For more than 68 years, The Spartanburg County Foundation has been committed to improving the lives of Spartanburg County residents by promoting philanthropy and encouraging community engagement. The Foundation has evolved over the years to meet the ever-changing needs of the community, moving away from serving only as a traditional grantmaker to embracing its role as a community leader. Because of its proven track record and willingness to assume responsibility, The Spartanburg County Foundation is looked upon more and more to lead.

The 2011 report, Living a Legacy. Leaving a Footprint., illustrates the many ways in which the Foundation is assisting citizens of this community in achieving their charitable goals, as well as the many ways in which the Foundation is working strategically to improve Spartanburg County by providing community leadership.

These volatile economic times present the Foundation with a very unique opportunity to use its collective resources – grantmaking, community engagement, initiatives and partnerships, and knowledge – to meet community needs. This is why programs such as Donor Connect and Nonprofit Connect have been developed, and why the Foundation staff and trustees are continually looking for innovative ways to leverage Foundation dollars to achieve maximum impact.

We acknowledge that the Foundation’s leadership role in the community would not be possible without the extraordinary generosity and foresight of our donors, both past and present. For that, we are truly thankful.

Together, we are living out a legacy of leadership and leaving lasting footprints for future generations.

LIVING A LEGACYOpening Doors for the Future

“I want to leave some little part of the world better,” said Gail Swofford Hackett. “Most importantly, I want to help somebody in the same way that the scholarship I received helped me.” That’s what Gail had in mind when she established The Gail Swofford Hackett Scholarship Fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation in 2011.

Inspired by her teachers and her father who always called her his ‘little school teacher,’ Gail knew from a very young age that she wanted to be a teacher. A scholarship that she received

on graduation night provided her with the exact amount that she needed to attend Winthrop University and fulfill her dream.

Gail spent 33 years teaching in schools throughout South Carolina and in Connecticut before retiring in 2001 and returning to Spartanburg. She and her husband, Linwood, had always known about the Foundation and decided a long time ago that they wanted to give back in the form of a scholarship. “The Spartanburg County Foundation was a natural fit,” said Gail. “They made it very easy.”

Valerie Douglas, a past Foundation scholarship recipient,

now teaches at James F. Byrnes High School.

Valerie graduated from Wofford College in 2009, and immediately accepted a position at Byrnes High School where she teaches English and journalism. She continues to give back, not only through teaching, but through her volunteer involvement both at the school and in the community. “Being able to stay in the community and learn that lesson from the Foundation of giving back has been very beneficial,” said Douglas. “The Foundation does a wonderful job and I am very grateful.”

LEAVING A FOOTPRINT

The Foundation has worked alongside many donors, like Gail, to establish a total of 226 scholarship funds, and in 2011, awarded 455 scholarships, totaling over $585,000, to individuals whom, in many cases, would not otherwise be able to attend college.

In addition to setting up funds with donors, the Foundation has a Scholarship Program that provides four-year scholarships for Spartanburg County graduates to attend institutions of higher learning.

Valerie Douglas, a graduate of James F. Byrnes High School, received a Foundation scholarship. “The Foundation’s scholarship enabled me to attend Wofford, which was my first choice,” she said.

“Because God has richly blessed my life, my desire is to honor Him by helping others. I want to leave a little part of this world better by giving back to my community.”

-Gail Swofford Hackett

Page 6: SCF Annual Report 2011

Greg and Liberty Canzater have always had a personal mission to help people. When they learned that they could do so by setting up a fund at the Foundation with a planned gift, they felt that it was a win-win.

“Honestly, we had never thought about giving in this capacity, but it allowed us flexibility and the resources to do it,” said Greg. “A common misconception is that you have to have a lot of money to set up a fund, but that’s not true. A planned gift is economical and affordable for everyone.”

“This opportunity has impacted me in so many ways. I started off with nothing, but when I came out of the Program, I had my wings.”

-Marcella Bland

LEAVING A FOOTPRINT

Marcella Bland serves lunch to a group of kindergarteners

at Jesse S. Bobo Elementary.

Last August, the couple established the Greg and Liberty Canzater Fund, which will be funded through a life insurance policy upon Liberty’s passing. The Fund will benefit The Butterfly Foundation, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower, transform, and transition the lives of economically challenged individuals and families in order to help them become self-sufficient and self-confident citizens of Spartanburg County.

“Whether I am here or not, I believe in the mission of The Butterfly Foundation and I want the people that are working there to be able to still provide the services that are critical to this community,” said Liberty.

