Temple overcame a nine-point second half deficit to tie the game with 40 seconds left in regulation on a three-point play by Nate Pierre-Louis.
Shizzling at the LineSenior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. currently ranks 10th among all players in NCAA Division I in free-throw shooting, having hit 90.1 percent of his shots this season (118-for-131). Alston also ranks first in the American Athletic Conference. His 14 (of 15) free throws made in Temple's win at Tulane on Feb. 2 were the most free throws made by an Owl in a single game since Khalif Wyatt made 15 vs. Duquesne on Feb. 14, 2013.
HAMMY it Up Since making his first start at Houston (Jan. 31), sophomore Justyn Hamilton, or Hammy as he is affectionately called by his teammates, has been playing with confidence. The 6-10 forward has averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds while shooting 25-of-41 from the field (61%). This is much higher than his season averages before the Houston game (2.1 ppg, 1.3 rpg, 58.3%). Hamilton is averaging 21.4 minutes per game over this current stretch.
Consistent QuintonJunior guard Quinton Rose has been a truly reliable offensive threat for the Owls this season, scoring in double figures in all but three of 28 contests and doing so for 20 straight games until an eight-point night at USF on Feb. 16. He has scored 20 or more points six times, and scored a season-high 26 points twice (vs. Memphis, at #13/13 Houston). Rose has taken the most shots for the Owls (422), hitting them at a 40.3 percent clip, and also leads the team with 62 steals.
Temple vs. the Polls With the Owls' win over #17/15 Houston on Jan. 9, Temple has now defeated a Top 25 opponent for the 12th straight season. The Owls have a total of 68 wins against ranked foes and have taken down a ranked conference foe for a second year in a row after upsetting #16/16 Wichita State in overtime on Feb. 1, 2018. Early in the 2016-17 season, the Owls beat Top 25 opponents on back-to-back days for the first time in school history (#25/RV Florida and #19/17 West Virginia) to win the 24-25) to win the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off in Brooklyn.
When Temple defeated #3/3 Syracuse on Dec. 12, 2012 (83-79), it marked the fifth straight season in which the unranked Owls had taken down a Top 10 opponent. Temple has achieved that feat in six of the last 10 seasons, most recently with a 77-52 defeat of #10/10 Kansas on Dec. 22, 2014 at the Wells Fargo Center.
Trio of PickpocketsJunior Quinton Rose, sophomore Nate Pierre-Louis and senior Shizz Alston, Jr. are averaging 2.2, 1.7 and 1.6 steals per game, respectively. Rose is currently third among all players in the AAC in steals per game (21st in NCAA Division I) while Pierre-Louis ranks fifth and Alston ranks sixth. The trio have a combined 156 steals between them, while Temple's oppo-nents have recorded just 151 steals overall. As a team, the Owls rank 14th nationally with 8.9 steals per game.

Shizz Cracks the Top 20 All-TimeAfter his 30-point performance vs. Detroit Mercy on Nov. 9, senior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. needed just 11 more to become the 53rd player in program history to score 1,000 career points. He exploded past that mark in the Owls' next game, a win vs. Georgia, scoring 25 points and hitting the 1,000 mark with his first bucket of the second half. Alston was honored with a 1,000-point ball prior to Temple's Nov. 16 game vs. Loyola Maryland. With 1,479 points through 28 games, Alston is now ranked 19th all-time in program history.
Magic Number 70The numbers don't lie - Temple almost always wins when it can reach the 70-point mark. The Owls have gone 45-10 since the beginning of the 2016-17 season, and 19-3 in 2018-19, when scoring at least 70 points.
Alston, Jr. Racking up AAC and Big 5 AwardsShizz Alston, Jr. picked up his third American Athletic Conference Player of the Week honor of the season on Feb. 18 and his fourth Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week recognition on Feb. 25. Alston has also been named to the AAC Weekly Honor Roll four times, with the fourth time being this week after scoring 24 points in the Owls' win over Tulsa.
