U Death does not missanyone. I’m now 69 yearsold; seven years older thanmy father was when hedied at age 62, and twoyears younger than mymom at age 71. Aware of

the statistics and probability, I applied for andstarted collecting my Social Security as soon aspossible; age 62! The reality is that we will die. Itis not a fact that we want to look at too often,and become depressed and lose our focus onliving life to the full, but it is still inevitable.

Our culture denies death. It is the culture ofperpetual youth that our media and advertisingcontinually exalts. In my dreams I would like toreturn to 35 years old when I seemed at thepinnacle of my powers physically, but I can neverreturn in reality. We have to take care not to foolourselves and run from our deaths.

We prepare best for our deaths by living ourlives. We want to have no regrets when we die.That means that each day is to be taken seriously,as an opportunity to be loving and kind,forgiving and generous. We cannot procrastinate.We do not know either the day or the hour.Refusing to decide on something, is already todecide. Make amends now. Tie up loose ends. Endquarrels. Forgive as the Lord has forgiven you.“For the measure you measure with, will bemeasured back to you.”

We do not live in fear of death, but anxietyabout our deaths is something that we feel,especially as we grow older and encounter illnessand the deaths of loved ones. Fear surroundingour deaths will always be present, no matter howmuch faith in an afterlife we have. But ourpowerful emotions are softened, and broughtunder control by our faith in the resurrection ofChrist. This resurrection faith matures andstrengthens as we pray with our Bible, the word ofGod, and as we enter each week into thecelebration of the Eucharist (Mass);wholeheartedly with our brothers and sisters inChrist.

WE ARE CREATED FOR GOD

In the various appearance accounts of the risenChrist in the Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, and theletters of St. Paul, we take in and meditate as a church- during the Easter season of fifty days especially, onthe fact that death has been conquered. Glory fills usnow and we will be drawn into the fullness of thatglory in heaven. The women disciples were the first to return to thetomb of Jesus. Of course, they were expecting to enterthe tomb and discover his dead body. The tomb wasempty not because of grave robbers or desecration,but because of something wholly unexpected andtotally outside of human experience. In St. John’saccount, Mary Magdalene arrives first by herself andis panicked by the experience running to get help.Peter and another disciple, called “the beloveddisciple” run to the grave and find only the burialclothing that had wrapped his dead body.

The process of belief takes time. Of course they donot yet understand the enormity of what hashappened. Faith in the impossible begins to dawnwithin them. In the next scene, Mary encounters Jesusvery much alive. She thinks he’s a gardener who tendsthe garden area where the tomb is placed. Perhaps shethinks, he has taken the body or knows where it hasbeen laid. But it is the risen Lord in disguise. When hecalls her name “Mary”, she is overcome with emotionfalling to her knees and weeping, holding on to hisfeet. He tells her: “Stop holding on to me, for I havenot yet ascended to the father. But go to my brothersand tell them, ‘I am going to my Father and yourFather, to my God and your God.’”

Although we stand under the shadow of death, thedarkness has been overcome. The light, Jesus Christ,has entered our world and although struck down, Hehas been raised to glory. We see our destiny in Him. Inthe meantime, we have work to do. We carry on thesaving ministry of Jesus until he returns to take ushome. We want to be found watchful and ready whenthat day comes! May the Lord protect us, energize usand shelter us in our daily tasks. Thank you forworking with me in the Vineyard of the Lord. I amblest to serve in this fine faith community.

Father Duffy has shared with us his exciting news thatBishop Barres has appointed him as the new Pastor ofOur Lady of Lourdes Church in Malverne! While wewill greatly miss Fr. Duffy’s deep sense of devotion,spirituality and enthusiasm, we are very happy that he hasreceived this honorable appointment. Fr. Duffy will stillbe with us here at St. Kilian for more than two months, soit gives us all a chance to extend our congratulations. EASTER SUNDAY

“Then they went away quickly from the tomb,fearful yet overjoyed.” The two Marys were in for asurprise. They had come, as usual, to do the ritualanointing of their dead friend’s body. But on theirarrival, not only was there an earthquake, there wasalso an angel whose “appearance was like lightning”and whose “clothing was white as snow.” The braveguards were so scared they “became like dead men,”but the women managed to stay on their feet andhear the words of the angel. Guess what! Jesus isn’there. He’s been raised from the dead. Now go sharethe good news!