Marcella Bland, a single mother of four, is one such individual who has already been impacted by the Organization. “Before I was accepted into the Culinary Job Training Program, I did not know what to do or which way I wanted my life to go,” said Marcella. “I was going to school and trying to keep the kids on track, but I really had no direction.”

Marcella graduated from the Culinary Job Training Program in August 2011, and was immediately hired by Sodexo to provide meals to the students of Jesse S. Bobo Elementary.

“This opportunity has impacted me in so many ways,” she said. “I started off with nothing, but when I came out of the Program, I had my wings.”

When Tom and Ceci Arthur first established the Thomas and Cecilia Arthur Family Fund in 1995, they knew that they wanted to give back but had no idea that giving would be so easy.

“We first learned about the Foundation in 1994,” recalls Ceci. “Ironically, someone we knew had passed away and the family asked that gifts be made to

the Foundation in lieu of flowers. We made a donation and received an annual report the following year.” Seeing

had established funds with the Foundation prompted them to open a donor advised fund.

As a successful small business owner, Tom has found the flexibility of a donor advised fund especially beneficial. “The Fund enables us to continue doing charitable giving despite the economy or business outlook for the year,” said Tom. “Additionally, as any small business owner understands, the timing of a deduction is very important.” The couple is able to contribute to the Fund when they are able, take advantage of the tax deductions and make impactful gifts.

While there are other options available, the Arthurs believe that giving through a community foundation is the right choice. “Sure, other companies allow you to set up similar types of funds, but they don’t have the local expertise regarding the needs in the community,” said Tom. “The Spartanburg County Foundation does a fabulous job of knowing where the needs are and working alongside donors to help them achieve maximum impact.”

Last year, the Foundation’s 124 donor advised funds distributed almost $1.1 million in grants to a variety of causes. Mobile Meals of Spartanburg is one organization that benefited from the generosity of grants made by multiple donor advised fundholders.

“These gifts tremendously impacted the day-to-day work of our organization,” said Jayne McQueen, president and CEO of Mobile Meals of Spartanburg. “They played a crucial role in feeding those who were hungry in Spartanburg County.” Last year, Mobile Meals provided 360,000 nutritious meals to 2,300 homebound individuals throughout the county.

“Spartanburg has been very good to us. As we are able, we give back to the community that we have been fortunate enough to live in all these years. Giving through our fund is a part of that.”

“I believe in tomorrow,” said Ken Couch, RPh, president of the J M Smith Corporation. “The only way to make tomorrow a success and make it different from yesterday is through education.”

Last year, the J M Smith Foundation established The J M Smith Foundation, Inc. Trustee Initiated Fund at The Spartanburg County Foundation, which was set up for The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Board of Trustees to make discretionary grants in the area of education.

“After meeting with The Spartanburg County Foundation and better understanding its philosophies, we felt that this was the best investment we could make that would accentuate those opportunities for tomorrow.”

As a community leader, Ken understands the importance of charitable impact. “A lot of us have that great idea of what we would like to support,” said Ken. “However, a group of trustees, such as The Spartanburg County Foundation’s Board

of Trustees, have a better perspective of what is going to have the greatest impact in our community.”

For many years, The Spartanburg County Foundation has been working with individuals and corporations to establish unrestricted funds or give directly to the Community Fund.

“Unrestricted contributions enable the Foundation’s Trustees to strategically address issues that are facing our community,” said Tommy Young, chairman of the Foundation’s Board of Trustees.

One example can be found in the implementation of The 40/30 Challenge and establishment of the College Hub. This journey of convening and strategic planning around educational attainment provided the Foundation an opportunity to exercise its leadership. Last year, in addition to its initial investment of over $200,000 in staff time and financial support, the Foundation presented a $500,000 lead challenge grant to the College Hub as seed funding in a continued effort to show support and further promote sustainability.

“It is important to not only look at the immediate impact, but to understand how our actions today will directly affect those who come after us,” said Young. “Essentially, unrestricted giving is an opportunity for the entire community to collectively contribute so that the philanthropic footprint that we leave can be seen for many generations to come.”

LIVING A LEGACY OF LEADERSHIP

11 | THE SPARTANBURG COUNTY FOUNDATION n 2011 ANNUAL REPORT

For nearly a century, community foundations have played a vital role in advancing the communities that they serve by developing innovative ways to meet critical needs, and engaging individuals and groups to take action. As the oldest community foundation in South Carolina, The Spartanburg County Foundation is no exception.

