Multicultural Perspectives
Public Speaking Competition
During Week 5 some of our Stage 2 students
participated courageously in the Multicultural
Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. They
covered a range of topics from Refugees to
Racism, from Kid Power to What Makes an
Australian.
The competition encourages students to explore
the topic of multiculturalism, whilst giving them an
opportunity to develop their public speaking skills
and improve their confidence along the way.
Students presented both a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. The judging proved difficult with
many students performing at a very high level. There could only be one winner per grade on the day.
Congratulations to Hayley Van Der Meer of 3D and Dallyce Rose of 4HW who will now go on to represent
BEPS at the local area final on Tuesday, 3rd July.

On the 31st of May, two debating teams
travelled to Springwood Public School for
Round 1 of the Premier’s Debating
Challenge. The A team, Lara
Schuetrumpf, Banjo Tucker, Emily
Kirkpatrick and Hunter Kelly, debated first
against Springwood Red, with the topic
that ‘only feedback should be given to
students instead of grades and marks’.
Both teams spoke extremely well, and it
was a tight win for BEPS! The second
debate was the B Team, Emma Garvey,
Hannah Moss, Ella West and Louise Viney, against Springwood Blue, with the topic that ‘everyone must
attend separate gender schools’. The B
Team was on the affirmative side and after
lots of great arguments and rebuttals,
Springwood Blue came out on top.
Everyone was amazing and showed great
core values, many thanks to Miss Dub for
training us and taking us out on these
debates, we had so much fun and can't
wait for the next one.

Thursday morning was just like any other.
Until around fifty students from Blaxland
East Public realised that yes, they did
have to get out of bed early and change
into shorts and t-shirts. But soon excite-
ment replaced weary groans. The bus was
heading to Jamisontown for the Winmalee
Cup.
It was a long but terrific day for both the
netballers and the soccer players thanks
to the organisation of Miss Thomas and
the help from Mr Good, Mrs Falzon, Miss Addison and Mrs Watson.
Every student from BEPS displayed phenomenal sportsmanship and core values throughout the entire
day, even stopping to pick up rubbish at the end.
Then, when the time came for the presentation ceremony the Senior and Junior Boys Soccer teams were
both presented with medals—for they had won the Winmalee Cup!
As well as that, the netball teams came second and third. Finally, the non-competitive soccer team won
most of their games and most importantly, everyone had a spectacular time.

On the 14th of June the Senior and Junior netball teams went off to Jamison Park to play 5 games of
netball. When they got there, they warmed up and stretched. Both Junior and Senior teams were super
pumped. Senior won 2 games and finished 3rd overall. Juniors won 3 games, lost one and drew one,
finishing 2nd
overall. The girls played with a smile. Everyone had heaps of fun and behaved very well.

We’d like to say a very big thank you to the whole BEPS community – the students, teachers and parents.
We were overwhelmed by the support shown to Isla at the recent “Go The Blues” mufti day. The financial
support is greatly appreciated, as are the continuing words of encouragement she has received from
everyone. She is looking forward to swimming at the Nationals Championships in 6 weeks time.
We’re very proud of her hard work and achievements, but we are even more proud and happy to be part
of such a fantastic school community.
Many thanks,
Anil, Michelle and Isla Puri
On Friday the 8th of June, Blaxland East held a fundraiser day for Isla where we all wore blue to
represent NSW. Every student who wore blue made a gold coin donation and there was also the option
of purchasing raffle tickets. Due to the generosity of our beautiful community, we raised over $1100 to
go towards Isla’s trip to Tasmania. She will be representing NSW for swimming at a National level
during the first week of Term 3. We wish her all the very best and GOOD LUCK ISLA!!!
Page 7
On Wednesday 13th June, 12 students from Blaxland East went to the Regional Cross Country Carnival at
Eastern Creek Raceway. The students had a terrific day, running hard and pushing themselves to their
limits. Congratulations to the following students who now go on to the NSW All Schools Cross Country
Carnival at Eastern Creek Raceway first week back next term: Deanna Drake, Ellis Haydon, Isla Puri,
Virginia Cole and Will Haydon. We wish you the very best of luck!

