Our Team Dear Readers,Happy New Year to all our Readers, Advertisers and Friends! May your

2015 be filled with good health, happiness and prosperity. As we transition out of the old and into the new, many of us are setting resolutions of one kind

or another. This year my co-worker, Margot, came up with a twist on the whole resolution thing. She’s created a ‘2015 Bucket List.’ I LOVE it! Rather than making

the same old resolutions that we make every year, like eating better, exercising more, or to be more organized (the stuff we resolve to do every day); perhaps we can make

our goals less broad and replace them with something more specific and realistic, so that we’ll actually follow them through. So far I have added three items onto my list: try a new physical fitness activity, travel with my kids to a new destination and take part in one of our ‘Fun Runs’ listed in Sports & Activities Directory.

So what’s on your 2015 Bucket List? For ideas or inspiration, take a look through our directory pages. We make it easy to find a sport, activity, event or program that fits your family’s needs. No need to sit for hours at the computer researching, we’ve done all that for you so it’s all right here in one place. Perhaps your family will participate in a charitable event, such as a 5K run or walk, and reap the benefits of health while teaching your kids important values. Looking for something to do on the weekend? Take a look in our events section to find great happenings such as The Town of Davie’s 77th Annual Orange Blossom Festival and Parade. Know someone who deserves a little more ‘ME TIME?’ Check out ME SPA in Pembroke Gardens for the ultimate pampering for you or someone special.

To further your access to the resources we offer, Sports & Activities Directory has just celebrated a year of having our App for Smartphones! Not only are we the #1 resource magazine for your area, we have moved into the next generation. We now offer all of the same great information and more, right at your fingertips. If you haven’t already done so, I urge you to download this useful tool. It’s great to have on hand! Feel free to send us an email from the app with comments or suggestions; this is your magazine and we do listen! So as you flip the pages of this issue or browse though our App’s photo gallery,

look out for people you might know. We are out at events all year long gathering photos of residents enjoying life in our community. See how many people you recognize! You never know who you might find, it could even be you!

Happy New Year!

My very best to you,

Nikki ReadingPublisher

Happy New Year Davie Residents! There are several terrific Town of Davie recreation programs and events inside the Sports &

Activities Directory. However, before you read it, let me take a moment to mention two recent events that are indicative of why the Town of Davie is a great place to live, work, play and learn!

First, our annual Veterans Day event was a beautiful tribute to our heroes of the Armed Forces, and included a special tribute by Richie Supa. We also honored Bill Leibowitz for his unselfish commitment

to our veterans. He was presented a certificate recognizing the dedication of his property, which is adjacent to the park, to the town for an expansion project that was completed in time for Veterans Day. I also dedicated the new fountain, which was one of Bill’s dreams for the park. When you go at night, it is

lit with red, white and blue spotlights and presents an awesome vision of the park and lake.

Second, a national publication, American City and County Magazine, has selected our Town Administrator, Richard Lemack, as the best in the nation. After a lengthy written process culminating in a 30-minute oral presentation by our HR Director, Stacey Hipsman, Mr. Lemack was named Municipal Administrator of the YEAR.

The competition included entries from all over the country. We have reason to celebrate and be proud of the wonderful team that we have in Davie. Congratulations, Mr. Lemack. You have taken our Town to a new level!

Now, I want to encourage you to take a close look at the programs and events offered by the Town’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts over the next three months. Inside you will find information on youth sports, swimming, fitness, special events and recreational activities for youth through senior adults. Let me highlight a number of Town events that you will not want to miss.

On January 18th, the Town of Davie is proud to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a Picnic Celebration at Potter Park, located at 4300 SW 57th Terrace. This year’s event will run from 1:00pm to 4:00pm, including a guest speaker, a student poetry contest, entertainment, a petting zoo, and a number of other activities for youth such as bounce houses and arts and crafts. Food and refreshments will also be available. This is always a great event so come join us!

Don’t miss the Town’s 78th Annual Orange Blossom Festival, Parade and Rodeo scheduled for Friday, February 27th through Sunday, March 1st, 2015. Orange Blossom is my favorite event in the town. I have participated in one way or another since 1974 when I rode my horse, Tanya Lee, in the parade. The parade always brings back fond memories. Everyone should attend and start building memories for your families. This year’s parade will highlight “Education is Blossoming in Davie” with floats entered by local Davie schools and colleges along with over 100 other parade entries, such as several marching bands.

This fantastic three-day event features an outdoor concert at the Old Davie School on Friday night, starting at 6:30pm. On Saturday, the community parade kicks off at 10:00am traveling south on Davie Road from SW 39 St. to Orange Drive. After the parade, stay on the grounds of Town Hall for an all-day festival consisting of musical performances, community events and exhibits, food vendors, arts and crafts vendors. The day’s activities end with the “world class” Heritage Championship Rodeo starting at 7:30pm. On Sunday, the festival continues throughout the morning and afternoon along with the Championship Rodeo Finals that start at 2:00pm. If you love community festivals combined with a real Rodeo involving real cowboys and cowgirls, bull riding, bare back riding, cattle wrestling, barrel races and team cattle roping, then join

me and 15,000 other participates for a great weekend in Cowboy Town!