Despite challenges such as limited community resources and ever-increasing needs, the Foundation is utilizing its leadership and collective resources to address these issues through grantmaking, community engagement, initiatives, and by serving as a knowledge source.

GRANTMAKINGGrantmaking is a very important way in which the Foundation continues to improve Spartanburg County. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees awards discretionary grants through the Community Fund to further these efforts. Last year, the Foundation awarded more than $500,000 in discretionary grants from the Community Fund and provided hundreds of hours of technical assistance.

“The support that the Foundation provides is a direct reflection of its commitment to the health

and well-being of our community,” said KathleenCates, executive director of Healthy Smiles of Spartanburg. Healthy Smiles was 1 of 13 organizations that was awarded a grant through the Foundation’s Competitive Grant Cycle. With the $10,000 grant they received, Healthy Smiles expanded their screening program and increased the number of adolescents seen in the free clinic by 18.4 percent.

Healthy Smiles was also selected by area clergy as the beneficiary of the Spartanburg Community Thanksgiving Service offering, and with the Foundation’s $5,000 match, was presented with $12,043.90.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTThe Foundation engages the community at all levels – fostering partnerships with municipal leaders to build awareness of specific needs, working with community leaders to address issues, and connecting with citizens to encourage individuals to take an active role in identifying long-term solutions to meet community needs.

“The Foundation does a wonderful job of engaging citizens around real needs and working toward improving Spartanburg County,” said Mayor Elaine Harris of Pacolet. Last year, the Foundation began hosting a series of town hall meetings throughout the county to inspire citizens to take action in their own communities.

“What a great opportunity the Foundation provides by reaching out to all areas of Spartanburg County to share the broader vision of how we can all work together,” she said. “It demonstrates the true commitment of the Foundation.”

INITIATIVESThe Foundation manages several initiatives to meet community needs. Women Giving for Spartanburg (WGFS) is one such initiative that is empowering women to be leaders in philanthropy. Last year, WGFS implemented an online grant application system and launched a junior member program to engage women, ages 21-35 years. Despite a sluggish economy, WGFS added 55 new members, bringing their total membership to 256.

“By encouraging women’s philanthropy at all ages, it becomes a model for our children and grandchildren,” said Susan Oldham, chairwoman of WGFS.

In 2011, Healthy Smiles provided dental screenings to 19,237 children in all Spartanburg County School Districts and increased the number of adolescents seen in the free clinic by 18.4 percent.

Other Foundation initiatives include Citizens Scho la rs , the Grass roots Leadersh ip Development Institute, and the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project.

Started in 1989 by John Wardlaw, the Indicators Project is now a partnership between the Foundation, United Way of the Piedmont, Spartanburg County Government, and USC Upstate.

“Community Indicators has proven invaluable in so many ways – as a reference, report card, educational tool, and grant writing resource,” said Chris Steed, president and CEO of the United Way of the Piedmont and chair of the advisory cabinet.

Last year, the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project produced a dashboard report regarding health in Spartanburg County, conducted a study to assess the nonprofit infrastructure, and hosted several community engagement sessions on the topics of health and education.

KNOWLEDGE SOURCEIn keeping current with community needs as well as national trends, the Foundation serves the community by offering a non-bias approach to knowledge-sharing, serving as a resource to the community-at-large, donors and nonprofit organizations.

One example of this includes the work that the Foundation is doing to build the capacity

Page 15: SCF Annual Report 2011

In 2011, the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project held several informational sessions to encourage community engagement and foster improvement.

of nonprofit organizations. Last year, upon the release of the nonprofit infrastructure study which was commissioned by the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project, the Foundation held several listening sessions to further identify the strengths, capacity needs and challenges facing the nonprofit organizations that serve Spartanburg County. Additionally, the Foundation launched Nonprofit Connect as a way in which to continue to stay connected to the ongoing needs of nonprofit organizations and to equip nonprofit executives and board members with the tools they need to further their organizations.

Marilyn Sykes, director of the Woodruff Community Center, attended four of the five

sessions that were held last year. “Nonprofit Connect has been instrumental in helping me direct the Center and advance our mission,” said Sykes. “It has really opened a door for us.”

After attending the November session, Sykes was contacted by a representative from BMW, and the Woodruff Community Center was awarded a $3,000 grant. “Nonprofit Connect helped us build a relationship with a funder in this community, and for that, we are truly grateful.”
