The Spirituality of Lent

Lent is a season of grace when Catholics deepen their spiritual life through the intentional practice of the traditional disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The immediate goal of these practices is to purify our hearts, to be converted and re-formed more closely in the image of Christ so that we will be able to participate in the resurrected life of Christ at Easter. The long-term goal is to incorporate these Lenten disciplines as a way of life so that we live the resurrected life of Christ and so are made worthy to live with him eternally in the kingdom of heaven.

A wonderful image of these Lenten devotions that I heard at a mission many years ago is that of coloring Easter eggs. The eggs are dipped in colored vinegar so that they are dyed beautiful colors. The more they are dipped the deeper the color gets. Just so with our souls. Each year during Lent we dip our souls and get colored a little bit in the beautiful image of Christ. The longer we do this, the deeper this image gets imprinted into our souls. Though the colors may fade a little during the year as the reality of our human condition presses upon us, each Lent we dip ourselves into these spiritual disciplines and are colored more deeply in the image of Christ.

In prayer we raise our minds and hearts to God seeking to know his will for us. But the ultimate goal of prayer is simply to be with God, growing into a more deeply intimate relationship of love and trust. In fasting we give up “things” to loosen our attachment to, and dependence on, them. The ultimate goal of fasting is to detach from whatever separates us from God. In almsgiving we share our blessings with those who are less fortunate in obedience to God’s command and to atone for our sins. The ultimate goal of char-ity is to realize that we are all one in the body of Christ. In God’s kingdom there is no “mine” and “theirs”.

First Sunday of Lent

In the first reading God makes a covenant with Noah and his descendants with a promise that there will never be anoth-er flood to devastate the world. He places a rainbow in the sky as a sign of his covenant. St. Peter says that, just as God delivered Noah from the flood, so, too, the waters of baptism saves their souls by an “appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ”. In the gospel, Jesus is driven into the desert for forty days, tempted by Satan and ministered to by the angels. He returns to Galilee, proclaiming that the kingdom of God is at hand. He tells the people to repent and believe in the gospel.

Genesis 9:8-15 1 Peter 3:18-22 Mark 1:12-15

The First Sunday of Lent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the First Sunday of Lent. We began the Lenten journey this past Wednesday, receiving ashes on our foreheads. Marked with the sign of the cross we were told that “we are dust and unto dust we shall return.” Ash Wednesday reminds us that the things of this world will pass away and calls us to focus on things that are eternal. The penitential practices of the season are a way of remembering that the earthly gifts we enjoy are indeed gifts from God to be used wisely. The practices of self-denial and almsgiving (charity, sharing) remind us that many of the things we enjoy are luxuries, not necessities. And everything we have is to be appreciated as gift, to be used for the glory of God. The practice of prayer, sitting quietly with God, can help us maintain the proper spiritual perspective and guide us in the right use of the gifts we have.

In baptism, we have been given the grace to be united with God and given the Holy Spirit to keep us in right rela-tionship to him. Lent is, of course, a journey to baptism. Using the disciplines of the season, we focus our spiritual energies on stripping away that which separates us from God. Conversion, a turning around of our lives, is the spir-itual change in our attitudes and actions that realigns our wills with the will of God. The disciplines of Lent are not virtues in themselves. These disciplines are the process which leads us back to God. Ideally they should be practiced all year.

In today’s gospel, Jesus spends forty days in the desert, tempted by Satan. This tells us that Jesus is human. We all face temptations. Lent is a spiritual odyssey that we take with Christ. We learn from him; we imitate him. And if we are faithful, we become like him (our human nature is divinized). Jesus spends the forty days in prayer to allow himself to be steeped in the presence of God. He grows closer to God, understands God’s will for him more clearly and is given the power to carry out God’s will. He goes forth proclaiming the gospel of God saying, “This is the time of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and believe in the gospel.” Lent reminds us that the kingdom of God is here. We have to live in the here and now. Now is the time of fulfillment. Now is the time to turn to God. And, most importantly, now is the time to believe in the gospel.

The gospel of God is the good news that God has made a covenant with us, offering us forgiveness of sin and a share in his divine life. In the reading from Genesis, God establishes a covenant with Noah, promising never again to de-stroy mortal beings through the waters of a flood. This prefigures baptism where the waters destroy the power of sin and give birth in us to eternal life. St. Peter reminds us of this, telling us that baptism saves us now. Just as God promised Noah that the rainbow would be an eternal sign of the covenant, so, too, is baptism an eternal sign of God’s covenant with us. Because we are baptized only once (usually as infants), we need to be reminded of this covenant. Every Lent we are reminded of this covenant as we follow Jesus to the cross and resurrection. We hear again the story of salvation. We participate in the promise of salvation when we imitate Christ, overcome our hu-man temptations and live our baptism.

Just as Jesus was given the grace of God in the desert, we are given the grace of God when we participate in God’s covenant. The Eucharist is the constant and consistent reminder of the covenant. In the Eucharist we participate in the death and resurrection of Christ who gives himself to us. Lord, only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Our Girl Scout Family Night was held last Saturday. Everyone had a good time with food, games and fellowship. Thank you to all the Scout leaders and parents for hosting this fun event.

All are invited to attend our Tuesday evenings of reflection. This week Sr. Mary McNulty will be with us to share her reflections on fasting.. Stations of the Cross will be celebrated twice on Friday. The Four-Parish Mission will be held on March 5-7 at St. Pascal. Details are on page eight. The schedule of Lenten services can be found on page four. To help us on our Lenten journey, we have a booklet of reflections (“The Little Black Book”) for each day of the season. These booklets are available at the church exits and at the rectory.

The Parents’ Association will host the annual St. Patrick’s Day Party Saturday, March 3. All adults are invited to come out for traditional Irish music and a very enjoyable evening. Tickets are on sale in the vestibule.

Have a holy and blessed Lent. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

ST. ROBERT BELLARMINE SPRED NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!

SPRED is a faith community ministry that serves individuals with developmental or intellectual challenges. SPRED is an acronym for Special Religious Enrichment Development. The purpose of SPRED is to make it possible for each parish to welcome persons with special needs into a SPRED group where they become prepared to participate in the liturgical life of their parish, receive their sacraments, and are part of a community where their faith is nourished by volunteers and our special friends. Volunteers need no prior experiences working with our young adults with special needs. All volun-teers attend a helper information session and continue to be mentored by the SPRED catechists in the group. The SPRED process values each person and responds to the individual needs and gifts of all. It is based on friendship and respect, and honors the learning styles of those with special needs. SRB SPRED meets on Wednesday evenings from September – May. We are in need of additional volunteers!! PLEASE HELP!!! Please contact Julie Oloroso at (773) 218-4754 or Michael Radcliffe at (773) 771-4033 for additional information.

The Girl Scouts will be selling cookies in the vestibule after all masses this weekend

(February 17 / 18, 2018).

Do You have a favorite cookie?

Stop by to pick up a box or two.

Selling cookies teaches goal setting, decision making,

money management, people skills, and business ethics—

aspects essential to leadership, to success, and to life.

Stations of the Cross Friday, February 23

2:20 pm and 7:00 PM The Stations of the Cross is a Lenten devotion

that offers witness to Jesus’ Passion and Death. At each station we use our senses and our imagination to reflect prayerfully upon Jesus’ Suffering, Death, and Resurrection, and to simply experience the visual images

to reflect on Christ’s love for us.
