CHURCH RENOVATION WORK –
The renovation work in the church is under-
way. Dusting the ceiling beams and fans
has been accomplished. The painting of the
walls in the nave has begun. Work in the
sanctuary will commence as well as in the
choir loft. The refinishing of the floor is
also underway.
As a result of all this work the Masses will be celebrated in
Hayes Hall. I am hoping we can be back in the church for Au-
gust 1st but this is subject to how quickly this work can be done.
I appreciate your patience as we do the loving labor of caring
for our church.
I am counting on your generosity to support the work which is
being done in the Lord’s House. I ask you to participate in the
appeal to fund the renovation and pray that the Lord will richly
bless you for the offering you make in His Name.
Our renovation fund total is currently $63,430.00

Today we observe the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time as we gather to celebrate the Lord’s Day. The Old Testa-
ment and the Gospel readings present us with the themes of hospitality and attentiveness. In the first reading
we find Abraham and Sarah welcoming three mysterious strangers. The elderly couple rushes to provide them
with food and drink before they continue on their journey. After serving the strangers the couple makes time
to converse with them and be attentive to them. Abraham sits under a tree to listen to them, and what he hears
changes not only his life, but the course of history. The strangers reveal that the elderly couple will conceive and a son will be
born to them. This promise will mean that descendants will spring forth from these two old people: “Therefore from one man,
and him as good as dead, were born descendants as many as the stars of heaven and as the innumerable grains of sand by the
seashore.” (Hebrews 11:12) These innumerable children are the people of faith.
The Gospel passage tells us of the hospitality which is offered to the Lord Jesus in the Bethany home of Martha, Mary and Laza-
rus. Bible commentaries will point out that this story is located in Luke’s Gospel following the parable of the Good Samaritan
(last Sunday’s Gospel) and the story of Jesus teaching the “Our Father” to His disciples (next Sunday’s Gospel), both found in
chapter 9. The Evangelist Luke is telling us that Jesus wants those who serve to do so in His name and those who pray to pray in
such a way that it leads them to do God’s will “on earth as it is in heaven.”
We need to be both Martha and Mary, serving others in Jesus Name but also spending prayerful time with Jesus so as to listen to
Him speaking to our hearts. Our time with Jesus in public worship and personal prayer is to “choose the better part” so that we
can be strengthened and guided in our service to one another. Being “Martha” without “Mary” will only bring us to spiritual
burnout. Staying close to Jesus is the posture for Christians.
This Sunday and next Sunday we will celebrate the Holy Masses in Hayes Hall due to the renovation work being done in the
church. I am hoping that by Sunday, July 31st we will be in the church but that is not certain. I know that this is a bit of an incon-
venience but it is something we have to bear if we want our church to be renewed.
I am praying that the renovation work proceeds without a hitch. Bishop Serratelli called me last week and said that he would like
to celebrate the 12:15 p.m. Mass in our church on Sunday, August 14th. I told the Bishop that we welcome him and are always
honored to have him in our house. Having the Bishop with us is like having one of the Apostles with us, for he is our beloved
father and shepherd!
In closing I ask you to consider making a donation to our church renovation fund. The work being done to maintain and beautify
the church is only possible because of the love and generosity of the faithful. Let us continue to love the Lord’s House, our spiri-
tual home!
God bless you!
Fr. Zig
580-St. Cecilia
St. Mary, whom Jesus converted, and who witnessed His last moments with Mary, His Mother, and St. John, was called Magdalene from the town of Magdala in Galilee. Clement of Alexandria and others identify here with the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears. Others regard her as Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus. She followed Jesus with other devout women dur-ing His Public Life. After His Resurrection, Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene and then to
His Apostles.
It is an ancient tradition in Provence, France, that St. Mary Magdalene or Mary the sister of Laza-rus, together with Lazarus, Martha and some other disciples of our Lord, being expelled by the Jews, put to sea and landed at Marseilles; and that St. Lazarus became the first Bishop of that See.
The feast of St. Mary Magdalene is celebrated by the Greeks as well as the Latins on this date. However, in the in-structions given with the latest edition of the Roman Calendar, the Latin church has stipulated that the feast is solely that of the woman to whom Christ appeared and not that of the sister of Lazarus or the penitent woman.
PRAYER: God, it was to St. Mary Magdalene before all others that Your Son committed the message of Easter joy. Through her intercession may we one day contemplate Him reigning in glory. Amen