For his most recent POY honor, Alston averaged 26.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in a 2-0 week. He led the Owls to a home victory over SMU and an overtime win at USF. Against the Mustangs the senior scored 13 straight Temple points, 15 of 18, and assisted on the lone basket not scored by him, in a stretch run to keep SMU at bay. Against the Bulls, he scored eight points in the OT period and came up with a clutch three-pointer for a 68-65 advantage. He hit two free throws in the final 45 seconds to seal the road win. Alston's seven rebounds at USF were a season high. His 37-game streak with one made three-pointer is tied for third nationally.
Quinton Rose Hits 1,000 as a JuniorJunior guard Quinton Rose needed just three points at Drexel on Dec. 22 to become the 54th player in program history to score 1,000 career points. He finished with 14 that day and now has 1,266 career points less than three years into his Temple career, averaging 13.6 ppg and ranking 36th all-time in program history.
StreakingSenior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. currently has a streak of 39 straight games with a made three-pointer to tie for first on the Owls' all-time list. Alston also joins Mike Vreeswyk as the only two Temple players to have two 20-game streaks. Dionte Christmas, who holds the Temple records for three-pointers made in a season (107) and career (319), made a three in a TU record 39 straight games from Dec. 28, 2006 through Jan. 26, 2008.
Alston's streak is tied for the fourth-longest active three-point streak among all players in NCAA Division I as of Feb. 25.

Top of the WorldTemple senior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. currently ranks second in the American Athletic Conference in scoring with a 19.0 points per game average. He is looking to become the first Owl to lead his conference in scoring since Khalif Wyatt accomplished the feat during the 2012-13 season. Wyatt, who earned A-10 Player of the Year honors that season, is one of only six Temple players to lead the conference in scoring since the 1982-83 season. He is joined by Dionte Christmas, the only player to lead the A-10 in scoring three times, David Hawkins, Aaron McKie, Mark Macon and Terence Stansbury.
The Importance of Being ErnestSenior center Ernest Aflakpui has been a consistent presence in the starting lineup for three seasons, but is making that presense felt much more so in 2018-19. Aflakpui had a career week for the Owls with double-doubles in back-to-back games, adding 12 rebounds to 12 points in a win at ECU on Jan. 16, and following it up with a career-high 15 rebounds to go with a career-high 21 points vs. Penn on Jan. 19.
Aflakpui's 6.0 points per game are well above what he averaged the last two years, while his 6.9 rebounds per game (sixth in the American Athletic Conference) are more than two rebounds per game above his average in 2017-18. He is also shooting a team-best .622 from the field and has nine blocks.
So far this season, Aflakpui has taken 17 charges, none more impactful than when he planted his feet a couple seconds before the buzzer sounded in the Owls' 73-69 win upset of #17/15 Houston. The charge call on Corey Davis, Jr. negated his game-tying layup, forcing the Cougars to foul Nate Pierre-Louis who made two free throws for the final tally. For his career, Aflakpui has taken a total of 52 charges. A left knee injury forced Aflakpui to miss the Owls' game vs. UConn on Feb. 6, and a right leg injury had him out of the USF game on Feb. 16 and Tulsa game on Feb. 23. He returned for limited minutes in the Owls' game at Memphis on Feb. 26.

Home Sweet HomeThe Liacouras Center has proven to be a tremendous home court advantage. Since the arena opened its doors in 1997, the Owls have posted a 225-76 (.748) all-time record, and set the record for wins in a single season with 16 in 2014-15.
Temple is 131-38 (.775) at home since the start of the 2007-08 campaign. To the right is a list of 10-win seasons in the building (bold under Fran Dunphy).
#Pow6rfulMindsWith the inception of its Pow6rful Minds Campaign in the fall of 2017, the AAC SAAC has helped create awareness to mental health issues and the resources available for student-athletes. The definitive goal has been to end the stigma re-lated to seeking help and promoting academic and personal success through a healthy, powerful mind. The Conference’s second Mental Health Awareness Week of the 2018-19 school year will take place Feb. 25-March 3 with The American men’s and women’s basketball games highlighting the week-long initiative. Green, the color of mental health awareness nationally, has been seen by The American’s fans during designated athletic contests throughout the school year and the Conference’s #Pow6rfulMinds hashtag has been used prominently on all of its social media accounts. During all men’s and women’s basketball contests this week, The American coaching staffs will wear specially designed green ribbon pins.
