What is Retail Census Data?
• The SA Retail Census measures 150 000 retail outlets
across South Africa and measures the size and
characteristics of the retail universe in various markets across retail channels.
• All retail outlets in geographically defined regions within South Africa & Africa are measured & tracked.
• Usually countrywide but can focus on specific geographic areas within countries.
• Outlet types are identified and detailed data such as
channel type, operating hours, products sold, and more is collected.
• Outlets are mapped and linked to government census
data with the purpose of profiling the demographics of the trade area.

Why was the SA Retail Census developed?
• The total universe of retail outlets in SA allows for accurate – market sizing
• A profile is created of every outlet – this enables targeting of specific channels, and sub-trade channels
