School of Media and Cultural Studies Class of 2020
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) was established in 1936 as the Sir Dorabji Tata Graduate School of Social Work. In 1944, it was renamed as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences. In 1964 it was declared Deemed to be a University under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act (UGC), 1956. Since its inception, the vision of the TISS has been to be an institution of excellence in higher education that continually responds to changing social realities through the development and application of knowledge, towards creating a people-centred, ecologically sustainable and just society that promotes and protects dignity, equality, social justice and human rights for all. In pursuance of its vision and guiding principles, the TISS organizes teaching programmes to facilitate the development of competent and committed professionals for practice, research and teaching; undertakes research, develops and disseminates knowledge and reaches out to the larger community through extension at the local, national, regional and international levels.
TATA INSTITUTEOF SOCIAL SCIENCES
THE SCHOOL OF MEDIA AND CULTURAL STUDIES
The School of Media and Cultural Studies, (SMCS), Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai is engaged in media teaching, production, research and dissemination. A unique feature of the School is its focus on creating synergies between theory and practice through its teaching programme, its web archives, field-based initiatives, films and research work. all of which are informed by a keen sense of connection with local subaltern cultures of resistance and invention. The School has been in existence in various avatars for the past 4 decades. It originated in a project for audiovisual documentation of innovative social initiatives in 1978 and became a permanent resource centre in 1983. After the re-structuring of TISS in 2006, the Unit for Media and Communication became the Centre of Media and Cultural Studies and upscaled its activities, with new teaching and outreach programmes, supported by a decade long grant from the Tata Trusts. In 2012, the Centre became a full-fledged School. The School comprises three centres.
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences, now in its 84th year, continues to impact social policies, programmes and ground level action for the betterment of society. As a community-engaged University with campuses in Mumbai, Tuljapur, Guwahati and Hyderabad, the Institute's vision is to create socially relevant knowledge and transfer that knowledge through its various teaching programmes and field action projects. With over eight decades of experience, the Institute creates highly knowledgeable and skilled human service professionals and empowers them to find sustainable solutions to people's problems, social issues and social transformation. The School of Media and Cultural Studies (SMCS), offers a unique and innovative Master’s Programme in Media and Cultural Studies. The students undergo two years of intensive education and skill building. The curriculum integrates theory with practice, with the students producing two documentaries, a PSA, and a music video, and a radio series along with a range of print and web journalistic pieces prior to graduation. Other skills imparted include visual and web design. The students also get a sound grounding in social sciences, cultural and media theory and research, with most of them also undertaking a dissertation. All students pursue an internship after their first year. In the past, several of our students have won awards for their documentary films and have gone on to excel in various fields, including filmmaking, print and web journalism, among others.
It gives me immense pleasure to present the 2018−2020 batch of 26 students of the M. A. Media and Cultural Studies of TISS, Mumbai through this Placement Brochure. I invite you to visit our campus, interact with our committed and sensitive students and discover their innovative ideas, commitment and enthusiasm in contributing and responding to social challenges. I am certain that our students will contribute immensely to your esteemed organisation, and become assets to you.
DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
Dr Shalini BharatDirector, TISS
DEAN’S MESSAGE
Dr Anjali MonteiroDean, SMCS
The Class of 2020 of the School of Media and Cultural Studies, who are currently seeking employment, are an intelligent, energetic, bright, socially sensitive and ethically sound group of young people who have been through two years of a rigorous programme, the MA in Media and Cultural Studies, that equips them to become ‘doing thinkers’ and ‘thinking doers’. The programme is an optimal blend of cultural/social theory and media practice that also gives students an opportunity to produce a range of relevant media outputs. The present class has made a series of powerful and thought-provoking Public Service Announcements entitled Stand with the Constitution. They have also made a series of music videos. Other media outputs include a set of short documentaries entitled Transforming our Lives that looks at grassroots women leaders in the M (East) ward of Mumbai and their contribution to social change. This series has been supported by the GenUrb project involving a consortium of 6 Universities across the world and has been made collaboration with CORO, Udaan, the M Ward Project of TISS, and some campaigns. Working in groups over five weeks, the students produced a series of radio magazine shows comprising programmes on themes as varied as satire, political commentary, narratives of marginalised communities, and poetry. As a part of courses in journalism, keeping contemporary online news ecosystem in mind, the students wrote reported and opinion pieces, as well as produced multimedia material on a range of issues in the city. The students are also in the process of making a set of longer documentaries, which they will complete by March 2020. Over the years, the student films produced by the students of SMCS have won several awards and accolades and have been screened at film festivals in India and overseas, as well as been shown on the NDTV documentary slot. They are also distributed for non-broadcast screenings. In addition to producing engaging and excellent media products, the students also work on a dissertation, present papers in an annual graduate seminar and produce many thought-provoking essays and written pieces, some of which find their way into SubVersions (http://subversions.tiss.edu), our online peer reviewed journal for early career researchers in Media and Cultural Studies. In addition to this the students are also involved in co-curricular activities such as organizing the Cut.in — National Students Film Festival, which is the first of its kind in India that has been held regularly since 2008 and Frames of Reference, a national level seminar for post-graduate and doctoral scholars. Adda, the SMCS Film Club and Culture Café are forums that the students coordinate and participate in. Conceiving, planning and organizing these various activities gives our students both organizational skills and valuable experience in completing tasks competently and efficiently. With such a rich and wide set of academic and creative achievements that contribute to public discourse, the students of the class of 2020 will be a valuable addition to any organization. The unique combination of theory and practice that the programme offers makes them eminently suited to any placement that requires both conceptual and creative skill sets.

Studying anthropology has been a major part of my learning especially in terms of developing a social
conscience.Further, its interaction with media studies has made me discover the various underlying opportunities in
the sea of expression. I have personally developed keen interest in Film
Production and would like to work at Film and Media Production Houses for my further growth in the field. I enjoy working with individuals/collectives on film
media projects (either short term or long term) and I am looking forward to develop my skills more in the coming
time.