If golfing is your passion, sign up for the Town’s 3rd Annual James B. Pirtle Memorial Golf Tournament being held on Friday, February 27th. The tournament will take place on Friday morning

with a start time of 8:30am. If you’re interested, register early by calling the Davie Golf and Country Club at (954) 797-4653. The tournament entry fee includes breakfast, lunch, and a tournament polo shirt. In addition there will be lots of raffle prizes and a silent auction, which is new this year. Net proceeds from the tournament always go toward funding our annual summer golf camp for youth.

Finally, I want to encourage you to attend the next performance of the Actors Community Theatre (ACT), which will be held this coming February. They will be performing Arsenic and Old Lace, written by Joseph Kesseiring. This play is a beloved American classic and is a rollicking dark comedy about a Brooklyn family of loveable and kooky homicidal maniacs. This show first opened on Broadway in 1941 with Cary Grant and ran for 1,444 performances. If you love community theatre, don’t miss ACT’s next performance.

For more information on these events and other programs listed inside, you can always call (954) 327-3941.

As always, see you in the Parks

Hello, I’m Greg Ross, your Cooper City Mayor. The time has come again to review and inform you of events and activities

occurring in Cooper City, “Someplace Special.”

I’d like to begin with extending congratulations to our two returning Commission members. Commissioner Lisa Mallozzi and Commissioner John Sims were re-elected

last November and will be returning to office for their third and final terms. Cooper City elected officials can serve up to three, four-year terms. A Swearing-In Ceremony,

attended by family and friends, was conducted at City Hall on November 25th, 2014 to install both Commissioners to their respective elected positions.

I am happy to announce a new addition to Cooper City’s recreational program, “The Mayor’s Chess Challenge.” Educators and community leaders have made a commitment to expand chess as a means of improving educational outcomes for the children of Broward County. The National Scholastic Chess Foundation is working with local partners to establish sustainable in school and after school chess programs. Mayors throughout Broward County have elected to conduct the Mayor’s Chess Challenge to help develop student’s self-esteem and critical thinking skills. Chess crosses age and cultural boundaries, thereby providing another recreational activity for both children and adults alike. Most importantly, chess can be a tool to build stronger family units. Whether you are a seasoned chess player or have never played and are interested in learning the game, you are welcome to attend. Instructors will be on site to assist beginners. Please watch the City’s Website www.coopercityFL.org for dates and times this monthly event will occur. For additional information, you can also contact the Community Center at (954) 434-4300 Ext. #233.

Cooper City will be sponsoring its first complementary Senior Lifestyle Expo. The City’s Senior Citizens Advisory Board has been working diligently with the Recreation Department to showcase activities, resources, projects and services that will add to your lifestyle. Stop by the Expo on Friday, January 9th, 2015 at the Community Center between the hours of 9:30am – 1:30pm. At that time, you will have the opportunity to meet program activity instructors, learn about City services, gather informative information from our vendors on medical services, retirement opportunities, wellness and more! Complimentary refreshments will be available to all attendees. For further information, including booth and sponsorship opportunities, call (954) 434-4300 Ext. #255.

The Father-Son Adventure Night has been scheduled for Friday, January 23rd from 6:30pm – 9:30pm at the Community Center. This Cooper City resident event is open to K-5th grade children. Tickets are $12 per person and $10 per additional

son. Join your friends and neighbors for dinner and activities. For ticket information, contact the Community Center at (954) 434-4300 Ext. #233.

As your Mayor, I am honored to conduct the Say “I Do Again” Marriage Vow Renewal event for interested Cooper City couples. Each couple will renew their vows in a romantic group ceremony and receive a Marriage Renewal Certificate. Refreshments will be provided for family and friends attending the ceremony. This special event will be held at City Hall on Thursday, February 12th at 6:30pm. The charge is $5 per couple. Tickets and information can be obtained by contacting the Community Center at (954) 434-4300 Ext #233.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for allowing me the honor of serving as your Mayor and wish everyone a happy and healthy 2015!

Greg RossMayor

Support our local Irish Community while enjoying a fun filled day celebrating the legendary life of Saint Patrick.

Born in the fifth century, Saint Patrick was kidnapped from Britain at the young age of sixteen and brought to Ireland as a slave. Saint Patrick, whose life was somewhat mythological, was best known for bringing Christianity to Ireland and for explaining the Holy Trinity using a Shamrock or a “Three Leaf Clover” as we refer to it in the United States. He is also credited for driving the snakes from Ireland which is believed by most to mean that he put an end to the pagan practice of worshipping serpents. Saint Patrick became known as the Patron Saint and National Apostle of Ireland.

It was around the ninth or tenth century that the Irish began celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day on March 17th, the day of Saint Patrick’s death. Surprisingly, the first St. Patrick’s Day Parade took place, not in Ireland, but in the United States on March 17, 1762 when a group of Irish soldiers enlisted in the English military, marched through New York City honoring the life of Saint Patrick. As a result, Saint Patrick’s Day was born and now more than 100 Saint Patrick’s Day parades occur across the United States annually. One of those parades will be held in Hollywood, Florida on Sunday, March 9, 2014 from noon to 6:00 P.M.

