Dear Parishioners,

As you saw in the announcement in last week’s

bulletin (repeated again this week), the Sisters of

Mercy will be leaving our convent in June. I know

that this is something the sisters do reluctantly but the

reasons for the move are certainly understandable.

The Sisters of Mercy have been an important part of

Saint Matthias Parish for over 100 years. It was in

1911 that two sisters began coming every week from

the Mother House in Merion to teach our Sunday

School. When the parish school opened in 1917 Sister

Mary Lioba and Sister Mary Madeline were the first

sisters assigned to the school. They each taught three

grades and Sister Mary Lioba also served as principal!

Between 1917 and 1941 the sisters assigned to Saint

Matthias School walked back and forth from the

Mother House in Merion each school day. The

convent was constructed in 1941 so that the Sisters

could live on the parish property.

Saint Matthias School continued for eighty-two years.

During that time 130 Sisters of Mercy served as

teachers and/or principals at the school. Many other

sisters have lived in our convent and have continued

to be a wonderful and enriching presence in our

parish.

Saint Matthias Parish owes a deep debt of gratitude to

the Sisters of Mercy. We are going to plan a Sisters of

Mercy appreciation day for a Sunday in the Spring so

that we will have a chance to express our thanks. We

will have more information as it approaches.

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. Mesure

A Sad Leave-Taking

The Sisters of Mercy living in Saint Matthias Convent

regretfully announce that they will be leaving the Parish at

the end of June 2015. Our Sisters have served in the Parish

almost from the beginning, walking from the Motherhouse

in Merion in the early days, before the Convent was built,

or being driven by horse and carriages in bad weather. We

have loved living in this wonderful Parish but the Convent

is large, with many stairs to climb. Once we were thirteen

Sisters; now we are five - five aging Sisters for whom the

stairs are proving an increasing challenge. With grateful

hearts for all that has been, here at Saint Matthias, we will

move on to more age-friendly, elevator-enhanced

dwellings. THANK YOU to all the dedicated Priests who

have served us over all these years, and to the outstanding

Staff and Parishioners it has been our privilege to know.

God bless you all!

First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion

At the Church doors are baskets containing cards with the

names of our children who are preparing to receive the

Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First

Communion. Parishioners are invited to take home one of

these cards and begin praying for that child as they prepare to

receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation and First

Communion. This is a great way for all of our church

community to be involved in the celebration of the

Sacraments, and our children will learn the importance

of prayer in our faith community. Thank you.

First Reconciliation: Sunday, March 8, 2015

First Eucharist: Sunday, May 3, 2015

CATHOLIC CHARITIES APPEAL

~Giving Hope~

The annual Catholic Charities Appeal for 2015 ~ Giving Hope ~ is in full swing. This is a very special appeal, as you know. Your generosity provides special education students the tools to succeed; gives the homeless a safe place to eat, sleep and get back on their feet; provides students in rough neighborhoods a safe place to learn; helps retired priests to receive needed medical attention in their final years. For hundreds of thousands, your generosity Gives Hope.

Last year, donations from Saint Matthias amounted to $49,919, or 119% of our goal! A job well done ~ thank you for your generous response! With everyone giving whatever they can, large or small, we can certainly top our goal again this year and help so many struggling people in this area. As Jesus told us, “‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’”

In addition to the envelope in your packet from the parish, the Archdiocese also sent out information and envelopes which you may use directly. You may also contribute on-line at www.catholiccharitiesappeal.org. Be sure to use the pull down menu to designate Saint Matthias as your parish. All donations are placed in a separate 501c(3) Catholic Charities fund and cannot be used for any other purpose.

Together we can truly make a difference in the lives of those who are in need. THANK YOU!!!

Saint Matthias Youth Group (grades 7 - 12) meets

Sundays from 5 to 7 PM in the Parish Center. We learn

more about our Catholic Faith, share meals together,

participate in community service, and enjoy other fun

activities. If you are interested in joining or helping

out, please contact Katie Bryson: 610-664-0207

or [email protected].

Consultation of the Clergy and Faithful

for the 2015 Synod of Bishops in Rome

Pope Francis has called for an Ordinary Synod of Bishops in

October, 2015 on the theme, The Vocation and Mission of the

Family in the Church and Contemporary World. The General

Secretary of the Synod of Bishops, following a practice that

typically anticipates every Synod, invites consultation on this

topic to assist with its preparation.

A Preparatory Document has been issued by the Holy See to

initiate this consultation along with a series of questions.

Archbishop Chaput, in an effort to provide an opportunity for

the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia to

engage in this consultation in as wide a manner as possible,

has authorized the use of this instrument for local

participation.

The clergy and faithful are asked to read the complete

Preparatory Document, or its summary, on the archdiocesan

website, and then answer any or all of the questions that

follow, by visiting www.archphila.org. For those individuals

who do not have access to the Internet, please contact the

Office for Communications at (215) 587-3747. Responses to

those questions are to be submitted by Monday, March 9, 2015.

We invite our young adults in their 20s & 30s to gather

together to deepen their Catholic Faith, develop

friendships with other believers, strengthen a sense of

community, and find help to live our Catholic faith

through service and discipleship. The Saint Matthias

Young Professionals Group meets on the third

Wednesday of each month at 7:30 PM. For more

information please contact Katie Bryson at 610-664-0207

or [email protected].

SECOND COLLECTION ENVELOPES This Weekend: Care For Aging Priests - This is a special opportunity to express your gratitude for the many blessings received through the ministry of our priests. This collection helps subsidize the care of aging and ill priests in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. Next Weekend: Operation Rice Bowl – the contributions made during Lent through Catholic Relief Service’s Operation Rice Bowl support CRS’ development projects in over 50 countries. Twenty-five percent of all funds collected remain here in our Archdiocese and are used to purchase food to stock local emergency food cupboards and soup kitchens. The need is certainly there. What a blessing this can be during these difficult times for so many of our neighbors.

All Second Collection envelopes should be placed in the main collection at the time of the offertory of the Mass. Thank you.

IT’S TAX SEASON – if you are in need of a statement of your 2014 contributions to Saint Matthias Church for preparing tax returns, please contact the rectory.
