11/4/2014 1 Sedentary Work Setting & the Impact on the Body Presented by: Ashley M. Varol, M.Ed. During this interactive session, we discuss how having a sedentary work setting can have a significant impact on the body and the mind. We will spend some time demonstrating and practicing ways to add movement into the day. We will discuss: 1. Define the specific health concerns related to a sedentary work life 2. Identify the costs of sedentary employees 3. Discuss challenges in the workplace that may create barriers to a more active work day 4. Identify ways to practice strategies for incorporating movement throughout the work day As our nation faces epidemic levels of obesity, which is directly related to the number hours seated per day, it is important to focus on strategies such as those suggested in this session to counter the effects. Sedentary Work Setting & the Impact on the Body
Presented by:
Ashley M. Varol, M.Ed.
During this interactive session, we discuss how having a sedentary work
setting can have a significant impact on the body and the mind. We will spend some time demonstrating and practicing ways to add movement into
the day. We will discuss: 1. Define the specific health concerns related to a sedentary work life 2. Identify the costs of sedentary employees
3. Discuss challenges in the workplace that may create barriers to a more active work day
4. Identify ways to practice strategies for incorporating movement throughout the work day
As our nation faces epidemic levels of obesity, which is directly related to the number hours seated per day, it is important to focus on strategies such as those suggested in this session to counter the effects.
Define the specific health concerns related to a sedentary work life
Define the specific health concerns related to a sedentary work life
Sedentary work settings are a contributor to many preventable causes of death - obesity, heart disease, cancer (breast and colon) and diabetes (Nelson & Zeratsky, 2012, et al)
Too much time seated decreases your BMD, or bone mineral density, which can result in increased risk of bone fracture if weight
bearing movement isn’t equally a part of our day
Sitting is actually harder on your back than standing, with back pain being one of the leading musculoskeletal injuries/complaints
Discuss challenges in the workplace that may create barriers to a more active work day
Review ways to adjust budgets to meet the need
Wellness programs can result in a “27% reduction in sick leave absenteeism, 26% reduction in healthcare costs and 32% reduction in worker’s compensation and disability management cost claims” (AJHP)
Shared expenses if small business
For every dollar spent, up to $10 ROI (average about $1:$3 ROI)
Studies are showing the impact is more toward employee retention, presenteeism/absenteeism and job satisfaction than an ROI due to rising healthcare costs
Identify ways to practice strategies for incorporating movement throughout the work day
“NEAT” – Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis – low impact movements to keep muscles warm, and both metabolism and circulation occurring throughout your body
Physical activity reduces insulin insensitivity, and reduces hormonal imbalances and both body fat and inflammation
You’ll not only be healthier, but your daily life will be easier
