-- Living Legend

SATISH GUJRALBORN :25 DECEMBER 1925 (AGE 90) Jhelum, PunjabNATIONALITY: IndianEDUCATION: MumbaiKNOWN FOR: Painting, Sculpting, Muralist, Architect, Writer, & Graphic Designer .SPOUSE: KiranSatish Gujral published 4 books including an autobiography.

Early lifeSatish Gujral was born in JHELUM, PUNJAB . At the age of 8, a sickness resulted in impairment of hearing. He lost his brother RAJ in the mishap.May be it is the perpetual silence that surrounded him that helped him to discover the artistic talent in him.During his early years of sickness, entombed in silence, as he said, he read Urdu literature and went on doodling with a pencil on a paper.

Education/ originationIn 1939 he joined MAYO SCHOOL OF ARTS in Lahore to study applied arts and mastered stone and wood carving , clay modeling, scale drawing, design, etc. 3 years before the partition of India, In 1944 he moved to Bombay and enrolled in SIR JJ SCHOOL OF ART for diploma in fine arts and to became a member of Progressive artists group (PAG) which includes S.H. Raza, EN. Souza, P.N. Mago, M.F. Hussain and many others. In 1947 due to recurring sickness he was forced to drop out of school and leave Bombay. In 1952 he got a scholarship to study at PALACIO NATIONAL DE BELLES ARTES, MEXICO.

Transformation in medium The social content dominated his paintings and graphics, and the anguish of the nations who lost their homes and families during the partition of the country came out in anger, sweeping gestural brushwork in his paintings. His search was on for what was living and life-giving in the traditional arts and crafts of India, and he diversified his sculpture materials with machined industrial objects in steel, copper, glass, often painted in strong enamel colors.Later he tried out the junk sculptures, introducing light and sound in them.

Since the late 80s up to the recent years, Satish Gujrals paintings and sculptures further diversified both in terms of material and content.Satish Gujrals sculptures in burnt wood have came with a kind of visceral exposure of forms, human and otherwise. He executed commissions to make large murals, mostly in mosaic and ceramic tiles and later in machined steel elements, simulated his interest in their immediate architectural context.TRANSFORMATIONSculptures in burnt woodlarge murals, mostly in mosaic and ceramic tiles & later in machined steel elementsarchitectural context

worksThe partition of India and the associated agony of the immigrants impacted a young Satish which manifested itself in the art works he created later. architectureBELGIAN EMBASSY, new delhiIn 2000, the building was recognised as one of the 1000 best buildings in the 19th century.Features : Multi dome, Arches, Brick, WatershedThe building is constructed with red bricks. The entrance opens into a courtyard with stone masonary and greenery within.

It is a sculpture form, specially from the outside. Moving inside is like moving through sculpted spaces.

Here in lies the problem. Probably after having conceived of the form, Gujral didnt want to compromise with it and was therefore not able to plan the openings, windows and doors, he clarifies adding We architects feel that form of the building should emerge form the foundations and function rather then vice versa.
