2015 SCA President Steve Moore, PE, CASpBarrish Pelham & Associates, Inc.
Hello Sacramento Claims Association! I hope everyone has had a successful and promising start to their 2015. It seems like everyone I have talked to so far this year has been busy, busy, busy, and hopes it stays that way for a long time! The first item on my “To Do List” as your new President is to genuinely thank the 2015 SCA Board of Directors for their vote of confidence and show of faith! I will do my very best to help lead the SCA Board and its Membership to continued success in 2015. Writing of ‘continued success’, my next “To Do List” item is to also thank the 2014 SCA Board, particularly the outgoing Directors, Bob Battezzatto, Art Coussoulis, Linda Hansen, and John Morgan. Each one of them helped in their own way to keep the SCA strong when other claims associations were really struggling. We recognized Bob, Art, and Linda at the Winter Party and will recognize John at an upcoming luncheon. ‘Pushing the envelope’ is a very profound and relevant statement for the insurance industry in the wake of the recession. The business world has changed, forcing companies and their employees to step out of their comfort zone and find new niches or learn additional skills to stay competitive and relevant. It is the SCA Board’s intention to ‘push the envelope’ in 2015. We have made some significant changes to our Education program offering four C.E.U. seminars for both carrier and independent adjusters. We will have eight normal luncheons concentrating on educating the ENTIRE association with topics covering property and liability claims. We have added at least two more Social events to the calendar in hopes of strengthening existing relationships, and most importantly, developing new ones.

El Dorado Restoration Sells Off DKI to CRBR Decides to Close Shop
“After 32 years of serving the disaster repair industry in Northern California , we have decided to make February El Dorado Restora-tion’s last month in business,” stated longtime SCA and CCNC advocate Barbara Prosch. “We had some great years filled with good friends and awesome employees! In order to keep claims moving uninterrupted, we have sold our DKI service territory to CleanRite BuildRite, who will no doubt serve our friends & clients with the same level of enthusiasm &
professionalism shown by El Dorado over the past 32 years. In fact, many of the same employees you have come to know at EDR will now be working with CleanRite BuildRite. Thank you for 32 great years! Your friendship & support has been genuinely appreciated! Bill & I are looking forward to kickin’ back & enjoying life for a while!”
Barbara’s Facebook page lit up over this announcement with great wishes and appreciation from all corners. She went on to state: “While we have sold our DKI territory and will be closing EDR, we’re a ways from actually retiring. The truth is that we just got tired of the battle. Bill and I are simply going to take some time off and figure out exactly where we go from here and are looking forward to new adventures and challenges.” All the best in all your adventures!
“I would like to announce that Blue Sky Cleaners has undergone a name change, to Bright Leaf Cleaners,” stated John Morrison, President of Restoration at Bright Leaf Cleaners.
“We are the fabric restoration and dry cleaning experts that specialize in the recovery of clothing and textiles damaged by fire, smoke, water and mold,” he explained. “We can also provide you with an emergency order of clothing and other items to help those affected resume everyday life,” he continued. “In most cases, emergency orders can be completed and returned within 24–48 hours.” A proud member of North American Restoration Drycleaners, Bright Leaf Cleaners provides textile restoration throughout Northern and Central California. They have been selected as one of America's Best Cleaners.John Morrison may be reached at: 209-601-6899, or [email protected]

22nd Annual Claims Conference Planning Underway
the newly formed CCNC 2015 planning com-mittee elected “Hot August Claims” as their theme for the event, as they start the new year. Comprised of repre-sentatives of local and regional insurance claims associations, the CCNC holds fast to its long-standing tradi-tion and reputation for a top-notch continuing education conference and trade-show. Incoming President, Jack Corry, and Vice Presi-dent, Tami Umland, both representatives of the Sacramento Claims Association, have laid the groundwork for what appears to be top-notch dynamic event. “Hot August Claims” is a theme befitting not only the Summer timing of the event, but in a big way plans for a sizzling conference and trade show. With the early dates this year, the committee is positioning itself to get off on the right foot. Ex-hibit booth registration and sponsorship options are both scheduled to open in early February for returning exhibitors and sponsors, respectively. Following three years of experimenting with a CCNC Dinner Banquet, the committee
agreed to forego the banquet this year. By all appearances, most folks prefer to have the time between the end of the first day and the
evening’s casino night be left open to explore some of the fine dining in the immediate area
adjacent to the Hyatt Regnecy in Downtown Sacramento. Additionally, the opening night welcoming festivities will left to wishing to partake within their own groups. “We started the welcome reception concept as a thank you to our exhibitors some years ago,” said returning Exhibitor Committee CoChair, Lisa Winn. “As it was expanded with the early afternoon opening session to a general event, most have found the reception has become un-necessary.” “We are excited about topics on the discussion table, and potential presenters for this year,” stated an enthusiastic President Corry. “CCNC is an event people look forward to, and we are committed to making it the best we can,” he added. Stay tuned in the coming weeks and months for more. Site updates will be forthcom-ing at www.ClaimsConference.org, or Like the CCNC Facebook page: www.facebook.com/TheCCNC.

