PRAY – FAST – GIVE

“What are you giving up for Lent?”

The question Catholic asks each other this time of year!

But the Church asks us to do more than “give something up”.

We are asked to do 3 things during Lent:

PRAY: spend more time than usual with God.

To help with that, please take a LITTLE BLACK BOOK with you.

It will help you pray differently, every day of Lent.

And there are LITTLE PURPLE BOOKS for the children!

FAST: this is the “giving up” part!

What in your life is God asking you to give up?

It’s not candy or sodas, but attitudes and behaviors

that God would like us to give up.

GIVE: put your sacrifices to work helping others.

To help with that, we have OPERATION RICE BOWL.

Money saved from sacrificing during Lent

can be put in the Rice Bowl and

we will collect it during Holy Week.

It will be sent to Catholic Relief Services

to help with projects around the world

that help the poor, displaced, and hungry.

For more information, take a RICE BOWL with you today,

or go to www.crsricebowl.org

Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray

and to be guided by the Holy Spirit

to do the work he was sent to do.

We go into the desert with Jesus during these forty days

for the same reasons.

I pray that your fasting, praying and giving

lead you all to know the mission God has for you too!

Yours, Lucy

OUR LADY OF THE WAYSIDE

Sat. Feb. 13 4:30 pm Deceased Members of Our Lady of the Wayside

Sun. Feb. 14 9:30 am Parishioners of Our Lady of the Wayside

Dear Beloved Parishioners,

As we begin our Lenten journey of faith, there is an image for us to

reflect upon. It is the image of the cross. The cross, though, is more than

an image. It is a powerful sign, a revealing truth of our faith. The cross is

the intersection of the vertical with the horizontal.

The vertical part of the cross symbolizes our relationship with God.

During Lent, we are to think about and to be honest with our relationship

with God. There are questions that challenge us to answer. Do we take

time each and every day to pray to the good Lord? The good Lord speaks

to us in the stillness and silence of prayer. The little black Lenten books

provide daily opportunities for us to meditate on the readings of the day.

Also, do we put God first in our lives or replace him with others gods like

money, material possessions or food ?

The horizontal part of the cross represents our relationship with the

people in our lives. Perhaps the most important question that challenges

us is how do we view and treat others? Do we use people for our own

selfish ambitions, thereby treating our bothers and sisters in Christ as

objects? Our faith reminds us that we are all made in the image and like-

ness of God. Therefore, every human being deserves and has the inalien-

able right to be treated with respect and dignity. Recall the greatest teach-

ing of Jesus. He commands that we love God and love our neighbor as

ourselves. Doing this can be far harder than giving up certain things in

life or even fasting.

As we gaze upon the cross of Jesus, may we have the courage and

humility to do some real soul searching during this Lenten season. God

gives us the grace to live a life of faith. Allow the cross to be a source of

strength for you. May God bless you with his grace during this Lenten

season.