Mood: 🔥On the first-ever "Meme Night" for Temple Athletics, the Owls made a statement as they came out on fire against UConn on Feb. 6. Temple hit 10 of its first 11 shots, some of those in a 15-0 run for an 18-point lead before the midway point of the first half. The Owls, who had five players reach double figures in scoring, shot a first-half best 62 percent from the field, scored a first-half best 46 points, and led the Huskies by as many as 28 points with eight minutes left in the contest.
Starting StatOver the first 20 games of the season, Temple's starting lineup had the same five players: Shizz Alston, Jr., Nate Pierre-Lou-is, Quinton Rose, De'Vondre Perry and Ernest Aflakpui. It was the longest stretch to open a season with the same starting five in Fran Dunphy's 13-year tenure, surpassing a 16-game start with the same lineup in 2017-18. Dunphy switched the lineup for the first time in the Owls' game at #13/13 Houston on Jan. 31, replacing Perry with sophomore Justyn Hamilton.
Nate Pierre-Louis Named American Athletic Conference and Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week on Jan. 14After helping lead the Owls to wins over #17/15 Houston and against USF in overtime, Nate Pierre-Louis earned his first-ev-er AAC Player of the Week and Philadelphia Big 5 Player of the Week honors on Jan. 14. The sophomore averaged 20 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks. He scored 18 points (4-of-8 FG, 9-of-10 FTs) with four rebounds as Temple handed the Cougars their first loss of the season. Pierre-Louis followed that with a team-best 22 points (6-of-10, 8-of-8 FTs) in the 82-80 overtime win vs. USF. He scored six of his season-tying 22 points in the OT period as well as posting two of his career-high three blocks.
Remembering MikThe Temple men's basketball team is wearing a strip on the left breast of their uniforms with the initials MK in remem-brance of the passing of one of the program's standout guards, Mik Kilgore. Owl players will also wear shooting shirts in his honor. Mik Kilgore passed away on Nov. 2, 2018 due to complications from a heart attack. He was 48.
Going OTTemple is 65-50 all-time in overtime games and 23-7 in head coach Fran Dunphy’s 12+ seasons at the helm. The Owls are 4-0 in OT this season after a 77-75 win vs. Davidson on Dec. 15 in the Boardwalk Classic, an 85-81 OT road win at Wichita State on Jan. 6, an 82-80 home win over USF on Jan. 12 and a 70-69 road win at USF on Feb. 16.
Dynamic Duo Shizz Alston, Jr. and Quinton Rose became the 12th Temple duo to ever reach 1,000 points in the same season.
Year-Long Free Throw StreakJunior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. set a program record with 52 consecutive free throws made from Dec. 28, 2016 to Dec. 6, 2017. The previous record of 49 in a row was set by Hall of Famer Lynn Greer from March 8-25, 2001. When Alston hit 6-of-6 free throws in the Owls' win vs. Wisconsin on Dec. 6, he surpassed Greer's mark.
Alston missed his first of two free throw attempts vs. Saint Joseph's on Dec. 9, but did lead all players with 20 points in the game. He currently is on pace to set the Temple career free throw percentage record with his .880 mark the best in program history. So far in 2018-19, Alston is shooting 90.1 percent to lead the AAC and rank 10th in NCAA Division I.
Number SwitchIt is not uncommon for a player to switch a number from one year to the next, but it is rare when three do so. This season, senior Shizz Alston, Jr., and juniors Alani Moore II and Quinton Rose all changed to different numbers to start the 2018-19 season. Each for different reasons. Alston went from his #3, which he wore all three seasons, to #10, to honor his father, Levan Alston, who wore it he played for the Owls in the mid-90s. Moore II went from #2, which he wore his first two sea-sons, to #0, which is the number he wore in high school. As for Rose, he went from #13 to #1. He made his switch as #1 has been his favorite number and the first he donned when he started playing the sport at the age of six.

The Ratio Favors ShizzWith a career assist/turnover ratio aver-age of 2.20, senior Shizz Alston, Jr. ranks seventh all-time at Temple. Howard Ev-ans (1986-89) is the Owls' all-time career leader in A/TO ratio at 3.12.
