Stewardship Corner ~

John the Baptist saw Jesus coming toward him and said,

“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world…”

Were you aware that the term “Lamb of God” only appears in the Gospel of John? John was the

youngest of the Twelve Apostles. His Gospel was the last of the four Gospels written (estimated

around 90 AD). His Gospel is also unique among the four Gospels in its approach and in its

style. John lets us know why he wrote it: “…that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the

Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.” (John 20:31)

For more than 1,300 years the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) has been a standard part of our

Catholic Mass. That term reminds us at every liturgy that Jesus allowed Himself to be sacrificed

in our behalf. It was the ultimate act of love. In a small way we are asked to respond to that

sacrifice by living lives of stewardship — by giving of ourselves in many ways. Father

Henri J. M. Nouwen, a prolific writer on what it means to be Catholic, said “Our humanity comes

to its fullest bloom in giving. We become beautiful people when we give whatever we can give: a

smile, a handshake, a kiss, an embrace, a word of love, a present, a part of our life…all of our

life.” (www.thecatholicsteward.com)

As we see here, Jesus’ sacrifice of Himself was the ultimate act of love. How will we give of our-

selves and show our love this week? And most importantly, how can we show Him that love?

Peace,

From the Archdiocese of Philadelphia:

NINE DAYS OF

PRAYER, PENANCE AND PILGRIMAGE

JANUARY 18‐26, 2014

Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., encourages

the clergy and faithful of the Archdiocese of

Philadelphia to pray with the Bishops of the United

States to end abortion. On January 22, 2014, our nation

marks the 41st anniversary of Roe v.

Wade, the Supreme Court decision that made abortion

legal throughout the U.S.

Since that date more than 55 million children’s lives

have been lost to abortion.

Our prayers and sacrifices make a difference, and do

make a tremendous difference in the face of the culture

of death with our real hope for a culture of life.

For over one hundred years, January 18-25 has marked

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

This year, the United States Conference of

Catholic Bishops, along with the World

Council of Churches, encourages all

Christians to take inspiration from St. Paul's

writings in 1 Corinthians 1:13, and ask "Has

Christ Divided Us?" Remember, all

Christians are followers of the same Lord,

Jesus Christ. Please pray for unity and

peace among all Christians!

“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?” -Matthew 5:13

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus shares these words with the crowds of people gathered

before Him. He asks them to be witnesses to the truth, saying, “Your light must shine before

others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father” (Mt 5:16). As

Christians, we are called to be forces of good in the world, or the „salt‟ and „light‟ to others.

We are called to bring others to God.

Can we do this if we are lukewarm in our own faith? Can we share the light of Christ if we are

not feeding its flame? Every day, God invites us to renew and grow in our relationship with

Him, so that we might share this faith and love with others. Let us take advantage of this

Faith Commitment Weekend and commit to reigniting the flame of faith in our lives.

Let Christ’s light shine through us! (If you missed Faith Commitment Weekend, pick up a card

in the narthex and read more at www.sacredheart.us).
