– College of Science requirements

– Departmental (Major) requirements

Let’s Get Started…

Page 9: Science

• Strengthen critical thinking and communication skills

• Ensure basic understanding and appreciation of the sciences, arts and humanities, and social sciences

• Strengthen the international dimensions of the university’s curriculum

• Encourage interdisciplinary interaction among students and faculty

OSU Baccalaureate Core

Page 10: Science

• A broad education is critical to success in a changing world– Skills (primarily first year)– Perspectives (primarily lower division)– Difference, Power and Discrimination– Synthesis (upper division)

• Over 250 courses are available to meet Core requirements (pg. 26 Reg. Handbook)

OSU Baccalaureate Core

Page 11: Science

• Skills– Writing I– Writing II – Writing III/Speech– Fitness (Lec + Lab)– Math

• Perspectives (no more than 2 from same department)– Physical Science with Lab– Biological Science with Lab– Choice of physical or biological science with Lab– Western Culture– Cultural Diversity– Literature and Arts– Social Processes and Institutions– Difference, Power, and Discrimination

• Synthesis (not in the same department)– Science, technology and society– Contemporary global issues

• Writing Intensive Course (WIC)

Baccalaureate Core

One course in each category

Page 12: Science

• 12 credits of Math, Statistics or Computer Science

• 15 credits of Physical, Earth, and Biological Science (a 2 term sequence is required)

• Will be audited by the College of Science office for graduation

College of Science Requirements

Page 13: Science

• Specified by the Department

• Can “double count” with Bacc Core and College of Science requirements

• Will be audited by the Department for graduation

• Exceptions or substitutions must be granted by the Department

Departmental Requirements

Page 14: Science

• Math

• Chemistry

• Biology

• WR 121 or HHS 231 (+ HHS lab or PAC)

• Bacc Core courses or Foreign Language

• Orientation Courses

• Other (PAC, Music)

“Typical”First Year Schedule

Page 15: Science

• Math Placement is Important!• Courses for Science Majors:

– MTH 065 (Elementary Algebra)– MTH 095 or 103 (Intermediate Algebra)– MTH 111(College Algebra)– MTH 112 (Elementary Functions, i.e.

Trig)– MTH 251 (Differential Calculus)

• See page 20 for Math placement guidelines

Math Placement

Page 16: Science

• Your last math class in high school

• Your Math SAT score

• Your Math Placement Test score

• Your AP/IB score (if available)

Determines your math placement

Math Placement

Page 17: Science

• Will be offered this summer through E-campus

(Distance education).

• May be taken at a community college.

MTH 065 & 095

Page 18: Science

• Prepares students for MTH 111.

• Math placement score 11-16.

• A one term (10 week) investment to refresh your math skills for success in MTH 111.

MTH 103Algebraic Reasoning

Page 19: Science

• MTH 111 – College Algebra

• Students with a Math SAT < 540 and Math Placement Test < 17 had a failure rate of 49% in MTH 111.

• (Failure = D/F/U/W)

Don’t Over Place in Math

Page 20: Science

• See page 21 for Chemistry guidelines.• CH 221, 222, 223 (5 cr. each)

• Science majors sequence

• One year of high school chemistry

(with A or B) recommended

• Concurrent enrollment in MTH 111 or placement in higher math course

• CH 224H, 225H, 226H for Honors College

• (CH 201, 202 is for Engineers)

Chemistry Placement

Page 21: Science

• CH 121, 122, 123 (5 cr. each)

• For those with no high school chemistry & enrollment in MTH 095 or placement in a higher MTH course

• Pre-nursing students take CH 121, 122, 123 or 130

• Students placing in MTH 065 should DELAY Chemistry to winter term or next year

Chemistry Placement

Page 22: Science

• We WILL be offering CH 221 starting Winter Term

• For those that need math preparation before beginning Chemistry

• Example: take MTH 103 fall term

• Take CH 221 and MTH 111 winter term• Complete CH 222 spring term and take

CH 223 summer term to complete the series

Chemistry 221 “Trailer” Course

Page 23: Science

• English Composition = WR 121 (3 cr.)“Alpha” sectioned– A-G – fall– H-N – winter– O-Z – spring

• Lifetime Fitness = HHS 231 (2 cr.) PLUS lab HHS 241-248 (1 cr.) or PAC = 3 cr.

Classes required for all students:

Page 24: Science

• Two years of foreign language are required for admission if you graduated from high school in 1997 or later.

• If you do not meet this requirement, you must take 2 terms of the same language (e.g. SPAN 111 and 112) to graduate.

• Foreign Language placement test is

7:00 -8:30 AM in Kidder 33.

Foreign Language

Page 25: Science

• SPAN 111 & 211 are very likely full.• Options:

– Take Spanish via E-campus

– Take SPAN 101 & 201 at LBCC at the Benton Center in Corvallis

• Degree Partnership session & sign up for LBCC classes tomorrow:– Bexell 112A– 1:00-4:00 pm

Foreign Language

Page 26: Science

• BI 211, 212, 213 is for Science majors.

(BI 101, 102, 103 taken in high school does NOT meet BI 211, 212, 213 requirement for biological science majors.

• Additional Bacc Core course (may be specified by your major)

• Foreign Language (take placement test)– example: SPAN 111, 112, 113

Other Courses

Page 27: Science

• If you have AP/IB or transfer credit, mention this to your advisor.

• Provide unofficial transcripts (if possible) for your advisor. Official transcripts and score reports must be sent to Admissions.

• AP/IB equivalencies.

AP/IB and Transfer Credit

Page 28: Science

• ALS 199 – U Engage First Year Orientation• BB 111 - Biochemistry/Biophysics majors• BI 198 - Biology majors• ENSC 101 - Environmental Sci majors• EXSS 132 - Allied Health Professions• GS 199- Pre-nursing Orientation• MB 110 - Microbiology majors• VM 110 - Pre-vet Orientation• SED 407 - Pre-education - WINTER• BI 107 - Pre-dental – WINTER• BI 109 - Pre-medical - SPRING

Orientation Classes

Page 29: Science

• First Year Orientation

• Learn about OSU

• Make new friends

• Learn to navigate campus

• College is different from high school

• Ask questions

• Learn how to get involved

U Engage ALS 199 (2 cr.)

Page 30: Science

• MUS or MUP classes – Band, Choir, Orchestra, Music lessons – audition in Benton Hall

• ROTC – Air Force, Military Science, Naval Science

• PAC – Physical Activity Courses

Other 1-2 Credit Classes

Page 31: Science

• You need 12 credits to be full-time for financial aid, athletics, etc.

• You need to average 15 credits per term to graduate in 4 years

• 45 cr. = sophomore• 90 cr. = junior• 135 cr. = senior• 180 cr. = minimum number to GRADUATE• You need 60 credits of UPPER DIVISION (300

level and above)• Credits determine your registration priority!

Average Course Loads

Page 32: Science

• Full time load of 15 cr. = 45 hrs/week• Full time work = 40

hrs/week• Total = 85 hrs/week• Result:

– Low GPA– Low credit completed– Lost $– Suspension?

WORK LOAD MATTERS

Page 33: Science

• For each 10 hrs/week of work reduce course load by 3 cr.

– Working 20 hrs/week – take 12 cr.

– Working 30 hrs/week – take 9 cr.

– Working 40 hrs/week – take 6 cr.
