Be sure to specify “72nd St Station Area.” Construction of Ancillary 1 and Entrance 1 (northwest and northeast corners of 69th Street and Second Avenue respectively) will commence this month. The number of traffic lanes on Second Avenue must be reduced from four to three between 69th and 70th Streets to support these construction activities. Pedestrian walkways will be re-routed as necessary to support construction activities. Restaurant and stores will continue to have access to their entrances. This roadway traffic configuration will remain in effect until these structures have been built. Please see the new work zone configuration in the diagram below. During this time there will be “NO STOPPING ANYTIME” along the western curb lane of Second Avenue from 69th Street to 71st Street. New signage will be posted to ensure motorists are aware of the new restriction and to maintain the curb lane. Drivers in violation of the new regulation will be ticketed. She’ll also explain how geology influenced the construction methods used to build the subway. Project Overview

72nd Street Station Area – March 2014Second Avenue Subway Newsletter

72nd Street Station - Entrance 1 at 69th Street and Second Avenue.

The future 72nd Street Station will have three new entrances including 11 escalators, and five street-level ADA accessible elevators at the southeast corner of 72nd Street and Second Avenue. Current work in this area includes construction of the station cavern and tunnels from the 72nd Street Station to the existing Lexington Av/63rd Street Station. This contract includes the demolition of buildings for ancillary locations at 72nd Street and 69th Street, and requires utility relocation for the installation of support of excavation walls. The estimated completion of this contract is Winter 2014.

A follow-on contract will then complete the mezzanine, platform, ancillary structures, station entrances, and the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for the station. The estimated completion of the follow on contract is Winter 2015. Future plans regarding surface-level staging areas needed for this follow-on work will be conveyed to stakeholders and the community through ongoing project outreach and at regular Construction Advisory Committee meetings.

MONDAY-FRIDAY: 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.

SATURDAY: 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (as needed)

Work is permitted underground 24/7.

Construction Update

Work Hours

• Concrete truck staging will continue between E. 74th and E. 76th Streets.

• Continue concrete pours at Ancillary 2 (northwest corner of E. 72nd Street and Second Avenue) and Entrance 3 (southeast corner of E. 72nd Street and Second Avenue).

• Continue utility relocation work for Entrance 1 construction within garage of 301 E. 69th Street and basement of 1322 Second Avenue.

• Station finishes contractor, Judlau, commences occupation and utilization of all work zones along alignment (E. 66th to E. 74th Streets).

• Reconfiguration of Ancillary 1 and Entrance 1 work zones to accommodate delivery, staging and storage of materials and equipment.

• As work zones along Second Avenue are reconfigured to allow for the Station Finishes contractor’s work activities and access, there may be additional changes to these work zones.

• Installation of waterproofing system, concrete flooring, and walls within Ancillary 1, Ancillary 2 and Entrance 3.

• Continue material deliveries and installation of temporary utilities within Ancillary 1.

• Continue installation of formwork for main cavern mezzanine slab and placement of reinforcing steel and concrete.

• Continue deliveries through Ancillary 2 and Entrance 3.