Join Grand Marshal, Patrick Utter, Owner of Shenanigans Pub, and thousands of residents and visitors, at this free, family-friendly event put on by the Hibernians of Hollywood, in partnership with the City of Hollywood. The day’s entertainment

includes a traditional float parade, Irish merchandise, live music featuring the U2 tribute band UV, Irish food and beverages, and children’s activities. Festival activities can be found on Hollywood Boulevard & Harrison Street.

The Hibernians, a 501c3 Community Organization was re-established in 2010 for the purpose of raising funds for downtown Hollywood’s annual cultural event and Irish Festival. Directors Mike Saffron, John Lipca, and Mark Rowe work hard to ensure that this popular festival remains a desirable attraction for residents and non-residents alike. The Hibernians are looking for local businesses that would like to act as sponsors for the event.

Use this opportunity to present your business to the anticipated 12,000+ visitors. Choose from various sponsorships including: Shamrock, Leprechaun, Pot of Gold or the Magic of the Emerald Isle Sponsorship. All sponsorships offer a different level of logo, name recognition and advertisements depending on which one you choose. Prices range from $1,000 to $5,000. For detailed sponsorship information email: [email protected] or contact Mike Saffran at (954) 658-3894. To become a sponsor, or to make a donation, please send checks to the Hibernians of Hollywood, 421 S. 21st Avenue, Hollywood, Florida 33020.

Put your fantasies to rest as you don your craziest Irish attire or brush the dust off that green Leprechaun suit beckoning from your closet and come celebrate the legendary life of Saint Patrick with your friends, neighbors and fellow Irishmen!

May luck be our companionMay friends stand by our sideMay history remind us allOf Ireland’s faith and pride.May God bless us with happinessMay love and faith abide.*Irish Blessing

The Kendra’s Kisses Foundation 7th Annual Memorial 5K (3.1 miles) will take place on March 22, 2015 at Markham Park in Sunrise, FL at 7:30am. All proceeds from the race will benefit Kendra’s Kisses, the Kendra Vermont Foundation. This foundation was established in May 2007 after Marc and Christy Vermont’s four-year-old daughter Kendra passed away from a malignant brain tumor. Kendra was initially treated at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, FL and then, after her cancer was found to be more advanced than originally diagnosed, they went to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee.

St. Jude pays for the costs involved with treatments, but there are many other costs that are not covered. “The world does not put everything on hold when you are dealt the blow of childhood cancer. Bills still need to be paid and that is where Kendra’s Kisses steps in with its grant program”, says Marc who works for Hallandale Beach Fire Rescue. I got the idea to do a 5K fundraiser for Kendra’s Kisses after participating in races supporting St. Jude. I know there is a great running community in South Florida and they are more than eager to help out a great cause. Making this event a run and walk allows everyone to come out and have a good time, raise money, and get some free goodies,” says

Marc. Medals are awarded to the top three finishers in several categories and all paid participants are given a custom lapel pin, a commemorative moisture control t-shirt and a sling bag. Trophies are also awarded to the overall winners. Every year, a special presentation is awarded to a child who is currently battling cancer. “It is wonderful to be able to make an immediate impact in these children’s lives,” says Christy, a nail technician in Hollywood. “During our time in need, the South Florida community pulled together for us so that we could spend every day with Kendra and we did not have to worry about where our mortgage payment was coming from,” said Christy. Marc and Christy are the President and Vice President of Kendra’s Kisses and work part time at it raising $20,000 a year through events such as this 5K race.

Kendra’s Kisses is a charitable, non-profit organization dedicated to providing assistance in the form of social, emotional, and financial support to families and caregivers in need when a child or children of that family is diagnosed with a life threatening illness. More information can be found on their website at www.kendraskisses.org and follow along on Facebook. If you would like to make a donation or volunteer, you may do so on the website.

In spring 2003, 16-year-old Rebecca Kirtman initiated a dress drive at Nova High School for needy girls in South Florida. She collected 250 prom dresses and numerous accessories so that they could attend their high school proms in style. A few months later, on August 20, Rebecca tragically passed away in an automobile accident. Sophomore Rachel Dagen recently launched a Becca’s Closet club at Western High School to help carry on her legacy.

Rebecca’s mother, Pam Kirtman, started Becca’s Closet soon after her death. The nonprofit organization donates formal dresses to high school girls with financial needs who otherwise would not be able to attend their schools’ military balls, homecomings and proms. Dresses have to be less than five years old and can be any size or style. Becca’s Closet also awards scholarships to deserving high school students. There are currently clubs in nearly every state in the nation.

Rachel, who enjoys fashion and shopping, says that she was inspired by Rebecca’s story. “I wanted to start the club at my school,” said Rachel. “As soon as I heard about Rebecca, I knew that I had found the perfect one. It is a great way to spend time doing something I love for a wonderful cause. I want to make sure that all girls have an opportunity to experience what it is like to feel special

in a dress at their homecomings and proms. Every girl deserves that.”

