Sealand (Principality of) Currency of Sealand: Sealand has minted coins intermittently since the early 1970s, although as with the Principality's stamps, few details are readily available, and it does not appear that any have been released in recent years. The unit of currency is the Sealand Dollar, which is maintained at parity with the US Dollar. Sealand has been the only new country project that has been the subject of an armed insurrection - and as such is the only new country project that boasts a coin mintage by the rebel government. As far as is known the Principality of Sealand has never produced banknotes. 1972 Princess Joan Sailing Vessel SLC 001 Year: 1972 Metal: .925 silver Condition: Proof Designer: Mint: Mintage: 2000 Diameter: 40.6 mm Denomination: $10 Edge Type: reeded 1975 Princess Joan Sealand Arms SLC 002 Year: 1975 Metal: Silver Condition: Proof Designer: Mint: Mintage: Diameter: mm Denomination: $20 Edge Type: 1977 Princess Joan Sealand Arms SLC 003A Year: 1977 Metal: .925 silver Condition: Proof Designer: Josef Baier Mint: Mintage: 2000 Diameter: 30.2 mm Denomination: $10 Edge Type: reeded Princess Joan Sealand Arms SLC 003B Year: 1977 Metal: .925 silver Condition: Proof Designer: Josef Baier Mint: Mintage: 25 ? Sealand(Principality of)
Currency of Sealand:
Sealand has minted coins intermittentlysince the early 1970s, although as withthe Principality's stamps, few details arereadily available, and it does not appearthat any have been released in recentyears. The unit of currency is the SealandDollar, which is maintained at parity withthe US Dollar. Sealand has been the onlynew country project that has been thesubject of an armed insurrection - and assuch is the only new country project thatboasts a coin mintage by the rebelgovernment. As far as is known thePrincipality of Sealand has neverproduced banknotes.
SLC 003B is differentiated from SLC 003C by the presence on the former of the 925inscription (referring to the coin's silver composition) directly below the shield on thereverse. It is unclear if the historical stated mintage of 25 pieces for the unreeded edgevariety of the 1977 Princess Joan $10 coin is for both varieties, or for each of them.
The origins of this mintage date to 1978, when Sealand's then Prime Minister,Professor Alexander G Achenbach and several associates abducted Prince Roy'sson, Michael, as part of an attempted armed takeover of Sealand. Prince Roy re-took Sealand in a helicopter-led assault and imprisoned Achenbach for severalweeks. Following his release Achenbach returned to Germany and established an"exile government" which he headed as "Chairman of the Privy Council". In August1979 he retired "due to health reasons", and annointed as his successor his Ministerfor Economic Co-operation - Johannes Seiger. Seiger continues to head the rebelgovernment to the present day with the titles of "Prime Minister and Head of thePrivy Council". This coin is believed to represent, uniquely, a mintage by a rebelgroup within a new country project.
SLC 007A differs from SLC 007B in metal composition, and in the format of theserial number inscribed on the panel beneath the Sealand Arms, which is numeric, and consists of four digits.
SLC 007B differs from SLC 007A in respect of metal composition and the format ofits inscribed serial number, which is alpha-numeric, consisting of the letters AGfollowed by three digits. The latter, along with a visible difference in the quality of thereflective recessed areas of the design also differentiates it from SLC 007C.
SLC 007C represents a special mintage of 500 pieces that was authorised by PrinceRoy for sale at the inaugural West Coast Expo, in the US state of California. Thisvariety is identifiable by its unique alpha-numeric serial number format - whichcommences with the letters WCE followed by three digits - and a visibly lesslustrous finish on the recessed areas of the design.
SLC 008D is the only known Sealand error coin. It was allegedly created when anumber of coins with a trial scalloped edge were minted, and then somehow becamemixed with a regular reeded edge batch. The coin is otherwise identical to SLC008A.
