We pray for the strength and guidance to carry out our mission of love and caring.
We entrust our parish to God who makes our mission possible.
As I have done….. With our prayer on Passion Sunday (aka, Palm Sunday) we enter one of the two most sacred times of our liturgical year. We retell the story of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus, the Christ. It is a story of historical fact, grounded in the deepest of realities, transcending history in cosmic effect.
I remember as a child, and the pageantry was my first entrée into this prayer. I recall standing in Church, holding up palms while we sang and the priest walked around sprinkling us with holy water. It was fascinating because we seldom experienced so much action in church. Good Friday brought the Adoration of the Cross, in silence. In eighth grade I was the head server and had to take my shoes off for the entrance. When the Holy Saturday service was re-established for all the church, I was enthralled as the light of the Paschal Candle permeated the darkness of the night. And, our parish used a large garbage can painted white for the water to be blessed for the entire year. AND, the sound of the bells breaking forth for the Gloria. It was all a feast for the senses that drew me in and filled me. That was the intention of the Church as she revivified the Triduum liturgy in the 1950’s.
Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday are titled the Triduum, in Latin, by the Church. It means the Three-Day Event, because it is; it is one Liturgy from Thursday through Saturday night. The priest welcomes us with the sign of the cross at the beginning of prayer on Thursday and doesn’t conclude it until the end of the Easter Vigil. These are the holiest days of our liturgical year, and by participating in them we unite ourselves deeply with the saving work of our Savior. It’s long and tiring, yes, but when something is truly important to us, we do it! I invite you and encourage you to participate this year for your own good, for the growth of our faith community and for the good of the world.
…..so you must do.