Also on that list is Levan Alston (1994-96), Shizz's father, in 10th place at 1.88.
For ThreeTemple has made at least one three-pointer in 765 consecutive games. The last time the Owls did not make a three-point-er in a game was February 1, 1996. Temple missed all 16 three-point attempts that day in dropping a 59-35 decision to #1 UMass at McGonigle Hall.
A Passing FancySenior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. recorded his second career double-double of his career when he scored 15 points and tied his career high with 10 assists in Temple's win over California on Nov. 20. On the year, he ranks third in the American Athletic Conference with a 5.1 assist per game average. The last Owl to average five or more assists per game was Lynn Greer, who averaged 5.5 assists during the 2000-01 season.
Walking OnTemple added three walk-ons for the 2018-19 season as juniors Anto Keshgegian and Tim Waddington along with fresh-man Jasen West made the squad. Keshgegian, a 6-3, 185-pound guard, transferred to Temple from Eastern College. The Media, Pa. native played high school ball at nearby St. Joseph's Prep. Waddington, a 6-5, 195-pound forward, earned first team all-conference honors for Central Bucks South as a senior. He is a Warrington, Pa, native. West, a Winter Springs, Fla. native, helped Lake Highland Prep to a 22-win season as a senior in 2017-18.
All-Time Winningest Coach in Big 5 HistoryWith Temple’s win at UCF on Feb. 6, 2016, head coach Fran Dunphy surpassed former Owl coach John Chaney to become the all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history. Dunphy, who became the fifth coach to win 200 games at two schools while taking each to six NCAA Tournaments, is the one of nine coaches to have won 200 or more games at a Big 5 school since the city league was formed in 1955. Below is the list of 200-win coaches in city-series history.

1969 NIT Championship Team Honored at Penn Game on Jan. 19Fifty years ago the Temple Owls cut down the nets at Madison Square Garden, defeating the Boston College Eagles, 89-76, to win the 1969 NIT. On Saturday, Jan. 19, Temple Basketball celebrated the Golden Anniversary of that Championship Season with members of the historic Owl team being honored at halftime of the team's game against Penn.
Temple's radio color analyst and captain of the 1968-69 Owls John Baum led the team with 19.3 scoring and 13.3 rebound averages. A Temple and Philadelphia Big 5 Hall of Famer, Baum scored 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the title game, but the MVP honors were awarded to BC's Terry Driscoll after the game to a chorus of boos at the Garden.
Baum, who went on to a professional career in the NBA and ABA, was joined in Naismith Hall of Fame coach Harry Lit-wack's starting five for most of the season by Temple Hall of Famer Joe Cromer (15.7 ppg.), Ed Mast (10.1 ppg.), Bill Strunk (7.2 ppg.) and Tony Brocchi (6.9 ppg.). Jim Snook (3.9 ppg.) and Tom Wieczerak (4.7 ppg.), who came off the bench to spark a 25-9 late rally to lift the Owls to the win over nationally-ranked Boston College, were the team's top reserves. The Owls also snapped the Eagles' 19-game win streak and spoiled the coaching finale for their legendary coach Bob Cousey.
Temple Picked to Finish Sixth in the AACThe Owls were picked to finish sixth in the 2018-19 Preseason AAC Coaches Poll. The coaches voted UCF as the favorite to win the league title with the Knights garnering six of a possible 11 first-place votes and 114 points to edge Cincinnati (107 pts) for the No. 1 spot. Houston (103 pts) was picked to finish third and the Cougars were followed by Memphis (85), UConn (75), Temple (74), SMU (63), Wichita State (60), Tulsa (48), Tulane (23), ECU (22) and USF (18).
It is the fourth time the Owls have been picked to finish sixth, including the 2015-16 season when Temple won the regular season conference title.
25 Times TwoShizz Alston, Jr. and Quinton Rose each scored 25 points in Temple's 81-77 win over Georgia on Nov. 13. The last time two Owls scored 25 or more in a game was the final game of the 2013-14 season when Quenton DeCosey tallied 28 and Will Cummings added 25 in a 94-90 double-overtime loss to UCF in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championship on March 12, 2014 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis.