In spring 2014, Rachel got approval from school administrators to form the club. One of her favorite teachers, Kara Mullins, agreed to be the sponsor. She developed a plan and started the club at Western this year.

There are currently 30 members who have participated in a variety of school wide fundraisers. In October, they held their first dress drive and received over 100 donations. After cleaning out her closet, Rachel was able to contribute ten of her own. “These were dresses that I don’t wear,” said Rachel. “They were just hanging in my closet. Now ten girls can benefit from them. It is a beautiful thing to make such a difference with such a simple gesture.”

Rachel says that she and the other club members are looking forward to volunteering at the Becca’s Closet collection site. “I am excited to help the girls pick out the perfect dress for the occasion,” said Rachel.

Rachel is a straight “A” student and very involved at her school. She is member of SGA and Interact. She is on the debate team and the online editor for her school newspaper. She plans to study business and attend law school.

ILY H

EA

LTH

By Heather Frey

There probably isn’t a person alive who doesn’t want super fi tness, health, and lets face it, a super bod. But to focus on just weight loss misses the big picture, YOUR big picture. You don’t just want to lose weight, you want a tight, healthy, lean body and that takes some strategy and push. Just losing weight doesn’t necessarily teach you how to eat or move and without knowing that, you won’t be able to sustain or maintain your weight loss in the long run. To tighten your body, you have to CHANGE, and not just what you eat, but when you eat, how much you eat, and how you eat.

This fi rst week you’ll do a lot of thinking. Your body isn’t going to change unless you put your mind into it. You have to decide without a doubt that you are done feeling bad about yourself, done living in a body you don’t recognize, done feeling sick and done feeling sad. Once you decide that, then it’s just a matter of replacing old thought patterns with new lifting thoughts that will take you exactly where you want to go.

Still only kinda sorta into it? Going through the motions will only get you so far. Your mind will want to get back to what’s comfy and easy so you have to be strong and determined enough to stand up to it! And with the right information, motivation and inspiration, you can do this! The idea is that you’ll learn to live forward. You’ll learn how to think yourself out of temptation, strategize

your way out of cravings, and motivate yourself to keep going. You’re mantra should be, “I will not go backwards, only forwards.” Keep your mind forward and your body will follow.Youwillalso:• Begin logging everything you eat. Buy yourself a beautiful journal or notebook and

make this your Change Challenge, or Life Shifting notebook.• Start pinpointing your problem spots as they *occur* so you can become aware of when

and why you’re eating. This includes cravings and stress eating.• Moving with purpose. It doesn’t have to be organized exercise to start, but you will make

a point to move more. Parking as far away from the store as possible and walking counts; mopping with vigor counts; walking the long way instead of the short way counts.

The idea is to begin thinking about your body and how moving makes you feel.AREYOUIN?Be tired of starting over and over. Make this your last time.

Doing things the right way is so much faster than doing it the wrong way. Don’t worry how long it will take, just go. Commit. This isn’t nearly as hard as you think. There will be parts that you’ll struggle with and parts that you won’t, but the whole process will be worth every bit of your effort.

By Michelle McKay & Sheri Wilcox

A new year comes with resolutions. And lots of them. This is it! This is the year you are going to start fresh and get it all together! Go to the gym, buy organic food, make healthier choices for your family, pay off the credit cards, lose those extra ten pounds, volunteer in school more, follow your passion and start your own business; the list is endless on January 1st. Unfortunately, by February most families are eating take-out, feeling overwhelmed, back into their old patterns and those lofty goals are but a memory. Maybe next year, right?

We get you. We all want to be the perfect parent, have the perfect job and make the healthiest choices. We wanted to have it all together, but it used to feel overwhelming, impossible and too time consuming. That was the case until about 3 years ago. And then, everything changed. When we learned how to make simple changes that would create health, happiness, savings and balance in our homes, our lives took a major turn.

Let’s face it; creating a healthy environment for our children really isn’t a choice. It’s our responsibility. Knowing where to shop, how to read labels and finding the best deals takes time and energy. Time and energy most of us don’t really have at the end of the day. When a friend showed us how they made the switch to a healthier way of life on a budget, it was a blessing we will never forget. In fact, the conversation was so impactful that we were inspired to start our own business and help other families do the same.

Now with 3 young children at home and a ton of responsibilities, becoming an

entrepreneur wasn’t foremost on our minds. But experiencing the peace of mind of a safe and healthy home was so powerful that we just had to do something more with it. Today, as Moms Creating Financial Freedom, we spend our time educating others so they can enjoy the same benefits that we do. We have a local team of women offering free workshops throughout Broward County sharing our tips for living a greener, cleaner life. We know it is imperative that we show others the importance of getting dangerous chemicals like formaldehyde, bleach and ammonia out of your homes. Did you know by using conventional cleaning products, your home is the most toxic place your family spends time in?

Protecting children and our environment is our passion and our mission. We are taking the guesswork out of healthy, green living for local families just like yours every day. We are helping them switch out the dangerous store brands for safe and effective green alternatives while staying on a budget. And for some parents who are looking to supplement their family income or work from home, we are training them to become part of our team and spread the message farther. Are you ready to make 2015 memorable? Are you searching for simple changes to positively impact your family forever? Are you ready to experience peace of mind, balance and the sweet victory of finally having it all together? Reach out to us at Moms Creating Financial Freedom for a schedule of our free workshops.