No wonder these women were feeling amixture of emotions! They were frightened by theseincredible supernatural events, but overjoyed thatJesus was alive again. Just imagine their joy when“Jesus met them on their way,” and they were able toembrace him and worship him. What a day!

Now, we too join in the celebration of thisday of all days. Every Easter, we recall theseglorious events, but we do more than justremember. We also rejoice that our Lord is aliveright now, that death and sin have been conqueredforever, that the gates of heaven are open for us.The joy of Easter is not a nostalgic kind of happinessthat only looks backwards. It is instead a call torejoice in the gifts that we can enjoy today and ineternity.

We may not have seen the angel, felt theearthquake, or kissed the feet of the risen Lord, butwe are nonetheless the beneficiaries of thismomentous event. We are an Easter people, apeople in the hands of a loving God whose powercan overcome all the terrible threats and trials ofexistence with the amazing gift of eternal life.

discipleship. May the joy of Christ’sresurrection, the Easter victory over

We recently received our quarterlybilling from the Diocese for our ‘ParishAssessment’ and our ‘Non School Assess-ment’. St. Kilian’s quarterly Parish Asessment is$36,820.00 or $144,829 per year which helpssupport the operations and programs of the Dio-cese; our quarterly Non School Assessment is$45,179 or $180,716.00 annually.

In total $325,536 goes directly to supportvarious Diocesan operations and programs. Yourcontinued generous support of the Parish helps usto meet these bills on a timely basis. On behalf ofFr. Dear Friends:

As we celebrate Easter with our families and our parish families, we ask the Risen Lord for a true resurrection of our beliefthat dramatic missionary growth of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Rockville Centre can and will happen.

The courageous Cardinal Van Thuan, who witnessed powerfully to his Catholic faith while locked for years in a Vietnamprison, described the logic of Christ’s resurrection in our lives in this way: “Jesus cast fire on the earth and He desires theearth to be set ablaze with its brilliant light. You must be the bright flame kindled by apostolic zeal; from your bright lightother torches must be kindled until the whole world is a vast sea of living flame”.

Together, let’s each one of us be instruments of the Risen Lord who start that “vast sea of living flame” here in the Church ofRockville Centre, a vast sea of living flame that spreads throughout the Church in the Northeast, around the country to thewhole world.

Consider Katie, a Senior at an Oyster Bay area public high school. She was recently accepted to Notre Dame University inSouth Bend and will most likely major in Finance. Notre Dame connects incoming students by Social Media so that theycan interact and get to know each other a bit before they ever set foot on campus. Through a series of online conversations,Katie eloquently witnessed in a natural way to the cosmic power of the Catholic Mass streaming through every dimension ofher life and was able to convince in a gentle and effective way an incoming freshman from Wyoming to come back to Mass.

When Katie told me this story, I was so deeply moved that this winning and charismatic young woman had heard PopeFrancis’ call to be a missionary disciple and was setting an example for both her peers and every generation of Catholics ofhow to reach out in faith and in the spirit of the Divine Mercy to others. She was also living the power of Christ’sresurrection by being the instrument of spiritual resurrection in a young man’s life. I can imagine Katie and her classmatefrom Wyoming saying a prayer and lighting a candle together- being part of the “vast sea of living flame” at Notre Dame’smystic Grotto at the center of campus sometime in August when they both arrive on campus.

The story of Katie and her Notre Dame classmate is a moving and inspiring challenge to each one of us to ask people tocome home to their Catholic faith and to invite others to consider the Splendor of Truth and Mercy of our Catholic faith.

