JULY 28, 2019 2 SAINT BERNARD
This version from Luke’s account of the Gospel is a shorter version of the same prayer that we know today; it is also a shorter version of a similar prayer that Jesus shares with his disciples during the Sermon on the Mount. This teaching on prayer takes place in the sixth chapter of Matthew’s account of the Gospel. It still includes some of the same key features as the prayer found in Matthew. The prayer has elements of honoring the Father’s holiness, a call for the coming of the kingdom, a request for daily sustenance, forgiveness of sins, and a request for being delivered from the final trial. This provides a guide for how we as disciples of Jesus are to pray. This Gospel reading then moves into a second teaching about prayer from Jesus. He talks about the importance of persistence in prayer. He paints a picture of a person going to the house of a friend, late at night, and requesting some bread to share with another friend who has arrived after a long journey. This initial request is refused because the neighbor from whom some bread is being requested says that it is too late and their house is already locked up. Friendship is not enough for the homeowner to get up and share some bread. But notice what happens. The one who is requesting the bread ends up getting what he needs because he is persistent. So too should we be with our prayer. We should be persistent in praying, for if we remain steadfast in praying to God, he will send the Holy Spirit in response to our requests.

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults The Rite of Christian Initiation of
Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process by which a person prepares to become a member
of the Roman Catholic Church. The process is one of inquiry,
evangelization, prayer, study and conversion, leading to one’s entrance
into the church through Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucharist. RCIA
welcomes the unbaptized as well as those baptized in other Christian
traditions. RCIA also welcomes those who have been baptized Catholic but who have not completed their
sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation.
Anyone who is interested in participating in this program is asked to call the Rectory now and speak
to Deacon Frank.

Operation Backpack
Think it’s too early to think about back-to-school? Not for Operation Backpack! Thousands of school-age children in New York City are homeless and one of the
most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it can have on a child's education. Frequent school transfers and the stigma associated with living in a shel-
ter add up to great hardship for these children, but thanks to the overwhelming generosity of individuals like you, more than 19,400 of them began the last school year with brand new, filled backpacks! They felt confident and fit in
effortlessly with their classmates! Last year, Operation Backpack was a record-breaking success and is now gearing up for September 2019.
Saint Bernard Parish will be participating this year to help thousands of homeless children on their first day of classes.
We will have a collection box in the vestibule of the Church in the coming weeks. Won’t you please consider donating a new backpack and/or school supplies to help these children? Due to the huge
turnover in the shelter system, the children who received last year are more than likely not there now. We will be collecting through the end of July.
