Below is the St. Michael Prayer. You can cut this out and bring it to Mass if you are not familiar with the prayer. Or, you can start praying this at home to get accustomed to this prayer. Thank you.

Saint Michael Prayer

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.

May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O prince of the Heavenly Host, by

the power of God, cast into hell, satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world

seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

PRAYER NOVENAS FOR JULY & AUGUST

Novena to St. John Vianney – July 26-

August 4 God, you raised up humble St. John Vianney to show what one priest can do. Pour out your graces upon my priests, and all priests, that they follow this saint’s example. So, in the words of St. John Vianney I pray: I Love You, O my God. My only desire is to love You, until the last breath of my life. I love You, O infinitely loveable God, and prefer to die loving You, rather than to live for an instant without You. I Love You, O my God, and I desire only to go to Heaven, to have the happiness of loving You perfectly.

I love You, O my God, and my only fear is to go to Hell, because one will never have the sweet solace of loving You there. O my God, if my tongue cannot say at all times that I love You, at least I want my heart to repeat it to You as many times as I breath. Ah! Do me the grace to suffer while loving You, to love You while suffering, and, that when I die: I not only will love You, but experience it in my heart. I beg You that: the closer I come to my final end, You will increase and perfect my love for You. (Mention your personal intention here…)

I ask this in the names of Jesus. Amen

Novena to St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross (Edith Stein) Novena July 31-

August 9

Dear Sister Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, child of the Day of Atonement Yom Kippur, daughter of Abraham, bride of Christ, seeker of truth,

scholar of the Church, handmaid of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, servant of the Suffering Servant, presence of mercy, victim of hate, embracer of the Cross of Christ-like love, Martyr of Auschwitz, imitator of Jesus, friend of God, please pray for me and intercede for this petition of mine. (Mention your petition here...)

Lord, God of our fathers, you brought St Teresa Benedicta to the fullness of the science of the Cross at the hour of her martyrdom. Fill us with the same knowledge; and, through her intercession, allow us always to seek after you, the supreme truth, to remain faithful until death to the covenant of love ratified in the blood of your Son, for the salvation of All.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Novena to St. Lawrence the Deacon August 1-10

Glorious St. Lawrence, model of Christian fortitude, I implore you in your loving kindness to pray for me before the throne of God. To you I have recourse in the problems that daily surround me. Shield me against my selfishness and my indifference to God and my neighbor. Inspire me to imitate your Christian virtues. May your blessing be with me always, so that I may see and serve Christ in others and work for His Kingdom. Graciously obtain for me from God those favors and graces which I need so much in the trials, miseries and afflictions in life, particularly (name your personal intention here…).

Help me, dear St. Lawrence, to live and die as a faithful child of God, to run in the sweetness of His loving will and to attain the eternal happiness of heaven. Amen.

A Message from Fr. Jonathan Meyer

Why do you wear a black dress? Do you always dress in that fashion?

The law of the Church, states in canon 284: “clerics are to wear suitable ecclesiastical garb.” What is suitable ecclesiastical garb? Well, the United States Bishops Conference defined clerical attire for American priests as: a black roman collar with a suite or a roman cassock. The black dress that I wear is called a roman cassock. It is the traditional dress of a Roman Catholic priest.

I realize that the “social norm” today and for the past 30 years has been a clerical shirt and suite, or even lay cloths, but I prefer to wear the cassock. I wear the roman cassock and sometimes a clerical suite ALL the time. The only time you will see me not wearing clerical attire is when I am running or doing some sort of exercise. (Oh yeah…I do not sleep in it either). Why do I wear it all the time?

▪ First, to be a witness to others about whom I am called to be as a priest. No matter where I go, I am a priest and am called to be a witness to our 2,000-year-old faith in Jesus and His Church. I am called to be a visible witness in word, action and dress. If I am in a gas station, grocery story, library or parish church I am there as a Roman Catholic priest and I am proud to be one.

▪ Second, it shows I am always available. I want to be accessible to everyone. There were times in the life of Christ that He went off to deserted places to be alone, but people always found Him and asked for miracles, teaching and prayers. The same is with the life of a priest. You would be amazed at the countless times that wearing clerics in a “secular” place has brought about blessings.