This Easter, you and I rediscover the power of Christ’s Resurrection in a new and fresh way. A renewed love andconfidence in the power of the Risen Christ refreshes and strengthens our marriages, our family relationships and everyfriendship we experience in the course of our lives. A rediscovery of the power of Christ’s resurrection helps our familiesbecome part of the “vast sea of living flame” that transforms the world and history.

This Easter 2017 we pray together that the light of the Divine Mercy that streams from the glorified wounds of the RisenLord may touch the wounds of our families and the wounds of poor families, immigrant and refugee families separated bylong distances and upheaval, families living in the midst of war, oppression and persecution, and families struggling withdrug abuse and the opioid crisis.

Know that as your Shepherd and a Successor of the Apostles what an honor it is to be the servant of each one of yourfamilies as together we embrace the Holy Spirit’s call to dramatic missionary growth in the Church of Rockville Centre.

So what does Easter mean to you? The question isnot what do you believe. The question is whatimpact does Easter have on you? How do youractions demonstrate the power of Easter? Whatdoes it mean when you hear that we, the Church,are an Easter people?

You may be saying right now that you have nointention of becoming an evangelist, passing outBibles to all you meet. But I would like to suggestthat you actually have a more powerful way ofevangelizing others: everyday stewardship. Actionsspeak louder than words and the way you liveyour life can be a great testimony to all those youencounter. By acknowledging the gifts you havebeen given, cultivating those so they grow to anincrease, and then sharing them fully with God andwith others in God’s name will give testimony toyour belief that Jesus is alive and seeking arelationship with each of his people.

TIME, TALENT ANDTREASURE AT ST. KILIAN

Next Sunday, April 23rd following all of the Masses, ourmonthly hospitality continues and will be hosted by thefollowing ministries:

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist recognize theBody of Christ in those to whom they serve. They assist inthe distribution of Holy Communion at Mass, and inbringing the Eucharist to the sick and those unable toparticipate in Sunday worship. Pat Hartenstine is thecurrent coordinator of this liturgical ministry.

Lectors help facilitate in the public prayer of the church asa proclaimer of the Word. It is a privilege to bring God’sword to the assembly. Paul Montenero coordinates thisliturgical ministry.

Social Ministry/Outreach who assist those in need. Thisministry is composed of many aspects, including foodpantry, case management and homebound Eucharist. Ourcurrent director is Nina Petersen.

Friendly Visitors volunteers reach out to visit homeboundseniors in the community. This social ministry iscoordinated by JoAnn DiNardo.

We hope you will take some time to stop bynext Sunday in the Blue Room of the ParishCenter. Enjoy some refreshments,fellowship and a picture slide show.

At Easter, we celebrate that our Lord and Savior,Jesus Christ, conquered death, rose from the dead,and remains very much alive. To the world of non-believers: what!? It is quite a big reality toswallow. But for the believer, it is a reality thatinspires us to the point where we find ourselvesconstantly sharing the Gospel with everyone wemeet! Right?

Sacraments

Baptisms are celebrated on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Sundayof the month at 2:00 p.m. in the church. SpanishBaptisms are celebrated on the 4th Sunday of the monthat 2 p.m. Parents are required to participate in oneSacramental Preparation session. These meetings areheld on the first and third Sunday of each month.After attending the 9:30am Mass, parents shouldproceed to the Social Ministry/Outreach ConferenceRoom (across the parking lot) for the BaptismPreparation Class. Godparents are welcome. Please callthe rectory to arrange an interview with a deacon orpriest to register for the preparation session and theBaptism ceremony. Matrimony - Marriage arrangements should be madewith a deacon or priest at least six months before theproposed wedding date. No dates for marriage will begiven over the phone. Anointing of the Sick - The Sacrament of theAnointing of the Sick may be received by any Catholicwho is preparing for surgery, or is of advanced age, oris seriously ill. The sacrament is the Church’s prayerfor health and healing and should not be delayed untilthere is danger of death. Please call the rectory to speakwith a priest. Also, to arrange for Communion to bebrought to the homebound, please call the rectory tohave a priest visit. After the priest visits, arrangementscan be made for a Eucharistic Minister to regularly bringcommunion to the homebound.

