Saint Bernard Church
Serving God’s People for 57 Years 1961-2018
All are Welcome Here! This is your home and we are your family!
Jesus provides a means by which all people, despite their failings, may return to God. The Church sees Mary as a significant link in the process from humanity’s turn from the sin of Adam and Eve to the grace of Jesus. In order for God to become human, a sacred vessel was required-Mary. She was without original sin of all other humans. Today the Church celebrates the fact that Mary was uniquely open to God’s grace because of this special status. Mary says yes to the angel’s message of her role in salvation, despite the lack of understanding. In so doing, she changed the whole world. She made salvation possible for all of the people who would come after her by bringing Jesus to us. We can become people of yes like Mary by giving thanks that we have a role model like Mary who said yes, and we try to imitate her. We also rejoice in knowing that because of Jesus’ death and Resurrection, God’s grace overcomes all our weaknesses, and even our no becomes a yes. God has provided a plan for our redemption, despite our sins and failings. He has laid it out clearly in the persons of Mary and Jesus. We can rightly call Mary a miracle. The Gospel points out another miracle: the pregnancy of Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, despite her advanced age. This solemnity encourages us to believe in miracles. A miracle testifies to God’s power and grace over human limitations and sin.
