1. Maria Dahlmann Sangina Diaz- Garcia SOCIAL ACTION PROJECT 2. We chose the Welcome Home Shelter due to the fact that this social class, which would be homeless women and families, are sometimes overlooked within society. Homeless individuals account for a large portion of our society, especially right here in Greensburg. This issue is not discussed very often, thus leaving residents uneducated on this problem. Each homeless person has a unique story with their own personal reasons as to how they ended up in their situation; not every story is the same. WELCOME HOME SHELTER GREENSBURG, PA 3. The Welcome Home Shelter offers help to those having no place to live. This also includes food, clothing, and shelter for their children. The time they are allowed to stay is 30-60 days, with assistance provided to help them find employment and a home. Staff at Welcome Home also help those with mental health conditions and substance addiction to find them the proper help. It is important for those less fortunate to have the help they need to become more self-sufficient in life. ABOUT WELCOME HOME 4. There are many people/families homeless for many different reasons. The shelter we chose, Welcome Home, is always in need of donations. We decided to help Welcome Home and their residents by collecting food donations. When a facility depends upon donations from outside of the organization, there is that fear of running low on supplies. Society should always be willing to lend a helping hand since every bit of help adds up, and makes a difference. SOCIAL SIGNIFICANCE 5. Our food drive was originally going to be at the university, through social networking, and by word of mouth at places of employment. As it turns out, social networking was the most successful avenue in terms of receiving positive response. We met with numerous individuals throughout the past 6-8 weeks to accept donations of canned and non-perishable food items. ACTION/SOLUTION 6. Funding for our Social Action Project was not necessary considering we were accepting donations. We felt this was the best way to achieve our goal, mainly because there was no money involved on anyones part. FUNDING 7. Our course theme for Senior Seminar this semester is Media Literacy. Our Social Action Project fit perfectly into this category since we used social media to promote our ideas. Using Facebook was successful for our goal set to collect food donations for Welcome Home Shelter. RELATION TO COURSE THEME 8. Like we had mentioned previously, social networking helped us the most in achieving our goal; this seemed to be the most effective way to put word out to people. Many people were in contact with us immediately, but what followed really surprised us. Those whom actually followed through with providing food donations for us were those whom did not have much to begin with. We expected to receive most of our donations from those whom were more financially able to do so. This was not the case, which was shocking. It seems as if those whom have struggled, or are struggling, understand what it is like, and are willing to help others in the same or worse situation. RESULTS OF OUR SAP