BEPS dancers did our school proud on Tuesday when they auditioned for the Blue Mountains Nepean
Dance Festival. Three members from the selection panel visited our school to watch each of the five
dance groups perform.
The visitors were most impressed with the progress each group has made and it was wonderful news to
find out that all groups were successful in their audition and will go on to perform at the Joan Sutherland
Centre in early September.
It is exciting that this year Mrs Przydacz has formed a Stage One mixed dance group and together with
Mrs Shandler's groups there will now be over 120 students representing BEPS at the Festival.
Well done dancers!

On the 4th of June the Senior Boys and Girls basketball teams went to Hazelbrook Public School to play
their very first round of knockout basketball. Both teams were extremely excited and a little bit nervous to
verse them. When they got there, they changed into their jerseys and warmed up ready for the game. The
boys played first and won 27-10. After that the girls played and also won, 32-8. Everyone had a great day
and can’t wait for their next game.

On Thursday 14th June 2018, I was honoured to take
18 Year 5 and 6 students to compete in the AFL’s
2018 Tony Lockett Shield Knockout at Blacktown
International Sports Stadium in Rooty Hill. On a
beautiful sunny windy day Blaxland East Public
School was courageously represented by a team of
14 boys and 4 girls. The students showed bravery,
enthusiasm, passion and spirit in competing in two
games to reach the semi-final and play the
tournament winners. The quality of skills was quoted
as being as good as the District level games.
Their first game was against Crestwood Public
School who started off with three quick goals to lead
by 18 points after 5 minutes. Our team rallied with
some determined efforts from Angus Warburton,
Hunter Kelly, Claire Nicholls, Larissa Niklaus and
Sam O’Connor to control the opposition and restrict
their progress. A couple of behinds quickly after half
time got the team back into the contest. Attacking
raids from Jesse Shandler, Ryley King and Tavila
Gibson-Lelilio resulted in us bagging a goal through
Alex Williams and finish the game winning the second half 8 to 1. Crestwood 19 (2 goals, 1 behind) to
Blaxland East 8 (1 goal, 2 behinds).
The second game against Crawford Public School saw the opposition score and lead by 6 points. Our
courageous team rallied again and took control of the game through some constructive passages of play.
Hunter Kelly, Sam O’Connor,
Ryley King, Angus Warburton
and Rory Jenner worked
tirelessly throughout the centre
and were supported by some
great defence by Riley
O’Donohue, Isabelle Baldock,
Zeke Turnbull,
(Continued on page 10)
Page 10
Rory Jenner, Tom Sach, Liam Griffiths and Imogen
Handley. Through individual brilliance from Jesse
Shandler, Ryley King, Alex Williams and Kieran
Thomson and some great marks taken by Claire
Nicholls, Zeke Turnbull, Alex Williams, Jarred
Drake and Kieran Thomson we controlled the play.
We took the advantage and kicked 4 goals through
Alex Williams, Jarred Drake, Ryley King and Kieran
Thomson to win the game. Blaxland East - 24 (4
goals) to Crawford 6 (1 goal).
The team came second in pool A and faced the first placed favourites from pool B Kings Langley. The
semi-final was played on the second field which was more exposed to the wind making their challenge
more difficult. The Team
made a gallant effort with
some outstanding defensive
efforts by Tavila Gibson-
Lelilio, Tom Sach, Liam
Griffiths, Larissa Niklaus, Rory
Jenner and Ryley King.
Hunter Kelly once again
worked tirelessly in the centre
with Angus Warburton, Rory Jenner and Sam O’Connor, but they were outclassed by a quicker more agile
opponent who dominated the game from start to finish to win. Kings Langley 54 (8 goals 6 behinds) to
Blaxland East 0.

I had a wonderful day in watching you all take the field with high spirits, happiness and determination to
succeed. You never took a backward step and showed the true spirit of never giving up. I am so proud of
the commitment from all the students as they displayed the Core Values of Blaxland East Public School in
every game. I would also like to sincerely thank Mrs Jenner, Mr Sach, Mr King, Mr Shandler, Mrs Lelilio-
Gibson, Mrs Nicholls, Mr O’Connor and Angus’s Grandparents for their support and help in getting the
team to and from the venue. Well done and thank you.

Congratulations to the 80 Stage 2 and 3 students who participated
courageously in Round 1 of the Premier’s Spelling Bee this week.
Stay tuned to find out which super spellers have made it through to Round 2.