▪ Third, I wear clerical attire to live a simple life. As a diocesan priest I am asked to take a voluntary vow of poverty. Having simple clothes and few of them, allows me to live this vow of poverty. I can tell you; I have 3 shirts, 3 pairs of pants and 3 cassocks. It is a joy!

▪ Forth, it is my uniform, and uniforms give credibility. When a police officer pulls you over for speeding, he is wearing a uniform or at least he presents his badge. When you go to the doctor’s office you expect a white coat to step in the room. I need to be visible in a universal sense so people can find me and get what they expect.

▪ Fifth, I am never off duty. Ask a parent is they get a day off…they don’t. Well neither do I. I do not officially take a day off. I take Monday morning as a day of prayer or my day away…but NOT as a day off. Officially, I do not have a day off, because I am a priest; it is not a job, but a vocation. I am always working for Jesus; just as a mom or dad are always working in service to their children.

▪ Lastly, I wear my clerics to keep myself out of trouble. My clerics are a constant reminder to myself of who I am and what I am to be doing and how I am to be acting. It reminds me to be attentive to what I say, how I act and where I go. I am called to be a constant witness to Christ. So, this being said, when you see me at a ball game, gas station, grocery store or in the church, know that I am there as a visible, sacramental servant of Christ and God willing a bridge to heaven.

As you have noticed, Fr. Mahan also wears his cassock. It is a joy to be the two priests “in solidum” and also the two Men in Black!

A Message from Fr. Jonathan Meyer

Why do we have to stay for the entirety of Mass and kneel down afterward? After Holy Communion, receiving the Body and Blood of Jesus, we should spend some time in adoring Our Lord, in thanking Him for the grace we have received, and in asking Him for the blessings we need. The Church has officially recommended this practice in an important Instruction Concerning the Worship of the Eucharistic (Inaestimabile Donum. 17). It states, "The faithful are to be recommended not to omit to make a proper thanksgiving after Communion and if possible, by staying behind to pray for a suitable time." I know we are all busy, but I think it is "possible" for us to make the time to thank Jesus. "Thanksgiving after Mass has traditionally been greatly esteemed in the Church for both the priest and the lay faithful," said Cardinal Francis Arinze, "The Roman Missal (the book that has the prayers for mass with it) and the breviary (the book that priest are bound to pray out of several time a day) even suggest prayers for the priest before and after the Eucharistic celebration. There is no reason to believe that this is no longer needed. Indeed, in our noisy world of today, such moments of reflective and loving prayers would seem indicated more than ever before." Pope Benedict XVI in “The Sacrament of Charity” (Sacramentum Caritatis) referred to the "precious time of thanksgiving after communion", urging everyone to preserve the importance of communion as "a personal encounter with the Lord Jesus in the sacrament." He recommended that during this time "it can also be most helpful to remain recollected in silence." "I heartily recommend to the Church's pastors and to the People of God the practice of Eucharistic Adoration, both individually and in community." (Sacramentum Caritatis, 50).

Please strive to understand that my asking you to stay for the entirety of Mass and for an act of thanksgiving, is not about control, but about love and respect. I realize this has not been given as an instruction by other priests or pastors in times past, but it is very important. Isn't it rude to leave the dinner table early without asking permission; how much more at the dinner table of the Lord? I also realize that there are extreme situations when people need to leave Mass: assisting at a parish dinner/event after Mass, a complicated work schedule, sudden sickness etc. There are always reasons and exemptions, we are all human, I am just trying to bring forth reverence for the Lord and respect for the community. If any of you have questions or concerns, please always feel free to talk or ask questions- I am just a phone call or an email away (these are my best forms of communication). We are a family and honest communication is so important! Fr. Jonathan Meyer

If anyone, due to COVID 19, or other illness, is fearful to attend Mass indoors, please talk to Fr. Meyer or Fr. Mahan. Also, note that the 9:15am Sunday Mass at the All Saints - St. John Campus s still outdoors.
