SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM A Pre-Baptismal Class is held the third Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the parish office. No pre-registration required. Both parents are encouraged to attend the class before the birth of the baby. The Sacrament of Baptism is administered weekly at the 12:15 pm Mass and a Baptis-mal Ceremony at 1:30 pm.

FROM THE PASTOR: I would like to share with you

some information which was recently conveyed to me by the

Rockaway Borough Police Department. Please be advised

that the turning of Church Street into a ONE WAY

STREET is done only for Saturday from 4-9 pm and Sunday

from 6:30 am—1:30 pm. This is the only time the ordinance

allows for the ONE WAY STREET. I have been in dialogue

with the police department to add additional days (holy days,

Ash Wednesday, Christmas, etc.) to the ordinance since I am

regularly informed by parishioners and visitors to our church

regarding the side swiping of cars resulting in body damage

and side mirrors being destroyed. Church Street is a county

road and any adjustment to the ordinance must be done on

the county level. I am pursing this matter on the county

level! I advise you to please use caution as you park on

Church Street. Please do not park in the ONE WAY

STREET fashion during the week since the one way is only

enforced on Saturday and Sunday at the above stated times.

In addition, I invite you, especially the elderly, to take ad-

vantage of the parking spots near the rectory which have the

signs “Clergy Parking Only.” These are available for you

to use. Please obey all traffic and parking regulations, as

well as being courteous as you enter and leave our church

property. I appreciate your cooperation!

ATTENTION MEN – A men’s group called FATHERS

OF ST. JOSEPH will be meeting every other Saturday

morning at 5:30 a.m. in the St. Cecilia Office Building.

The Fathers of St. Joseph gatherings are not so much

meetings as they are mini retreats, whose aim is to com-

municate the spirituality of fatherhood in a manner that

encourages and inspires fathers to embrace, engage and –

by the power of the Holy Spirit – sanctify their vocation.

MASSES BEING OFFERED—Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish on

East Main Street is offering the following Masses each month:

POLISH MASS on the second Sunday of every month at 11:30

a.m. and LATIN MASS IN THE EXTRAORDINARY FORM

The Feminine Genius Project: A prayer and discussion

ministry for mothers. We will meet every first and third

Saturday morning (6:30—8:00 am) in the St. Cecilia par-

ish office for grace & coffee. We hope that this gives

each of us the spiritual recharge we need through prayer,

group discussion, and time with Christ in the Blessed Sac-

rament in order to serve our families, our communities,

and our Lord Jesus better. This group serves mothers

with school-aged children. Babysitting is not provided.

This time of prayer, reflection, and fellowship is reserved

for mothers only.

About the New Jersey Safe Haven Law:

Why are states offering Safe Haven Laws? The purpose of Safe Haven is to

protect unwanted babies from being hurt or killed because they were aban-

doned. You may have heard tragic stories of babies left in dumpsters or public toilets. The parents who committed these acts may have been under severe

emotional distress. The mothers may have hidden their pregnancies, fearful of

what would happen if their families found out. Because they were afraid and had nowhere to turn for help, they abandoned their babies.

Abandoning a baby puts the child in extreme danger. Too often, it results in

the child's death. It is also illegal, with severe consequences. But with Safe Haven, this tragedy doesn't ever have to happen again.

In New Jersey, no one ever has to abandon a child again.

THURSDAY FAITH FORMATION—The adult

faith formation class which meets on Thursday

evening in Hayes Hall at 7:00 pm will not meet in

July and August but resume following Labor Day.

DOYLESTOWN SHRINE CELEBRATION – The

coronation of the Icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa

will take place at the Doylestown shrine on Sunday,

August 25th at the 12:30 pm Mass celebrated by the

Most Reverend Charles Chaput, Archbishop of Phila-

delphia. The icon was blessed by Saint John Paul II.

Our Holy Father, Pope Francis recently blessed the

crown which will be used at the August ceremony. On

the occasion of the coronation, Pope Francis has

granted all pilgrims who visit the shrine until the end of

October a plenary indulgence under the usual condi-

tions. The Pauline Fathers who staff the shrine invite

everyone to prepare spiritually for this blessed occasion

through novenas, personal prayers, night vigil prayers

at the shrine, and reception of the sacrament of pen-

ST. MARY, whom Jesus converted, and who witnessed His last moments with Mary, His

Mother, and St. John, was called Magdalene from the town of Magdala in Galilee. Clement

of Alexandria and others identify her with the woman who washed Jesus’ feet with her tears.

Others regard her as Mary, the Sister of Martha and Lazarus. She followed Jesus with other

devout women during His Public Life. After His Resurrection, Jesus appeared first to Mary

Magdalene and then to His Apostles.

It is an ancient tradition in Provence, France, that St. Mary Magdalene or Mary the sister of

Lazarus, together with Lazarus, Martha, and some other disciples of our Lord, being expelled

by the Jews, put to sea and landed at Marseilles; and that St. Lazarus became the first Bishop

of that See.

The feast of St. Mary Magdalene is celebrated by the Greeks as well as the Latins on this

date. However, in the instructions given with the latest edition of the Roman Calendar, the

Latin Church has stipulated that the feast is solely that of the woman to whom Christ ap-

peared and not that of the sister of Lazarus or the penitent woman.

PRAYER God, it was to St. Mary Magdalene before all others that Your Son committed the message of Easter joy. Through

her intercession may we one day contemplate Him reigning in glory. Amen

ST. MARY MAGDALENE July 22

My dear parishioners,

Today we observe the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Gospel reading for this Sunday speaks of Jesus telling the parable

of the Good Samaritan. This beloved story tells of the honorable conduct of the Samaritan who went out of his way to help a

Jew who was the victim of a crime. The compassion and generosity of the unnamed Samaritan is saluted by the Lord as the

proper manner disciples are to model as a testimony of their love for God. Love for God is translated into the love one shows

to another, and especially to someone in need.

Today’s secular society very much endorses “looking the other way” when it comes to the needy and those who are in trou-

ble. Christ calls us to respond differently by taking the actions of the Good Samaritan as our own. Turning a blind eye to

someone in need is like a slap to the face of God! All of us are challenged to show compassion and mercy so that the very

presence of God may shine forth in a world which can at times seem very dark.

Jesus calls us every day, every time, to be a Good Samaritan. Our training for this role is found in the development of our

spiritual life. Our daily prayers, active sacramental participation and ongoing faith formation ready us for this task. Parents

must be good models to their children showing them and encouraging them in works of service which help to alleviate the

sufferings of others. The Good Samaritan experiences a joy in knowing that the good work done for another is a sacrifice

pleasing to God. When parents relinquish their duty in forming their children in the virtues Christ beckons us to acquire, chil-

dren become greedy and self-serving thus bringing more darkness into the world. Taking time to visit the sick and the elderly;

showing compassion to someone in grief or discouragement; giving financial assistance to someone in need is acting in the

manner of the Good Samaritan. Today in the Gospel the Lord Jesus says to us, “Go and do likewise.”

The Church has taken the parable of the Good Samaritan to heart from its very inception. The Catholic Church is the LARG-

EST PROVIDER of health care in the world, of offering shelter and food for those who are in need. The Church is able to do

so because of YOU! Your financial support allows the Church to be the GOOD SAMARITAN showing compassion and as-

sistance to the suffering. Your generosity and participation in appeals throughout the year make good things possible – you

are a GOOD SAMARITAN!