Here’s to finally having it all - Happy 2015!

I’m Cooper City Commissioner, Jamie Curran. This month, I wish to share

words of appreciation from our C i t y ’ s Represen ta t i ve on the Broward County School Board and Principals of five Cooper City Schools. These words of gratitude a r i s e f r om the Commi s s i on ’ s

commitment to “Re-Invest in Cooper City” by budgeting $100,000 for

new technology to enhance Cooper City Elementary, Cooper City High, Embassy

Creek Elementary, Griffin Elementary and Pioneer Middle schools. I am happy to share the kind words below…

It is truly a privilege to represent the residents of Cooper City on the Broward County School Board. The Cooper City Commission’s passion and dedication to the schools in the Cooper City School Zone is extraordinary. I sincerely thank the Commission and residents of Cooper City for the $100,000 commitment of computers to Cooper City High, Pioneer Middle, Cooper City Elementary, Embassy Creek Elementary and Griffi n Elementary Schools. Partnerships like this are extremely rare, and the students will reap the benefi ts of having updated technology to enhance and optimize their learning.

Laurie Rich Levinson - Broward County School Board MemberThanks to the assistance from Cooper City, Cooper City Elementary will purchase additional

laptop computers for third grade students. This year, third grade students are challenged for the fi rst time to learn new rigorous Florida State Standards and to take the new Florida Standards Assessment (FSA). Additional laptops will allow hands-on opportunities for students to use online programs.

The Cooper City Elementary School Community is grateful for the City’s “ground breaking” initiative to fund technology directly to the schools.

Dennis F. Sciullo - Principal, Cooper City Elementary School

After previous band director of Cooper City High School, Christopher Schletter, decided to move on to pursue a higher education in music, he left a legacy of excellence that would need to be continued. Though Schletter’s shoes would be large ones to fill, new director Chandler Wilson accepted the challenge.

This will be Wilson’s seventh year teaching, having previously been the band director of Hollywood Hills High School. He currently holds a masters degree in conducting from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a testament to his prowess in the fi eld of music. There is no question that he is beyond qualifi ed to uphold the Sound of Pride’s high standards, but Wilson’s devotion to the world of music compels him to lift these standards even higher.

His father, who was the music minister of his church, sparked his interest in the field. Therefore, young Wilson often saw his father playing the piano, and inevitably began playing it himself. Before long he was hooked for life.

He later learned how to play the saxophone in high school, and with it eventually impressed many musical greats, putting his talents in the spotlight. It wasn’t long before Wilson decided he wanted to master the art form he’d fallen in love with. “My director at FAMU asked me why I wasn’t a music major,” Wilson said. “I told him that I didn’t want to teach, but he convinced me, and then I just kind of got caught up in it.”

Wilson has been eagerly employing what he has learned in his musical life after taking over in June. He and the band worked hard together all summer long, preparing tirelessly for the upcoming marching season and forging a crucial bond between one

The fi nancial assistance that is being provided to Griffi n Elementary School by Cooper City will allow us to keep up with the latest technology trends and provide our students with access to new computers. The City’s generosity will be utilized to purchase laptop computers for our fourth and fi fth grade students. It will not only allow our students the opportunity to access a variety of resourceful online programs, but it will also assist in preparing them for the upcoming online assessments that are being implemented by the state.

On behalf of the staff, students and parents of Griffi n Elementary, we would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Cooper City offi cials for the ongoing support.

Gail Silig - Principal, Griffi n Elementary School

On behalf of the facility, staff and students of the Cooper City High School, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Cooper City Commission, along with the entire community for their willingness to provide the fi nancial support necessary for additional technological equipment to the students of Cooper City High. Our school is extremely fortunate to reside in a City that values the education of its residents’ children at the level the City of Cooper City does.

Wendy Doll - Principal, Cooper City High School

With the demands placed on schools to ensure technology is available to all students, it’s great to know that Cooper City has generously committed the technology needed to all fi ve City schools. At Embassy Creek Elementary, laptops will be purchased for fi fth grade students. One of our areas of focus will be having our fi fth graders learn keyboarding skills, which will be utilized during state assessments in 2015. Embassy Creek Elementary sincerely thanks the City Commission and residents of Cooper City.

Robert Becker - Principal, Embassy Creek Elementary School

I am truly honored to serve as your Commissioner and remember, ”Kids + Sports=Success!”Jamie Curran

another. Band is an activity that is extremely dependent on teamwork, so the level of trust and comradery between those involved can make or break the ensemble. Wilson has made it very clear that he plans to see the band reach even greater heights and that every day will bring new opportunities for the Sound of Pride. His immediate dedication and upbeat personality quickly made him very popular among his students.

“He has opened up the student’s eyes [to the fact] that there are other approaches and other styles out there,” Band parent, Elise Wengier said. “There’s more than one way to approach music.”

