Dear delegates of Scodra 2016,

It is a true privilege and pleasure to welcome all of you to the 9th National Selection Conference of EYP Albania - Scodra 2016! During 5 intense days, you will have the opportunity of participating in a programme that has been carefully put together to offer you an unforgettable and wide experience. From exploring Scodra and Velipoja’s beauty to sharing and debating ideas with others during Committee Work; from discussing the most pressing topics on the European agenda in the General Assembly to showing your artistic self during the Euroconcert; from writing and delivering passionate speeches in a podium to making friends that can last a lifetime, you can be sure that this event will have a deep impact on your life, in ways you might not even expect.

Scodra 2016 will revolve around the theme “Fostering a mutual understanding beyond borders”, which is an absolutely central idea in the world we live in today. As much as sovereignty is still deeply valued, no society or country is able or willing to stand and survive alone in an increasingly connected world. Every local action has the potential of having global repercussions, and the interconnections between policies, economies, cultures and people are progressively evident and inevitable. However, these do not always come together in the most positive of ways - misunderstanding and conflict inside and across borders are still a constant reality that impedes efforts towards a symbiotic relationship between all global actors, denying a peaceful and harmonious existence for many millions of human beings.

During this event, through the Committee Topics you can explore below, we will discuss how best to battle people smuggling and integrate refugees in societies; how to prevent pandemic diseases and support long-term humanitarian and development aid strategies; how to tackle tax evasion and promote efficient green renewable energy in our economies; and how to fight terrorist recruitment through the Internet and promote peacebuilding through art and education.

The Chairs’ Team of Scodra 2016 has been putting its enthusiasm into words, by compiling all their expertise into the Topic Overviews that you can find in this document. Their hard work and commitment has allowed them to write these highly informative overviews, that are meant to serve as the first step to your research and preparation for Scodra 2016. I urge you to carefully absorb the information that was compiled for you here and delve deeper into your own research before the session starts. The more you master your topic, the more you will feel comfortable and able to contribute to Committee Work and the General Assembly, by expressing, debating and defending your thoughts, opinions and ideas. Preparation is absolutely crucial, not just to capacitate you to discuss these important issues in depth, but also so you can better enjoy the event as a whole and seize every moment of it to the best of your abilities. It will be more than worth it, I can guarantee it!

I cannot wait to finally meet you in person already this month in Scodra and share this exciting adventure with all of you!

Until then, my warmest regards,

João Moreira, on behalf of Anastasia, David, Ekin, Ijon, Irida, Julian, Klara, Natallia, Stella and Veronica.