Rebound MachineSophomore guard Nate Pierre-Louis pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds in Temple's season-opening win over La Salle. That total was nearly double his previous career best of seven set at SMU on Jan. 10, 2018, and it is the most rebounds by an Owl guard since Dionte Christmas also grabbed 13 in a win over Richmond on Jan. 31, 2009. The last guard to pull down more than 13 rebounds was Mark Tyndale, who recorded 15 boards against Charlotte on Mar. 14, 2008. Pierre-Louis added 14 points in the win, making it his first career double-double.

TEMPLE MEN'S BASKETBALLTemple Welcomes Six New Members to its Basketball Ring of HonorThe Temple University Basketball Ring of Honor will honor its third class of inductees during the 2018-19 season with two former women's basketball standouts, the late Mimi Carroll Kurtz (1982-86) and Claudrena Harold (1994-97), and four former men's basketball greats, Howard Evans (1984-88), Ed Lerner (1946-49), Tim Perry (1984-88) and the late Jerry Rullo (1941-46), joining the elite group.
Carroll Kurtz and Harold will be recognized when the women's basketball team hosts #1 UConn on Sunday, January 20. Evans, Lerner, Perry and Rullo will be honored at the men's basketball game against Tulsa on Saturday, February 23.
The men's honorees feature a pair of teammates as Lerner and Rullo played together for one season in the 40s while Evans and Perry were on the same team all four seasons, including the 1987-88 Owls' squad that ended the regular season ranked #1 in the nation.
A starter since his freshman season in 1945-46, Lerner scored 899 points over an 85-game career with the Owls. He led Temple in scoring during the 1946-47 season with a 10.2 average and twice was the Owls' second highest scorer. He starred in numerous games and some of his top performances came against nationally ranked opponents. As a junior, he averaged 13.3 points per game while becoming the first Temple player to score 200 or more points in three straight seasons. That same season he scored 22 points in a 60-59 upset of Kentucky, one of only two losses for the Wildcat team that would go on to win the 1948 NCAA Championship.
A three-sport star for the Owls from 1941 to 1946, Rullo captained the basketball and soccer teams and also played baseball. His college days were interrupted by World War II, where he served in the United States Army. Rullo returned to Temple for his senior season in 1945-46, where he averaged 8.2 points per game. A physical education for the Frankford Friends School for over 20 years, Rullo played professionally for five seasons upon his graduation and was the last living member of the 1946-47 Philadelphia Warriors championship basketball team at the time of his passing in October 2016. He also was a longtime college basketball referee who worked many Philadelphia Big 5 games in his officiating career.
Evans, who owns the school records for single season (294) and career (748) assists, was the starting point guard for Owl teams that posted back-to-back 32-win seasons in 1986-87 and 1987-88. Evans was instrumental in Temple's incredible success during that two-year period with the Owls ranked as high as fifth in '86-87 and topping the polls for the final six weeks of his senior campaign in '87-88. A first team All-Atlantic 10 and All-Big 5 honoree as a senior, Evans ranks 23rd on Temple's all-time scoring list with 1,459 points and fourth on the school's all-time steals list with 268. In arguably the greatest Big 5 game ever played, Evans dished a school-record tying 20 assists to help #1 Temple defeat #10 Villanova, 98-86, at McGonigle Hall.
Perry, who is Temple's all-time leader with 392 blocked shots, was the recipient of many of Evans' assists as the two combined to lead the Owls to 114 wins, the most-ever victories over a four-year time span. Perry, who is tied for the school career field goal percentage record, owns three of Temple's top single season block totals. The 6-9 forward scored 1,368 points and his 985 rebounds rank seventh all-time at the school. Perry, who is one of eight Temple players selected in the first round of the NBA, played eight seasons in the league where he scored over 3,000 points and grabbed nearly 2,000 rebounds. The 1988 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year was a two-time first team all-conference honoree and a three-time all-Big 5 first team selection.