Wilson has many ambitious goals, hoping to see CCHS’s band recognized on a national level. He has done it before, though. While in charge of the Hollywood Hills Band, the students were allowed to partake in Chicago’s Thanksgiving Day parade. He wants nothing less for his new band and having Pioneer Middle as a strong feeder school makes him confident that a few years of hard work can make anything possible for the band. “The goal is [for the students] to broaden their horizons musically, culturally and personally,” Wilson said. “Everyone just needs to relax and breathe.”

The band will continue to work towards making every performance a special memory, whether it be marching band, concert band or otherwise. Schletter’s legacy of greatness will live on in the hearts of his former students, and the band is confident that their new director will be able to continue that legacy. Whatever adventures await the Sound of Pride, the students and their new director plan to tackle it together.

When hearing the old phrase, a ‘Labor of Love,’ different things come to mind to different people. Gardening, cooking, raising children and assisting them with science projects year after year, just to name a few. Well, maybe that last one is a stretch. But for a select few, namely the ones on the front lines of education, that old adage rings true. And for teachers/advisers and students of school publications, that labor is taken to the next level.

This year, Pioneer Middle’s yearbook staff has been doing just that. Traditionally, the staff, made up of about 25 hand-selected 7th and 8th graders, develops and creates the school’s yearbook, publishes two school newspapers and lends their winning personalities to the televised morning announcements. This year, however, due to schedule changes and equipment malfunctions, the morning announcements were replaced by a voice on the P.A. and the staff saw an opportunity to revamp and revive what their homeroom was missing - a morning show that would inform, entertain and inspire!

Their apprehensive adviser warned them, “You’ll have to write the script.” “We will do it!” was their eager reply. She continued, “You’ll have to edit from home.”“We will learn how.”“You’ll have daily deadlines.”“It will be our homework.”

“You’ll have to collaborate constantly, you’ll have to attend your assigned events, we’ll have to publish the yearbook, and you’ll have to keep up with your other classes!”

“We can do this, Ms. Ferreira!” was their firm response. And so began this labor of love that is now known as PMTV. This young group of

highly creative and talented individuals, who are first-year journalism students, are gaining invaluable life-skills while breathing life into Pioneer’s homeroom classes. They are up late nights making sure their deadlines are met. They are in the classroom before school starts. They eat lunch together and plan their projects. Not only are they learning to collaborate and use technology, they’ve also learned to create multi-media products with a specific audience in mind. (Common Core, anyone?) Whether it’s zombiefied teachers (featured on the Halloween special) or a news segment about the Physical Education program’s involvement with a World Record competition, the 2014-15 yearbook staff has taken their program to the next level.

As their grateful adviser, I can honestly say that our little production does inform and entertain…but it is I who am inspired.

Watch PMTV here: http://www.schooltube.com/channel/pmtv/PMTV needs your help! Please visit our Donors Choose project site and help us fill in

the technology gaps we have so that the staff can meet their creative potential. Scan the QR code to access our Donors Choose site, or visit the link below.

On September 5th, Silver Ridge Elementary School had the honor of being a stop on the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Strides Tour. Distinguished members of the tour included Andrea Suarez Falken, director of the U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools and Greg Ira, director of the Office of Environmental Education and Sustainable Initiatives in the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. We are so honored that our school was chosen as the only elementary school stop on the tour. After a short student-led presentation, our children guided the way through campus, sharing their expertise of our school’s green spaces. Along the tour, our atala butterflies rose from their overnight roost in spectacular glory, wowing the crowd almost as much as our students already had!

We began greening our school with a starter seed in the form of a grant from the Town of Davie Youth Education Safety Advisory Board in 2009. Since that start, we have watered, weeded, planted and pruned our gardens and we now have two butterfly havens that have also become certified as Wildlife Habitats from the National Wildlife Federation and Naturescape Broward. These gardens have allowed us to support many life science lessons with our students and help them to develop a sense of wonder toward the natural world.

PTO parents and support staff have also developed two edible gardens on our campus. Seedlings are sprouted in classrooms and planted with care into the gardens by our afterschool

garden club. Everyone on campus has had the pleasure of enjoying the fruits of this labor of love. And, we all enjoy watching the goodness grow!

Our after school Ecology Corps students provide the sweat equity that keeps our butterfly gardens blooming year round. Host and nectar plants keep our zebra longwings, Julias, gulf frittalaries, monarchs, painted ladies, and swallowtails happy. But, by far, our most exciting news is the arrival of the rare atala butterflies! These native species of greatest conservation need (as so deemed by Florida’s State Wildlife Action Plan) were once thought to be extinct but are making a comeback in areas where a conscious effort to plant their host plant, the coontie, is found. Silver Ridge is so proud to be a part of this effort and to have these lovely little black beauties floating through our campus.

Thanks to winning Broward County’s P3 Eco Challenge in 2013 (P3 = Protecting our Planet for Posterity), we had the funds to grow an additional reading garden outside our media center. We are grateful to The Town of Davie Aboretum for a lovely white crepe myrtle that shades a corner of this new green space and to Whole Foods Market for providing us with another majestic shade tree.

