CLASS PROJECT “HELLO NEWTON”

Carried out during the first semester of the

2013/2014 school year

Twenty 7th grade students, Physics teacher and

EFL teacher participated in the project

Theme:

Isaac Newton – life and work

Newton’s Laws of Motion

Newton’s Law of Gravity

o The topic was discussed both in Physics and EFL

classes.

PHYSICS CLASSES

1st Physics class – “Life and Work of Isaac Newton”

“Flipped Classroom” – prior to the class, students had

to go through materials the teacher had posted on the

internet

“Mind Maps” – during the class, students worked in

groups (optics, biography, motion, gravity) and

presented acquired knowledge by means of mind

maps.

PHYSICS CLASSES

2nd Physics class – “ The Second Law of Motion”

Students revised The First Law of Motion by

watching videos

Students watched videos and PhET simulations

showing the dependence of acceleration on force

and mass.

Students drew their own conclusions about the type

of dependence between force and acceleration as

well as between mass and acceleration.

PHYSICS CLASS

3rd Physics class – “Laws of Motion”

“Rotating model” – students circulated around the

room changing places at several spots where they

performed simple experiments to demonstrate all

three laws of motion.

EFL CLASSES

1st EFL class – “Getting to Know Newton”

Warm up class –

• watched a short film about Isaac Newton (life

and work)

• talked about the film – discussed his life and

achievements

• learned vocabulary specific for a particular

scientific field

EFL CLASSES

2nd EFL class – “Newton Through My Eyes”

Prior to the class – students were divided into 5

groups:

• Newton’s Life and Work

• The First Law of Motion

• The Second of Motion

• The Third Law of Motion

• The Law of Gravity

Page 8: Sanja Bulat-Ivana Jokic: Creativity in teaching science

EFL CLASSES

Students were assigned tasks – to explore and

present the given topics the way they chose

In the class – students presented their work

• one PPT presentation

• two posters

• one demonstration and explanation

• one short role-play

“NEWTON RULES”

Extracurricular classes were used for preparation

and rehearsing of the play “Newton Rules”

The play showed, in a slightly humorous way, our

view of how Newton had come to his laws

The play was multimedia – students’ acting took

turns with the display of streamed videos

The play was in both Serbian and English

The play was performed at the Festival of Science

in December 2013

REFLECTION AND EVALUATION

Implementation of PBL into our work

• increased students’ motivation

• related subject’s contents to real life

• led to more durable knowledge

• led to team and cooperative work

• led to peer teaching and learning

• provided application of modern teaching

methods

• correlation of subjects and subject matters

REFLECTION AND EVALUATION

Students were given the opportunity to develop

certain skills:

• Creativity

• Planning

• Critical Thinking and Decision Making

• Communication and Collaboration

• Information and ICT Literacy

• Flexibility and Adaptability

• Initiative

• Responsibility