Hello everyone and happy Week 8! I’ll begin with an update on Mrs Bryan. Last week Kerry had surgery on her foot
and after a few nights in hospital she has returned home and is making a steady recovery. I’m sure she is missing
everybody but enjoying the chance to sleep in on these chilly winter mornings. Mrs Bryan will return to work at the
beginning of Term 3.
Teachers have been busily writing half yearly reports, which will be sent home at the end of term. Parent Teacher
Interviews will take place during the first week back next term. Interviews will be held over three days, from the 24-
26th July. A note will be sent home with your child’s report, detailing how to book your appointment online.
Fete preparations are coming along nicely and we are grateful to the fete committee for the time and effort they are
putting into organising yet another fabulous, fun day for our families and the wider community. All day ride passes
are now on sale at a discounted early bird rate and we have more donation days coming up soon. Keep your ears
and eyes peeled for more information about these events.
Being a school of opportunity, we’ve had so many extra-curricular activities over the past two weeks; ICAS tests,
AFL gala day, the Winmalee Cup, the Spelling Bee, the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition,
debating competition, Dance Festival auditions, the commencement of Stage 1 dance group, soccer and basketball
knock-out games, as well as the Regional Cross Country Carnival.
Amongst all the extra-curricular activities, students have also been engaged in their core business of learning. Here
is a little tiny insight into just what everyone has been up to in class…
Kindergarten have been learning how to subtract
Year 1 have been studying light and sound
Year 2 can now tell you all about persuasive writing
Year 3 have been learning how to multiply and divide
Year 4 can explain convection, conduction and radiation
Up in Stage 3, Year 5 have been learning how to add fractions and
Year 6 are learning to use sizzling starts in their Writing
Keep up the good work everyone!
Before I sign off, I’d like to extend my thanks to Mrs Graham for teaching 3D whilst
I’m in the office and to Mrs Bryan for trusting me in the “hot seat” whilst she is on
leave. Last, but not least, thank you to all our dedicated and diligent staff for their
support and for their tireless effort to provide amazing opportunities for the students
of BEPS!

Busy bees in the garden this winter, no slow season for us! Our Garden Friends Club meet on the 2nd
Tuesday of the month to chat, plant and maintain the patch. As you can see, the mulch pile has been
relocated as the paths were finished off.
With some soil delivered thanks to Lower Mountains Landscape Supplies, we have been able to start the
process of getting pots ready for the Fete. With some team work and muscle power, we have filled the
potting bays ready! We would love your help potting some plants ready for the plant stall. We are also in
need of some pot donations for the Fete (terracotta or plastic, tea cups or jars). We will have a donation
box near the garden for easy drop off.
We have had some visitors in the garden from KC, helping mix some mud pies and moving the soil to
potting bays. They had a blast exploring the gardening, watering the plants and trying some fresh herbs
and edible flowers. Our power team from 3-6T set up a new patch with the help of Mr Healey as well as a
greenhouse to grow plants for the fete and enjoy the growing experience.
Thank you to the compost team for collecting the crunch and sip scraps and creating awesome compost!
Thank you to all the families and students for recycling their canteen plastic bottles and from home, we
have been able to purchase many seedlings for our garden. What a great way to grow food for free! We
appreciate your support.
With spring planning starting
soon, we would love your ideas
for edible plants and favourite
herbs and vegies your family
likes to eat.
Drop us a note at the office or
via Facebook P&C page.

We are writing to you as a School Bus provider to and from your School with some concerns regarding the
current use of Student Opal Cards.
One of the more significant changes created by the recent introduction of the Student Opal Card is the
requirement for students to ‘tap on’ and ‘tap off’ when travelling to and from school on any school bus
boarded in the course of their journey.
Opal data gathered by ‘tap on’ and ‘tap off’ is used to determine demand for bus services. If students
don’t ‘tap on’ and ‘tap off’, lack of perceived patronage could lead to a review of the level of services pro-
vided to your school.
With this in mind, we seek your assistance in reminding your students that tapping on and tapping off
correctly is one of the conditions of using the Student Opal Card.
Transport for NSW also produces the “Code of Conduction for School Students on Buses” that can be
used as a reference tool and mechanism for continued education about the importance of student behav-
ior and safety on buses. Please click here for more information.
Thank you in advance for your assistance and please contact us if you have any questions about any is-
sues contained in this letter.