20th Anniversary of 1999 Elite Eight Team Celebrated on Jan. 27Temple celebrated the 20th Anniversary of one of its best teams, the 1998-99 Elite Eight squad, on Sunday, January 27 when the Owls hosted Cincinnati. Under the direction of Hall of Fame coach John Chaney, the 1998-99 squad posted a 24-13 overall record while playing the nation's number one non-conference schedule. Led by all-Atlantic 10 performers Pepe Sanchez and Lamont Barnes, the Owls posted a 13-3 conference record to win the East Division for the second straight season. Rhode Island would defeat the Owls, 62-59, on a buzzer-beater by Lamar Odom in the A10 Championship game, but the Cherry and White was awarded an at-large bid to the NCAAs.
As the #6-seed, Temple would defeat #11-seed Kent State, 61-54, before knocking off the third-seeded Cincinnati Bearcats, 64-54, to advance to the Sweet 16. Playing in the Mead-owlands, the Owls blew past 10-seed Purdue, 77-55, to advance to their fourth Elite Eight under Chaney. Like its first Elite Eight in 1988, Temple would again face top-seed Duke. The Blue Devils proved to be too much in the rematch, shooting 60 percent from the floor to end the Owls' magnificent season, 85-64.
Sanchez and Mark Karcher were named to the All-Region team. The Owls' other start-ers that season were Rasheed Brokenborough and Kevin Lyde. Quincy Wadley earned Sixth Man of the Year from the A10 while Keaton Sanders and Ron Rollerson rounded out Chaney's eight-man rotation.
30-30 VisionSenior guard Shizz Alston, Jr. has twice scored 30 or more points this season, including a career-high 31 points in the Owls' win vs. UMass on Dec. 12. His first 30-point effort (then a career high) came in Temple's win over Detroit Mercy on Nov. 9. He hit seven of 12 from three-point range in that outing, and made 11-of-12 free throws in the recent effort vs. UMass.
Alston's first 30-point effort led to him being named AAC Player of the Week on Nov. 12, becoming the first Owl to earn the honor since Obi Enechionyia accomplished it two seasons ago (Nov. 28, 2016). Alston was also just the sixth Owl to garner the award since the conference was formed in 2013. After his 31-point game vs. UMass followed by a dou-ble-double of 24 points and 11 assists in the Owls' win over Davidson on Dec. 15, Alston was again named the co-AAC Player of the Week.
Alston's first 30-point performance marked the first by an Owl since Quenton DeCosey on Jan. 31, 2016. He is now the first Owl to record two 30-point performances since Khalif Wyatt scored 30 or more points seven times in the 2012-13 season.
Fran Dunphy Receives Dean Smith AwardTemple basketball coach Fran Dunphy, who is recognized as much for his charity work and community service off the court as he is for his success on the court, was the recipient of the 2018 Dean Smith Award by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association, it was announced by USBWA President David Teel of the Newport News Daily Press on Oct. 15. The award was presented to Dunphy on Nov. 1 at the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off luncheon at the Hilton City Avenue in Philadelphia featuring the Philly Six Coaches.
The Dean Smith Award honors an individual in college basketball who embodies the spirit and values of Coach Smith, the long-time Hall of Fame coach at North Carolina. "To receive an award named in honor of Dean Smith is truly humbling," Dunphy said. "No one had more integrity or did more to promote what is good in college basketball. To be recognized like this is a tremendous honor."
Coaches selected for the award are recognized for their principles of honesty and integ-rity, for treating all people with courtesy and respect, for accomplishments off the court, and for the impact they have made on their community and the lives of their players. Pre-vious award winners include John Thompson (Georgetown) in 2015, Tom Izzo (Michigan State) in 2016 and Don Donoher (Dayton) in 2017.
Four in a RowThis season marked the first time in over 50 years that Temple opened a campaign with four straight home contests. The last time an Owl men's basketball team did that was the 1962-63 season. That season Temple played its first seven games at either the Palestra or South Hall, its on-campus home court at the time.
Big 5 HistoryThe Owls went 2-2 in the Philadelphia Big 5 this season with wins over La Salle and Saint Joseph's and losses to Penn and #21 Villanova. Temple also finished up at 2-2 in Big 5 play last season. The Owls have won or shared a record 27 Big 5 titles (21 shared, six outright) in their history with the last coming during the 2012-13 season. The 2017-18 Big 5 title was won by Villanova, its fifth straight, and the Wildcats won a record 25 straight city-series games until this season. Temple had been the last team to defeat Villanova in December of 2012 before Penn upset the #17 Wildcats 78-75 at the Palestra on Dec. 11, 2018.