The SCA Education Committee continued to build on their series of accredited Continuing Education courses for claims professionals, kicking off the new year with a morning CE seminar followed by a regular luncheon January 8, 2015 at Lions Gate."Seven Deadly Sins of Adjuster Testimony", as presented by the al-ways dynamic Ulises Castellon, of Fire Cause Analysis, and frequent co-presenter Doug Wood, a partner at Morris Polich and Purdy LLP, provided Two (2) hours of Adjuster CE credit.Whether because of heavy workloads from the recent storms, or perhaps it was that the second Thursday came so early at the start of the year, or simply that not many were aware of the early time slot, turnout for the morning session was sub-par. The potentially sad part was that it appeared that a lot of people who no doubt could benefit from this session were bound to miss it. Great content was given to a small gathering of adjusters and a few other industry professionals. Folks turned out in good numbers for the luncheon portion of the day, which served to validate that not many are yet

accustomed to variety in the time schedule. Fortunately, Castellon and Wood graciously accepted an invitation to give an abbreviated version of their presentation over the course of the luncheon. The duo tagged teamed very effectively in presenting their overview of The Seven Sins, a good deal of which touched on a recurring theme that an adjuster in deposition or on the witness stand need not apolo-gize for their handling of a claim. Doing your job appropriately and in compliance with the DOI regulations leaves no need to apologize for any aspect. Anticipating where a line of questioning is headed was another key ingredient in successful testimony. The “seven sins” included:#1. Don’t take the Bait. Your job is to explain what your Company did and why. Don't try to be a "case winner". Your Deposition is not likely to win the case.2. Beware of the Sound Bites: Always tell the Truth and don't try to be cute.3. No Absolutes: Lawyers will use leading questions. Know the truth.4. Responsibility Trap: Go in knowing you did it right. Don't let the lawyer "set you up" Don't take or give blame. Trial is Moral High ground5. Credibility Killers: Jury asses the appearance of reliability and the likelihood witness telling the truth.6. Most Dangerous Sin: List of Questions. Any List asking "why", "How often", "How many times". If you vary or change there is a possibility of impeachment.7. Forks in the Road - Witness Tools: understanding the significance of each “parsed” piece of evidence and knowing how to explain “why” are just two valuable tools.
Both the complete seminar and the abbreviated version held great value, and the speakers both stated they enjoyed the intimate interaction of the morning session.

Consumers urged to review insurance policy before second stormNever a better time to do a home inventory
SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Just as a second storm was taking aim at Northern California, California in-surance commissioner Dave Jones urged residents to prepare by learning more about the Federal Flood Insurance Program, and conducting their own complete home inventory. "The series of storms, driven by sub-tropical moisture, has the potential to cause localized flooding," Jones said. "These events are another reminder of the importance of updating your home inventory and learning more about the Federal Flood Insurance Program because traditional homeowner policies do not provide this coverage."It is imperative that homeowners and renters understand their policy, and what is covered. Generally a traditional homeowner's policy does not cover flood damage, but damage to a roof or windows or fall-ing trees may be covered.Being prepared also includes having an updated home inventory which is vital to help replace lost or damaged items. In the age of smart devices, it has never been easier to take photos and videos of clothing, jewelry and belongings and store them in your digital cloud to access should the need arise. Additionally, consumers should scan copies of important documents such as mortgage papers, deeds and insurance policies and store them in an offsite location such as your digital cloud, an email system, or on a portable drive.
Historically, many areas of California are subject to flooding. Even areas that don't usually see flooding should prepare when severe storms or heavy rains are predicted.
