From Monsignor Tom’s Desk

We’re delighted to welcome Father Wafik Nasir, S.J., to our parish. He is a member of the California Province of the Society of Jesus (more commonly known as the Jesuits). Born in Egypt, he came to the U.S. with his family when in his early teens. Currently he is a professor at the Gregorian University in Rome, where many of our Rome-trained priests attended classes.

His doctorate is in Arabic and Islamic Studies, and among his duties, he teaches courses on Islam, and Arabic and Christian Heritage and Apologetics. He also has written several scholarly books on the subject. His in-sights on Middle East affairs provide us with some very interesting and intellectually stimulating conversations at mealtime. He will be with us for the entire month, celebrating Mass and the Sacraments during his stay. Part of his visit will coincide with our annual sojourn to Guatemala, taking a representative number of Knights of Columbus (16) from throughout the state of Florida to work on our mission project. Please pray for the success of our journey, which will begin on Saturday, July 18th. Recently (June and July), the Church has been celebrating a whole slew of feasts of martyrs for the Faith. Besides the great Apostles Peter, Paul, Barnabas, Thomas and James, we have such notables as Maria Goretti and Boniface, and the collective martyrs of China and Uganda. This great array of witnesses testifies to the an-cient adage, “The blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.” Two more martyrs, friends in life and sepa-rated by two weeks in death are Thomas More and John Fisher. The first was a layman and chancellor under Henry VIII; the second was a bishop and was named a cardinal while imprisoned by the same king. Both re-fused to acknowledge the king as the supreme authority of the Church in England, and refused to accept the king’s debasement of marriage in divorcing his legitimate wife and adulterously marrying Anne Boleyn (who later followed them to the gallows). These well-known leaders gave their lives rather than compromise their beliefs. When Henry tried to redefine the power given to St. Peter and, hence, his successors as head of the Church, Fisher and, even more vociferously, More defended the Church teachings on marriage, and both paid the ultimate price for it. Anyone who wonders what the term “marriage equality” really means today need only to be aware of the im-pending fallout that will occur in our laws, courts and public policies over the upcoming years. Good (but per-haps naïve people) who think that the Church will be allowed to continue her social mission without an in-creasing government interference may be in for a rude awakening. Though we, as Christians, have a moral ob-ligation to respect the God-given dignity of all persons, including those of same-sex attraction, and will be held accountable to God for the way we treat others, we also have a duty to think clearly and to live and work to uphold the truth about human sexuality, the purpose of marriage and the integrity of the family --courts and kings and presidents notwithstanding. Over fifty years ago (!!), during the Second Vatican Council, Pope St. John XXIII wrote a powerful encycli-cal on the nature of peace: “Pacem in Terris” (“Peace on Earth”). In it, he stressed that “peace on earth” – which mankind has so longed for and sought, “can never be established, never guaranteed except by diligent observance of the divinely established order.” No political power, no lobbying campaign, no judges, no presi-dent can redesign the blueprint laid down by God for the well-being of His children. We can’t say we really care for the family by redefining its meaning. We can’t provide for family needs by undercutting its long-standing traditional place in our culture. No matter what their intentions, nations that ignore these truths are laying the foundations of new strife, war and suffering. This is certainly not what our God wants for His chil-dren. Pray that the faith, integrity, courage and endurance of the martyrs will give us the strength and example to meet the challenge of a society that seems to be redefining itself by the influence and power of the Evil One. The words of a popular hymn come to mind in leading us to meet the challenge: “Our God is an awesome God; He reigns from heaven above with wisdom, power and love; our God is an awesome God!”

Stewardship News Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of July 11/12, 2015

The Letter to the Ephesians relates to us that God, the Father, has established a divine plan to bring all of creation to Christ and that He has blessed us with the divine gifts to help implement that plan. Chris-tian stewards know what their gifts are and remain committed to using them in the service of the Lord. Do we know what our gifts are? Do we believe that God has given us these gifts? Are we committed to using our gifts to serve the Lord? © 2015, International Catholic Stewardship Council. All rights reserved

Stewardship Reflection Most scholars are of the opinion that St. Paul wrote his letter to the Ephesians while he was imprisoned in Rome. Those who study Sacred Scripture find this letter different from most of Paul’s letters, that rather than addressing particular problems which may have arisen in a Christian community established by Paul, it develops a theology, an explanation of what it means to be a Christian. At the end of this particular reading, Paul makes reference to two important aspects of our faith and of our beliefs. St. Paul tells us that we have “believed in him (Jesus)” and that we are “sealed” with the promised Holy Spirit. Believing in Jesus, in His promises, in His redemption of us, is at the core of everything we do. This trust, this belief, is what allows us to take the steps needed to follow Him, to be His disciple, and to practice a stewardship way of living. Note that we believe first, however, and then we are sealed. Yes, we are sealed at Baptism and at Confir-mation as those represent our promises to the Lord. We do not need some assurance from God as to His good graces. By believing, by having faith and trust, we are able to be Christ’s representative. It is worth recalling and repeating that well-known quote from St. Thomas Aquinas:

2015, www.TheCatholicSteward.com All rights reserved

Prayer and Gratitude: Two Virtues of the Christian Steward Virtues are something we possess. They form a part of who we are and grow when we develop good patterns of behavior we call habits. We are, and become, what we repeatedly do. This is especially important for those who desire to enter into a deeper relation-ship with Jesus Christ. Making a habit of praying on a daily basis is essential to cultivating a more inti-mate relationship with the Lord. And the amount of time we give back to the Lord each day in prayer reveals the extent of our gratitude for God’s gift of those 24 hours.