Men's Basketball Signs Damian Dunn in Early PeriodDamian Dunn, a 6-4 guard out of Meadowbrook (Ga.) High, has signed a National Letter of Intent to play men's basketball at Temple. "We are excited to welcome Damian to the Temple Basketball family," said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. "He is not only a talent-ed young man on the court, but outstanding citizen who will be a great fit as teammate. He will play a big part in helping the program continue its storied history of success."
A native of Kinston, N.C., Dunn transferred from Kinston High following the 2017-18 aca-demic year. As a junior at Kinston he averaged 17.5 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game as a junior while helping lead the Vikings to the top seed in the NCH-SAA 2A Eastern bracket and a share of the ECC title. Dunn earned First Team All-District 3 honors by the N.C. Basketball Coaches Association in 2017-18.
"Damian has good size for a guard at 6-4, and is probably closer to 6-5," said Temple asso-ciate head Aaron McKie. "He is a scorer, who can post you up as well as shoot the three. He also is a good playmaker with a toughness to his game. He is simply an outstanding college basketball, and even a better person. I am really going to enjoy coaching this young man."
One of 25 active NCAA Division I coach-es with 500 victories, Fran Dunphy is in his 13th and final season at the helm of the Tem-ple men's basketball program in 2017-18. The all-time winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history, Dunphy
is also just the fifth coach to win 200 at two different Divi-sion I programs while also taking both schools to six or more NCAA Tournaments. He has joined Lou Henson (New Mexico, Illinois), Bob Huggins (Cincinnati, West Virginia), Eddie Sutton (Arkansas, Oklahoma State) and Roy Williams (Kansas, North Carolina) in this elite club. A part of Big 5 Basketball for the last six decades, Dun-phy starred at La Salle as a player (1967-70) and served on the Explorer staff as an assistant coach before embarking on a 17-year stint as the head coach of the Penn Quakers (1989-06). He became the first person to serve as the head men's basket-ball coach at two Philadelphia Big 5 institutions when he took over the reins of the Temple program from Hall of Fame coach John Chaney on April 10, 2006. All he has done at Temple is win. Having earned back-to-back American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year hon-ors in 2014-15 and 2015-16, Dunphy ranks third on the school's all-time coaching win list with a 267-160 record while guiding the Owls to seven NCAA Tournaments, five conference titles and two NITs, including a trip to the 2015 NIT Semifinals in his 12 years at the helm. His Temple teams have defeated seven Top 10 teams in his tenure and have appeared in the Top 25 during 24 weeks. Dunphy recorded his historic 500th coaching win in impec-cable fashion during the 2014-15 season by knocking off Mem-phis, 80-75, in the American Athletic Conference Quarterfinal round on March 13. His overall record stands at 577-323 which includes 17 20-win seasons, 16 NCAA Tournament appearanc-es, 14 conference championships, eight Big 5 titles and two NIT trips. Named Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year in four of his 12 seasons at Temple, Dunphy led his second Owl squad on a late-season run to the Atlantic 10 Championship. He guided the Cherry and White to a 21-13 overall mark in 2007-08, in-cluding a second place A-10 regular season finish with an 11-5 conference record. He followed that by directing his charges in 2008-09 to a 22-12 record, 11-5 in league play, and another conference championship. The 2009-10 season is one that will go down as one of the best in Temple lore. Picked tied for fifth in the A-10 preseason poll, Dunphy motivated his charges to their first A-10 regular season title (9th overall) since 2002 with a 14-2 record. The 2010 A-10 and NABC District Coach of the Year brought the Owls back into the national spotlight with the program's first national ranking since 2001, with the team staying in the polls for 13 consecutive weeks. His Owls would go on to become just the second A-10 team to win three consecutive confer-ence championships while also posting just the fifth perfect Philadelphia Big 5 season in the program's history. The number one accomplishment achieved by the 2009-10 Temple team, that finished the season with a #12 ranking in the Associated Press poll, was its 29 victories (against six defeats), which ranks third in the school's history. In 2010-11, Dunphy led the Owls to a 26-8 record, includ-ing another 14-2 mark in A-10 play, and a fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. This time the Owls, the 7-seed in West Region, defeated 10th-seeded Penn State, 66-64, in the second round for the program's first NCAA win since 2001.
