ABOUT SURVIVAL SKILLS SURVIVAL SKILLS are techniques a

person may use in a dangerous situation to save themselves or others. These techniques are meant to provide basic necessities for human life.

Page 3: P1 Manisha

SHELTERSHELTER is mainly for protection and

comfort. Our shelter should be able to protect us from Heat,Rain,Sun and any weather around us.Our shelter should be fairly resistant to all these conditions

BASIC NECESSITIES-FOOD,WATER,SHELTER , FIRST AID AND FIRE.

Page 4: P1 Manisha

FOOD AND WATER. WATER:-IN colder or warmer temperatures the

need of water is greater. A typical person looses 4litres of water under normal conditions. Lack of water may cause dehydration and effects the concentration levels. A person should always carry a water bottle for surviving the disasters when occurred.

FOOD:-Plant products are the easiest Food sources found in forests. During Disasters , people should pack all the Edible food items with them like biscuitfruits, etc.

FIRE Making fire is recognized in the sources

as to significantly increase the ability to survive physically and mentally. Producing fire under adverse conditions has been made much easier by introduction of tools like fire piston.

The Heat provided by the fire warms the Body, Dries wet Leaves, Disinfects water and cooks food.

FIRST AID First aid can help a person survive and

function with injuries and illness that would otherwise kill or incapacitate a person. Common injuries include:-

Bites or strings of venomous animals like Snakes, Scorpions etc.

Infection through food etc Born Fractures, Sprains, Burns etc. THE survivor should posses the required

knowledge of all the items of the kit

SURVIVAL IN URBAN AND RURAL ENVIRONMENT

URBAN ENVIRONMENT:-Urban survival inputs also includes Food, Shelter, Sanitation, First aid, Communication, Security, Self Defense, Reference guides , Light etc

Light and communication:-urban survival supplies includes the main forms of

Light and communication. We Must keep a torchlight, Oil lamps,Radio alarm cell phone chargers,Lighters etc SELF DEFENCE:-Surviving in a Urban setting depends more on our Skills and knowledge.

SURVIVAL IN RURAL ENVIRONMENT

Living and working in a rural setting is quite different from urban environment. Travel in remote or rural areas is a major concern.

If your role involves the provision of outreach services or travelling, find out if your organisation has policies or guidelines for safe travel or visiting. If you are moving to an unfamiliar environment take the time to develop some local knowledge. Find out about the weather, geography, safe practice protocols, and any other safety issues. If we are travelling outside the community: get good directions, take a map, find out what emergency procedures are in place, and check weather conditions. We must make sure that we take the appropriate equipment: water, emergency contact details, a satellite phone if available, spare tier. Don't be blasé about your safety, don't take unnecessary risks or be caught unprepared.

1) TYPES OF DISASTERS NATURAL DISASTERS:-There are many

natural Disasters like Tsunami Floods Earthquakes Volcanic eruptions Cyclones Avalanches

2.MAN-MADE DISASTER Nuclear disasters Drought Environmental disasters Wars Terrorist incidents etc

OCCURRENCE OF NUMEROUS DISASTERS

The occurrence of numerous disasters nowadays has caused a lot of concerned individuals all around the world. Though These cannot be prevented but few tips can be followed:-

TIPS FOR SURVIVAL In order to survive the calamities the person should be

prepared with all the basic necessities like Water, Food, First Aid, Communication, Light etc

We should keep in touch with our relatives and family members through phones etc

Keep a radio for safety and the most important thing is first aid. Through this radio we can listen for further instructions during an emergency.

There should be cash available with us during such situations

SURVIVING THE MANMADE AND NATURAL DISASTERS. IF TSUNAMI OCCURS:-1. Under no circumstances should we go near

the coast to see the tsunami hit.2. We must be aware of risks such as

hypothermia. We must always stay indoors and take protective steps.

o IF FLOODS OCCUR:-1. Avoid electricity sources2. Put flood protection equipment in place.o IF EARTHQUAKE OCCUR:-1. Hide under the bed or shelves attached to

walls.2. Do not hide under electric poles and tall tress

Page 13: P1 Manisha

IF CYCLONE OCCURRED:-1)Find out if our home is located in the

cyclone prone area and evacuates from that place.

2)Be prepared with all the aminities to fight the disasters.

IF NUCLEAR DISASTERS TAKES PLACE:-Secure food Supplies, Water and Shelter.

First aid can help a person survive and function with injuries and illnesses that would otherwise kill or incapacitate him/her .

THE COMMON FIRST AIDS ARE DONE FOR:

• BREATHING PROBLEMS• Severe bleeding• Snake bites

FIRST AID

Page 16: P1 Manisha

OPEN AIRWAY METHOD: for breathing problems caused due to Face or neck injuries.

Inflammation and swelling of mouth and throat caused by inhaling smoke, flames, and irritating vapours or by an allergic reaction.

LIFE SAVING STEPS

• With the victim’s airway open, pinch his nose closed with your thumb and forefinger and blow two complete breaths into his lungs

Page 17: P1 Manisha

Direct Pressure The most effective

way to control external bleeding is by applying pressure directly over the wound. This pressure must not only be firm enough to stop the bleeding, but it must also be maintained long enough to “seal off” the damaged surface.

METHOD FOR TREATING SEVERE BLEEDING

SCIENTIFIC BUILDING OF SHELTER Shelter protects you from adverse weather and also gives

you a mental boost. A shelter can range from a "natural shelter"; such as a cave

or a fallen-down tree, to an intermediate form of man-made shelter such as a debris hut, a tree pit shelter, or a snow cave, to completely man-made structures such as a tarp, tent, or a longhouse

How to build a shelter Cut a limb off of a tree about 1.8-2.1 meters long (6-7 feet

high) and lean it against a tree, preferably in between the trunk and another limb.

Lay sticks along the first limb, lining it to where it may resemble a feather on the back of an arrow, as in the picture here.

Place flowers, leaves, excess branches, and mud all around your shelter. These items should cover the holes made in the framework of the picture above.

WATER AND FOOD A human being can survive an average of three to

five days without the intake of water. A lack of water causes dehydration, which may result in lethargy, headaches, dizziness, confusion, and eventually death. Hence water should be drunk at regular intervals.

Culinary root tubers, fruit, edible mushrooms, edible nuts, edible beans, edible cereals or edible leaves, edible moss, edible cacti and algae can be searched and if needed, prepared (mostly by boiling). these foods are relatively high in calories, providing some energy to the body. Plants are some of the easiest food sources to find in the jungle, forest or desert because they're stationary and can thus be had without exerting much effort.[9] Skills, and equipment (such as bows, snares and nets) necessary to gather animal food in the wild include animal trapping, hunting, fishing