A daily habit of prayer leads us to an acute aware-ness of God’s blessings in our lives and how we are called to use these blessings, gifts graciously be-stowed upon us, in a manner that gives glory to God. There is no better way to discern how God wants us to steward our gifts than through prayer.

There is something else that happens in prayer – because we are awakened to just how generous our God is we naturally grow in the stewardship virtue of gratitude. The better our life of prayer, the greater our sense of gratitude becomes. And as we grow in gratitude, we are motivated to spend more time in prayer, giv-ing thanks to God. So prayer and gratitude are both equally important as stewardship virtues. In fact, St. Paul put the two together in his letter to the Phi-lippians: “Don’t worry about anything, but pray about everything, with grateful hearts offer up your prayers and requests to God” (Phil. 4:6). Gratitude leads to a greater prayer life and prayer leads to a greater attitude of gratitude. How do you pray? When and how often do you pray? Do you pray with a grateful heart? These are good stewardship questions. Moreover, they remind us that virtues are developed by learning good hab-its. By making a habit of culti-vating our prayer life and devel-oping a deeper sense of grati-tude we will naturally grow in faith and become the best pos-sible stewards and disciples that God wishes us to be. Spiritual reflections by ICSC member Dan Potvin © International Catholic Stewardship Council.

Please dress modestly in church!

The church is the house of God. Usually when we go to visit a friend, attend a wedding, or funeral, we dress properly. So much more important is our Father. We go to His house to give reverence and honor, with our heart, and attitude, Do you come to the Lord’s banquet with the proper “wedding garment”?

It hurts to lose someone, but with GriefShare, you don’t have to go through the grieving process alone.

GriefShare is a biblically-based grief support group at St. Vincent Ferrer, made up of friendly, caring people who will walk alongside you through one of life’s most difficult experiences. Our current session has ended, but another 13 week session is planned to begin in late summer. Please contact Darin Lueken at [email protected] or 561-289-2542 to register for this next session. We also encourage you to check our ministry page on the parish website or our facebook page at www.facebook.com/svfgriefshare for updates.

Many people have said that what drew them to the Catholic Church was the Eucharist. As we reflect on recognizing Jesus in the Breaking of the Bread, think for a moment whether there is someone you could invite to Mass and to explore what else the Catholic Faith might hold for them. For more information, please contact Deacon Rusty Skinner at [email protected] (best way) or call the parish office at 276-6892.

Sometimes they just need a caring ear to listen. In some cases, we will make an appointment to meet with them in the Rectory conference room to get a better understanding of their predicament; however, most interac-

tions are over the phone from your home office. Care Ministers work one morning or afternoon a week, taking telephone messages from our answering service and returning calls to clients. Our ministry meets every Wednesday at 7PM to re-view the cases of the past week. It’s at our meetings that the more involved cases get the input from the “group think tank” that helps resolve the case. New members receive training with one of our Care Ministers until they feel comforta-ble to work alone. During the season, we would like to have three Care Ministers, during the week, take calls on their assigned day. If you think this Ministry speaks to you, we invite you to sit in on one of our meeting to see if our Ministry is worth your time and talents. The best training for this work is your own life’s experiences. For additional information, please call 272-7580, and leave a message for Mike or Joe to call you back.

Mission Statement

The St. Vincent Ferrer Care Ministry is dedicated to provide temporary assistance to the poor and disadvantaged in our community. Our first priority is to provide assistance to the truly needy of our parish, with a commitment to help all those in need, regardless of nationality or creed. We will provide food, utilities, shelter and essential transportation. Special needs will be addressed and decided upon during our weekly meeting based on resources available. We will work jointly with other Care Ministries and organizations to help solve the larger problems brought to our atten-tion, and provide both guidance and direction to access the proper agency. We will always conduct ourselves without prejudice and treat our clients with care, respect and consideration while ex-tending God’s hand to those in need of our assistance. SVFCM is a 501 (C) (3) nonprofit care ministry. Your tax deductible donations are recorded in the parish end of year report which are available upon request.

Intentions of Jaime & Betty Ramirez On their 50th Anniversary

By the Ramirez Family

~ Rosary for Peace ~

Catholic tradition teaches that the rosary was given to St. Dominic by Mary herself, as a means to combat heresy and to promote spirituality. The rosary is a meditation on the life of Christ, through the eyes of the human being who knew Him best: His mother. Although our lives are very busy, please join us Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the Adoration Chapel to pray the Rosary for Peace.

Please pray for our deceased loved ones

as well as the Men and Women of our parish family who gave their lives in service to our country.

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not

walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