We didn’t know how far our first little garden would grow, but we are so pleased that our campus continues to flourish with possibilities and our young nature lovers are inspiring others!

On November 13th, students at Cooper City Elementary School participated in a world recording setting event sponsored by The World Sport Cup Stacking Association. The goal was to reach 600,000 people engaged in cup stacking around the world in a one-day period, setting a new Guinness Book World Record. Thirty-two countries participated in attempting to beat last year’s record of 555,932 people. As of November 20, 2014 the count was still going and they were at 587,484.

This activity at Cooper City Elementary Schools was inspired by nine year old, P.J. Ball, a National Champion in cup stacking. P.J. has participated in many events, and holds a World Championship Title. P.J. first became interested in cup stacking by viewing a YouTube video, and has been competing for 2 years.

The school’s physical education teacher, Mrs. Karen Josack, along with P.J’s mother, coordinated the event at the school. Mrs. Josack really enjoys the sport, as she feels it is great for all students - even those who aren’t very athletic. She explained, “Cooper City Elementary students were thrilled to participate in the event. This activity made quite an impression in the community. Channel 10 News even invited P.J. and other students to join the anchors on the

weekend morning news show for a friendly cup stacking competition. Cup stacking is an excellent hands-on activity for Elementary School age students. Regardless

of ability, anyone can participate at his or her own ability and skill levels. With a set of stacking cups costing about $12, you’re in the sport! Cup stacking improves concentration, hand-eye coordination, precision, math concepts, and self-confidence.

“Tip your cup” to P.J. Ball, Mrs. Josack, and the students of Cooper City Elementary School for “stacking up” for this world class event.

To celebrate the fall season, Cooper City Elementary School brought Pumpkins to life as storybook characters. Mrs. Legg, the school’s media specialist, invited each class to decorate a pumpkin as a storybook character. Shortly thereafter, the pumpkin patch began to grow in the media center.

Pumpkins came to life with characters from many different books including The Cat in the Hat, Harry Potter & Ron Weasley, Horton, David and Fly Guy. Even the Rainbow Fish joined the fun, sparkling proudly for all to enjoy. Whether students are dreaming about summer with Olaf or planting seeds with the Lorax, the students at CCES turned the media center into a storybook wonderland! Holiday decorations can be fun AND educational.

Melting ice pops dripping down arms, the stickiness rinsed with a run through the sprinklers. Color War, Capture the Flag, potato sack races…shaving cream, cheers and

chants, watermelon poolside…crafts, flashlights, card games and gooey S’mores. As parents reminisce, these are the memories they share… these are the memories of summer.

Even though summer is still a few months off, it’s already time to sort through choices and make plans for the family. As camps begin requesting deposits earlier and earlier each year, parents are faced with the daunting task of figuring out what they should do with their children for the summer. Travel camp, day camp, sleep away or sports camp? Maybe the choice is between a specialty camp like dance or football, or maybe it’s a trip up North to stay with the grandparents. With so many choices it can be overwhelming. So how does a parent decide?

So many times we base our decisions on what our own memories are and this is how we decide for our children. Whether we loved or didn’t enjoy camp as a kid, we might decide to choose a camp based on those experiences. Although it’s understandable that our own experiences from childhood influence our bias, it’s not necessarily in the best interest of our children.

The first thing a parent needs to ask themselves is what type of camp meets their individual child’s needs. Sit down and list their interests. Does your child

love art? Love to play sports? Do they thrive on constant action from one activity to the next or are they more comfortable moving at a more leisurely pace? Do they need a smaller more personal environment? Is your child outdoors often or are they continually asking to go back inside? These kinds of questions should help narrow down the big list of choices.

After deciding what type of camp, the next criteria for choosing a camp should be what you want your child to get out of their camp experience. Aside from enjoying it, are there specific skills you hope they’ll develop over the summer? Whether it’s improving at a sport, making friends or becoming more independent, is the camp you’re choosing conducive to this being accomplished?

Last but not least, the camp has to meet your needs as a parent in regard to comfort level when it comes to safety, supervision, location and, of course, financial commitment. For instance, what kind of supervision are you as a parent comfortable with for your child’s age and do the camps you’re looking at have that type of supervision? What is your price limit and are you looking at camp options that keep you within your financial comfort zone? Once you have narrowed down the list of camps that meet these criteria, you can then allow your child to choose from those options.

We all want our children to walk away with those cherished summer memories of our pasts. While it’s important to pick experiences for our children that will last them a lifetime, ones we know they’ll remember forever, we need to keep in mind that those memories may be a little different than our own… and that’s ok.

Serving over 1,800 students, the end of the calendar year continues to be a busy and exciting time for our Jaguar Family. Our PTO sponsored annual Jaguar Jog, held in early November every year, brought in over $50,000 this year. The Jaguar Jog allows the community to support our school and enables our students to come together in a fun filled few hours with the entire school community. We are proud that this is our only school wide fundraising event. As in years past, this event will allow our PTO to help meet critical school and teacher needs.

