Women’s retreat
Sacred Heart Spirituality Center will hold its Women’s Retreat the weekend of June 10-12, 2016. The theme for this retreat is: “Live Mercy!” It will focus on how God’s abundant and unconditional Mercy towards us calls forth a gospel response to live mercy ever deeper in our own lives. A weekend experience creates a special bond and climate among the retreatants and allows the time to relax and recharge. However, if someone is unable to make the entire weekend, there is the possibility of coming on Saturday only. Please call 973-383-2620 or email [email protected] for more information.
The registration form is on the website at : sacredheartspiritualitycenter.org.
WEEKDAY MASSES

There will no longer be an 8:00 am Mass on Mondays or Tuesdays.
A tribute to my brother priest, Father Michael Burke
It was a Saturday, May 15, 1976 when Deacon Michael Burke laid on the floor of the Cathedral of Saint John in Paterson, New Jersey as The Most Reverend Bishop Lawrence Bernard Brennan Casey placed his hands on his head and anointed the palms of his hands with Chrism as he continued the tradition of ordaining priests in the Name of the Catholic Church and in the person of Jesus Christ.
After ordination, Father Burke went on to further studies and received his Masters in Sacred Theology and then earning a law degree where he received his “Juris Doctor” (JD) Degree. At the invitation of Bishop Frank Rodimer (the successor to bishop Casey) Father Burke was invited to work in the chancery office assisting the diocese in helping assure immigrant visas to priests, deacons, seminarians and the faithful. It was here that Father Michael fell in love with the poor.
On the Feast of Pentecost, almost to the same exact hour of the same day, with Bishop Rodimer present, Father Michael celebrated forty years a priest in the Diocese of Paterson at Saint Brendan Church in Clifton, where he presently resides, with many parishioners and brother priests throughout the diocese.
Father Michael is not your “typical” priest and that is probably why he has become such a great friend, confidant and source of many laughs throughout my own tenure in the diocese. Most recently, Father has been visiting Newton to celebrate the Sunday evening Masses and from time to time assisted with daily Mass when I have not been able. In this short period of time, Father Michael has endeared himself to so many of the faithful here in Newton. His unique and reverent style of celebrating Mass where he is not afraid to speak about his favorite subject, himself, coupled with his world travels and unique experience of being a priest and an attorney, all make him the lovable priest, man and friend that he has become to so many.
Most recently, Father Michael was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and even after the misdiagnosis of it not being serious, Father received this sad news with great faith and hope. He continues to have treatments and we continue to fervently pray for his complete and quick recovery.
But today, the Church, the diocese, Saint Brendan Church, Saint Joseph Church and all of the people of God, take few moments to thank Almighty God that, by the Priesthood of His Only Begotten Son, Michael Burke was sent into our lives to remind us of our humanity, our frailty and one aspect of our lives that we must never forget, and that is our sense of humor.
I personally give thanks the Lord for the gift of Father Michael Burke, for his fraternal and sacramental support while I was at Our Lady of the Valley and Holy Cross Churches in Wayne and now almost sixty miles away in Sussex County, Father Michael continues to offer his priestly services to me his brother priest and to you, the People of God.
I was once told that Archbishop Fulton Sheen said you should always tell your priests that you love them, so Father Michael on behalf of the People of God here in Newton and the many fami-lies and friends that your dual ministry as priest and legal counselor have touched, I say “I love you” and I thank you for your friendship, your fraternal support and for the many times you make me laugh. “Ad multos annos.”
