeting may be found at http://capd-acdp.org/Montrealpics
Nine Students presented abstracts on the Saturday of the 2014 Annual Meeting. The judges then selected two presentations to receive the annual 3M ESPE-CAPD Graduate Student Awards.
CAPD wishes to salute all the participants and express our sincere thanks for all who were chosen to journey to Montreal to share their ideas with our members. Dr. Emily Lin Jun Chen, Montefiore Medical Center, The Bronx, New York; Dr. Marie-Lynn Gosselin, University of Toronto, Dr. Nick Lekic, University of Manitoba; Dr. Mohammed Amin Salmasi, University of British Columbia; Dr. Bradford Scheideman, Jacobi Medical Centre, The Bronx, New York ; Dr. Andrew Wong, University of British Columbia. Molly Ehrlich was invited to present but was not able to attend the meeting.
A précis of the abstract presented by each student is featured on the website.
The winners were: Dr. Brad Klus, Univsersity of Manitoba, and Dr. Jonathan Woo, University of British Columbia
Brad Klus, University of Manitoba
Composite bond strength of one and two-step adhesive systems used for restorations on primary teeth using varying acid etch application times.
The objective of this study was to determine whether the composite bond strength acquired using a single step self-etching bonding system is as or more effective when compared to the two step etch-rinse-bond system at clinically relevant in-vitro standards.
Johnathan Woo, University of British Columbia
Quantifying facial morphogenesis in 3D using Optical Projection Tomography
Objectives: In order to study abnormal facial development, reference standards of normal development are required. It is challenging to obtain 3D data on early embryos, since they are comprised of non-differentiated tissue. We used optical projection tomography (OPT) (Bioptonics, UK), which images transparent specimens with UV light. Here we used carefully staged chicken embryos to measure facial morphogenesis over time.
The prize money was split between the two presentation winners

The CAPD/ACDP recognizes that the future national voice of pediatric dentistry in Canada lies within its graduate student population. Whether students are participating in a program within Canada or in the United States, there is one common thread amongst them all - they are linked together and with their active CAPD/ACDP member colleagues through the CAPD/ACDP website at http://capd-acdp.org/GradResearch
Three Things to Keep in Mind
The annual 3M ESPE Graduate Student Research Presentations and Awards are a result
of the partnership formed between 3M ESPE and CAPD/ACDP. The money 3M ESPE generously donates goes to Canadian graduate students in pediatric dentistry who present their research topics at the CAPD/ACDP Annual General Meeting.
Each year up to 10 Graduate students will be invited to the Annual meeting to present their research. Invited students are eligible for the 3M ESPE CAPD/ACDP Graduate Student Award of $500 which is awarded to the best presenter as determined by a panel of judges. 3M ESPE also awards a sample of their product line to all graduate student presenters. For full details please visit http://capd-acdp.org/GradResearch#presentations

The Academy’s highest honour is Honourary Membership, which recognizes an individual deemed to have made outstanding contributions to the advancement of Pediatric Dentistry or to this Academy over a sustained period of time. At the 2014 AGM in Montreal, two Members were recognized: Dr. Dennis Bedard and Dr. Guy Benoit
Dr. Dennis Bedard received his DDS from the University of Alberta in 1978,
He and his wife Bev moved to Toronto, with his three very young children in 1982. He received his diploma in the specialty of Paediatric Dentistry in 1984. Soon thereafter he returned to Edmonton Alberta where he quickly established himself as a guiding light in Paedatric Dentistry. He received his Fellowship from the RCDC in 2003.
Dr. Bedard has been a Clinical Associate Professor, Division of Paediatric Dentistry, University of Alberta, for many years. Undergraduate students have
gleaned invaluable clinical experiences with Dr. Bedard in the near north of Alberta through the Universities Dental Outreach programs.
Dr. Bedard has been active in the profession through the Alberta Dental Association and College, Alberta Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, ASDS, Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, EDDS and the Knights of Columbus. Dr. Bedard has been a stalwart member of CAPD/ACPD and has hosted our AGM. He is a Past President of the Alberta Society of Dental Specialists and the Alberta Association of Paediatric Dentists.
Dr. Bedard has been a guest lecturer at the Edmonton District Dental Society, Edmonton Board of Health, Health and Welfare Canada, St. Albert Board of Health, Athabasca Board of Health, University of Alberta continuing education, Dental Public Health Conference, and St. Joseph’s College, IV Congreso Internacional, Facultad de Odontologia, and Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, and has been a guest instructor at Universidad de San Carlos de Guatemala, Facultad de Odontologia, Disciplina de Odontologia del Nino y del Adolescente.
Perhaps Dr. Bedard’s greatest attribute is his humanity, compassion and caring. Dr. Bedard and his wife Beverly cofounded Dentistry for All (formerly, the Society for Third World Dental Care). Dr. Bedard has lead 16 mission trips to
the poorest areas of Guatemala, 11 missions to Nicaragua and 4 missions to the Philippines. This organization, for which he remains a Board Director, now is an internationally recognized charity organization providing oral health care to developing countries. In the spirit that Dennis and Bev initiated this organization it has attracted countless volunteers. Not ignoring Canada’s own less fortunate he has provided care in Alberta’s near northern communities.
This has allowed him to share his compassion, caring and humanity to impoverished Albertans. Through this outreach he has mentored countless young Albertan dental students in the humanity and caring of our profession.
Dr. Bedard has received accolades from the Canadian Dental Association and has received the Alberta Dental Associations coveted award of excellence.
Dennis and Bev Bedard receiving the CDA Award of Merit
Dr. Benoit at the age of 93 currently resides with his wife in Montreal. His pioneering of Paediatric Dentistry has lead to a strong establishment of the practice of Paediatric Dentistry in Quebec.
This year when the University of Montreal Faculty of Dentistry celebrated its 110th anniversary Dr. Benoit is to be
honored. The Quebec Association of Paedatric Dentistry has previously recognized him for his contribution to children’s oral health.
CAPD’s NEWEST HONOURARY MEMBERS
CAPD’s Honourary Members
Dr. Guy Benoit was one of three ‘pedodontists’ who pioneered dental care for children in Montreal in the 1950’s. He completed his undergraduate DDS at the University of Montreal in 1947. His wife Pauline Rivard graduated in
1948 .He completed his program in pedodontics at the University of Illinois in the early 1950’s.
He returned to Montreal to become the first pedodontist to have a full time private practice in the city. The specialty of pedodontics was only recognized in Quebec in 1972. The practice of Paediatric Dentistry in the 1950’s did not involve local anaesthesia or sedation but good patient management and caring.
Dr. Benoit was instrumental along with Doctor George Perrault in developing undergraduate teaching in Paediatric Dentistry at University of Montreal.