Continuing that idea of community support and school wide celebration, the Tuesday before Thanksgiving is our annual “Grandparent’s Day.” Students invite their grandparents, or other individuals who may serve in that type of role in the child’s life, to come see the school, learn more about Indian Ridge, and

be a part of their student’s school life. We also recognize and support those less fortunate in our

community. The Harvest Drive creates a friendly contest for students to bring in goods needed by those less fortunate in our community. Our Angel Tree Drive is a faculty event ensuring that all of our kids get the type of holiday season they deserve.

There are also a few other things to note. We are proud of the work Mrs. Morgan does with our young female students. Her Miss Empowerment group helps female students deal with the struggles of growing up and provides an opportunity for them to have a support group, as well as strong female role models. And speaking of the ladies, a huge congratulations to our Lady Jags Soccer Team, the Broward County Champions this year.

Flamingo Elementary has been busy falling into the autumn and winter months with our annual programs and events. Our school is so excited and fortunate to be participating in the wonderful Reading Pals program for the second year in a row with our fi rst grade students. This program has been possible through a grant from the United Way of Broward County and it is has truly benefi tted the lives of our students and enriched our community.

The Reading Pals program provides our fi rst grade students with a mentorship throughout the entire school year that allows them to build their self-confi dence through well-planned reading activities and high interest books. The mentor Reading Pals go through training and much preparation in order to provide our students with quality lessons while building rapport and relationships with our students. The reading pal mentees who have participated in the program have been able to increase their reading success through the consistent support of the volunteers each week. The students, teachers, and volunteers all enjoy being a part of this program and our Flamingo Family loves seeing the positive effect the Reading Pals have on our school community. The Reading Pal mentors and mentees look forward to working together each week on a new story and spending quality time together.

Flamingo Elementary is also very excited to announce that we held our annual Tech Trot for Technology fundraiser on Thursday, October 23rd. The students had a blast raising money for their school and earning prizes all while getting some exercise and trotting around the track for technology. Each school year our wonderful PTO volunteers hold a fundraiser to help raise money to purchase new technology and update our existing computers and various devices. Our Flamingo families understand the value of keeping up to date with the latest technology and support this important initiative each year.

Through this fundraiser and the strong support of our PTO, parents and students, our school is able to keep our current technology up and running, while purchasing brand new devices that support our students in 21st century learning. This past school year, we were able to purchase iPads, additional laptops, and printing

supplies to support student learning and Flamingo Elementary’s vision of “Educating Broward’s Future.” Our students and families continue to enjoy and participate in this rewarding annual tradition, through raising money, earning prizes, trotting around the track, and volunteering for the day’s spectacular event.

On Friday, November 14th, Flamingo carried out another spectacular Career Day, which is an exciting event that is always enjoyed by all. Each year the momentum and anticipation builds and it continuously seems to get more and more exciting, with parents, relatives, and community workers taking part in this wonderful learning opportunity for our students. The teachers and students look forward to hearing from workers right here in our community, and the students always learn so much from our amazing presenters. This year some of our Career Day presenters included musicians, nurses, police offi cers, fi re fi ghters, a judge, a veterinarian, grocery store workers, personal trainers, business workers, roofers, and a soap maker just to name a few! The classes truly enjoyed learning about all of the different jobs and possible opportunities that await them in their future. Flamingo was again taken back by the outstanding participation from our school community and passion that came from our inspiring presenters!

WINTER MONTHS AT FLAMINGO ELEMENTARY

Julie from Coral Springs asks: Hi Doctor. As a parent, how do I know when to test? How young can you test and get an accurate assessment? What do I do with the results?”

Throughout the year my office completes several examinations known as Psychoeducational evaluations. The focus is to uncover the strengths and weaknesses of our children from an educational and psychological perspective. Often we are working from a point of a difficulty. Someone (such as a teacher, a pediatrician or a parent) has noticed some area of potential deficit and our job as the psychologist is to investigate further. The time to test is often when there is a difficulty that presents itself with either behavior or with academic functioning. The one exception is to identify if your child is appropriate for advanced or gifted placements. In Broward County, the schools have multiple programs that are determined by the results of psychological testing.

As a psychologist, I have the ability to evaluate children at any age. When dealing with social communication (Autism, Asperger’s Disorder) or developmental disorders, it is recommended to evaluate as young as possible. For behavioral disruption (attention difficulties or poor behavior) it is also advisable to start young.

When adding in academic difficulties, age 6 is an accurate starting point, however, we can evaluate younger as needed. Some of the areas that are often evaluated include IQ (intelligence quotient), learning disabilities, verbal skills, comprehension, spelling, mathematics, memory and writing skills. Attentional deficits are also frequently explored and include an area known as executive functioning. Executive functioning involves skills such as planning, organization and time management. One other major area of evaluation involves reading ability, which can be examined from several perspectives.

The final result is clarification, recommendations and diagnosis as warranted, which help the child’s entire support system work together towards improvement and advancement, including potentially creating an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) or other academic assistance. My recommendations offer many areas of suggestion from homework location to reward systems to tutoring.

If your child is experiencing a difficulty or if you are concerned that one may be coming, the best advice is to start the process to ultimately help our youth reach their full potential.

Dr. Yudell is a licensed psychologist and can be reached at [email protected].