Weekdays, drive seniors to local medical appointments using Parish Outreach minivan. AM shifts are approx.8:30-noon and PM shifts are approx. 12:30pm-3:30pm.

• Pantry Workers- requires physical stamina to climb steps, unpack large food deliveries, etc. At this time,we do not have any permanent positions but we need substitutes (which could eventually lead to apermanent slots), especially every other Friday 10am-3pm.

• Spanish Translators- Substitutes needed. Hours are 10am-3pm weekdays; you could be called any dayfrom Monday through Friday, no more than once per week.

• Homebound EMs – if you are a St Kilian EM, would you consider bringing communion to a parishioner athome?

• Friendly Visitors – visit homebound seniors once each week, at a mutually convenient time

CURRENT TWICE-MONTHLY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES• Unloading LI Cares Deliveries- Weekday volunteers are needed to carry heavy boxes from outside our

front door into our pantry basement. Twice-monthly delivery dates vary according to the LI Caresschedule. You will know the date at least a week in advance and you must beavailable to help whenever the delivery arrives, between the hours of 9am and 2pm.

• Van Drivers- see above under Weekly Opportunities

CURRENT MONTHLY VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES• Help at Our Children’s Clothing Boutique. Volunteers are needed to help families shop on the 2nd

Saturday of every month between 9:30am and 12:30pm. Project Closet is located in the St. Kilian schoolbuilding.

• Island Harvest Pick-Ups at Eisenhower Park on Tuesday mornings: requires car with empty trunk andability to carry heavy items back to our pantry. Back-up substitutes needed.

• Cake Bakers –for families who will have a funeral Mass at St. Kilian, bring home-baked goods to localfuneral parlor.

OCCASIONAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES• Give Pantry Tours to Scouts and other Youth Groups: Occasionally, adult leaders and/or parents want to

bring youth to visit our pantry after hours (late-afternoons on weekdays or on weekends). We will trainyou to give a ½ hour “pantry tour” to these groups.

• November Food Drive Chairperson: for major parish-wide event. Requires major organization andcoordination among outside groups and parish volunteers. Will be trained!

LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THEWEEK

Alleluia, the Lord is risen! Mary of Magdala went toJesus’ tomb and found that it was empty. She wasthe first witness of the Resurrection and announcedthe empty tomb to other disciples. We are called tobe witnesses too. Can you imagine the joy thedisciples experienced when they realized that Jesuswas actually raised from the dead? Sometimes ourfaith in the Resurrection can run lukewarm. Wedon’t fully doubt that Jesus was raised but we aren’tfully convinced either. Once we become convincedour lives, no matter where our roads take us, willautomatically radiate with joy. Like Mary, we arecalled to then share that joy with others so that theymay realize that it is the Lord and come to believe.

Has notado que las mujeres de este pasaje delEvangelio no tienen nombre. ¿Por qué será? Loimaginas. Es sencillamente porque esas mujeres podemosser tu y yo, hombre y mujer a los que se aparece elSeñor. Este día de Resurrección, no debemos ser simplesespectadores. Este día salimos de nuestra tumba delmiedo. Resucitar debe ser una experiencia personal decada cristiano. Vivir como personas resucitadas implicatransformar la manera vieja de vivir por una nueva,perfumada y llena de Cristo resucitado. Por esa razóncompletamos nuestra Cuaresma, por lo mismo nosreconciliamos con nosotros mismos, con la familia, con lacomunidad y muy especialmente con Dios. San Pablo loexplica así: “Lo mismo ustedes, considérense muertos alpecado y vivos para Dios en Cristo Jesús” (Rom 6, 11).¡Felices Pascuas de Resurrección!
