    Evaluates things, pleasure, and possessions

    correctly and without prejudice

A values-based life is clearly vital for a Healthy

    HIPPOCRATIC OATH

The Hippocratic Oath, a seminaldocument on the ethicsof medicalpractice, was attributed to Hippocratesin antiquity. This is probably the mostfamous document of the Hippocratic

Corpus. Recently the authenticity ofthe document has come underscrutiny. While the Oath is rarely usedin its original form today, it serves as afoundation for other, similar oathsand

laws that define good medical practiceand morals. Such derivatives areregularly taken today by medicalgraduates about to enter medicalpractice.

    Health-Care is Integral and Holistic

    if it also focuses on:

    Preservation of HealthPrevention of Disease

    not just curing bodily disease.

  • 8/12/2019 SARAPAVAN Human Values English

Health should include the fourth dimension:

    SPIRITUAL WELL BEING

WHO brought in a resolution in 1983 to include

the Spiritual dimension of health, but it was not

until 1998 the Executive Board of the WHOaccepted the suggested amendment to the

Constitution:Health is a dynamic state of complete physical,

mental, spiritual and social wellbeing, and not

merely absence of disease or infirmity.

  • 8/12/2019 SARAPAVAN Human Values English

Disease in its origin is not matter, but theultimate product of deep seated and longacting forces. Therefore, treatment at thematerial plane (body) alone cannot effect a

    complete healing.

    Without surrendering to a Higher-Power,

humanity will be plagued with anxiety anddepression, the biggest contributor to disease.

Medical education today has become increasinglyself-centred, de-humanised and fragmented. Thereis too much emphasis on academic performance, and acquisition of technical skills.

As a result we are: Developing a manipulative intelligence

    Not exercising proper discrimination

Misusing human and natural resources Not enabling patients to tap their own inner

    resources to fulfil their aspirations.

There isnt yet any serious attempt to

incorporate basic spiritual teaching in the

    undergraduate and post-graduate trainingof

doctors. Of course it will demand anenormous turn around from the current

entrenched position of a secular and

    mechanistic view on human sciences.

    21/41

    Sectarian beliefs compound the problem

further, and it would be a formidable task

to overcome such vested interests inScientific, Religious, Commercial, Legal

and Political domains that seek control.

Globalisation:Proper Medical Relief should bemade available to the sick. It is the birthright of allpeople.

De-commercialisation:Medical relief should notbe beyond the means of any human being.

Humanisation:All Health-Care workers shouldhave a 'humane' approach in patient-care andpractise 'Human Values'.

Spiritualisation:Those involved in Patient-caremust know of the Spiritual Dimension in Manand try to incorporate the same in the practice ofHealing.

We need to re-educate ourselves that weare spiritual beings, with a body, mind

and spirit - Not just biological machines.

Mere material science of treating bodily

    afflictions is incomplete, without

understanding the sublime science ofMind & Spirit, Birth, Life and Death.

Our attention is limited to the body and

not able to see the person in the patient!

Science of Medicine can be taught, but theArt of Healing is learned only by practise.

The art of healing is handed down byexperienced practitioners, not books!

    In the materialistic, high-tech environment,

    intimidated by medico-legal constraints and

peer pressure, the doctor has to work hard to

keep the body alive, oblivious of the suffering

    of the patient within.

Death is only casting aside the body!Quality of life is important - Not Quantity

The cult of greed has not only bankruptedour economy but also is destroying every bitof compassion .

. leading to the frightening mess we aremaking, even with the dying, where

patients die hidden away in hospitals in thecold company of machines.

    Heart of Compassion

    Spirituality kindles a spontaneous

and sympathetic feeling in thedoctor and enables him to treathis patient as he would his kithand kin.

The inter-relationship of thehealer and the healed can be fullyunderstood only through

    Spiritual Awareness.

There exists a sacred bond between the

    doctor and the patient.

  • 8/12/2019 SARAPAVAN Human Values English

    29/41

Lack of love, excessive and unrelenting pain,

fear and such negative experiences weaken

the spirit and consequently the body.

    Tender Loving Care(T.L.C) gives confidence

to the patient and strengthens his spirit and

    thereby his will to recover.

    Altruistic qualities

Selfless love, joy, calmness, trust, courage,

humility, giving happiness to others, etc. -strengthen the immune systemwith a rise inCD4 T cells, thus improving health. There isalso an increase in encephalins and

    endorphins.

    All the opposites The Negativities:

Apathy, irritability, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts, jealousy, hatred, envy-

affect ones own well being and the CD4 Tcells show a sharp downturn.

Health is in our hands !Health requires an evolved mind

Selfish goals are injurious to the individual

especially when they are at the expense ofothers

    Competitiveness, rivalry, violence,

pettiness, jealousy, hatred and a wholehoard of negative activities - criticising, comparing, calculating, worrying,

    imagining and so on.

These lead to mental and physical

    disturbances and consequently diseases.

Mind When we dont know something, our ignorance is bliss; we are not affectedby it. But, when we know of something, itwill affect us.

Mental Attitude - A change is possible

through a change in Educational System.

  • 8/12/2019 SARAPAVAN Human Values English

    35/41

Instead of limiting Education to only an External,

Intellect-based, Objective Education, we also need

to give our students an Internal, Intuition-based,

    Subjective and Transformation Education.

Thus the secular knowledge and skills gained by

them will have added value we would then

    Skill such knowledge.

Mere Objective knowledge will Kill it.

    Sathya Sai Baba says:

Education must teach a person how to live lifeas a true human being.

It must purify the heart and clarify the vision.

It must prevent pollution of the head, heart andhand, caused by habits injurious to theindividual, the society and the nation.

It must promote virtues and raise the moral andspiritual standards of mankind.