The Cherry and White game second-seeded San Diego State all they could handle in the next game before falling to the #5/6-ranked Aztecs, 71-64, in double-overtime. It was a great season for Temple as the Owls were ranked among the nation's Top 25 for eight weeks during the season, climbing as high as #19 in the January 10 Associated Press poll. The Owls also overcame mid-February injuries to two starters, closing the season with seven wins in their final 10 games. The only losses in that stretch came to NCAA Sweet 16 participants Duke, Richmond and San Diego State. In 2011-12, despite losing projected starter Scootie Randall for the season and center Micheal Eric for 13 games, Dunphy guided his charges to a 24-8 mark and the program's first outright A10 regular season title since 1989-90. The Owls fin-ished 13-3 in league play and Dunphy earned his second A10 Coach of the Year honor for his efforts. Temple defeated #3/3 Duke to mark its fourth straight season with a win over a Top 10 opponent, and later cracked the national polls for the third straight year. Temple, which also shared the Big 5 title, earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight sea-son, and was the fifth-seed in the NCAA Midwest Region. In 2012-13, Dunphy again guided the Owls to another 20-plus win campaign with the Cherry and White becoming one of eight teams to compete in the last six straight NCAA Tour-naments. Temple also knocked off a Top 10 team, this time #3/3 Syracuse, 83-79, at Madison Square Garden (12/22/12) to extend its current nation’s best record to five straight seasons of defeating a Top 10 foe while being unranked at the time. Temple would finish the campaign with a 24-10 record, advancing to the third round of the NCAA Tournament be-fore narrowly falling to top-ranked Indiana, 58-52. The Owls capped their final season in the Atlantic 10 Conference with a thrilling 84-76 win over #19/21 VCU on CBS to finish tied for third in the league with an 11-5 record. The program struggled in 2013-14, its first season in the American Athletic Conference. In a classic rebuilding year, the Owls posted a 9-22 record. The Cherry and White did con-tinue its streak of wins over a nationally-ranked program to seven with a 71-64 upset over #23 SMU. In 2014-15, Dunphy led his team to the best turnaround among all Division I teams, posting 17 more wins than the pre-vious season to finish at 26-11 overall and 13-5 in the confer-ence. A signature win over #10 Kansas was among the total as the Owls posted a 77-52 victory over the Jayhawks at the Wells Fargo Center (12/22). The Owls finished the regular season 23-10, but were sur-prisingly left out of the NCAA Tournament. As the #1 overall seed in the NIT, Dunphy, in his time coaching in the tourna-ment, guided Temple to wins over Bucknell, George Washing-ton and Louisiana Tech to reach the semifinals, before falling to Miami at Madison Square Garden. Dunphy was named American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, marking his third conference coach of the year honor (A-10: 2010, 2012). He also joined Chaney (516) as one of only two coaches to win 500 or more games at Big 5 schools. Defying expectations yet again in 2015-16, the Owls were picked to finish sixth in The American but instead Dunphy led his team to a 14-4 record and an American Athletic Confer-ence Regular Season Championship. Temple fell to confer-ence tournament champion UConn in the semifinals, but was awarded a 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Owls took seventh-seeded Iowa to overtime before falling 72-70 in their NCAA First Round game. Dunphy was named the American's Coach of the Year for a second year in a row, as well as the NABC District Coach of the Year. The 2016-17 season saw the Owls defeat ranked opponents on consecutive days for the first time in school history. Temple
upset #25 Florida State and #19 West Virginia to win the 2016 NIT Season Tip-Off. With its projected starting backcourt side-lined for the season, the Cherry and White still finished 16-16 and fell short of another postseason bid. In 2017-18, Temple defeated a Top 25 program for the 11th year in a row and made a return to the postseason with an NIT bid after putting togeth-er a resume that included wins over three teams that were nationally ranked or eventually nationally ranked for most of the year. One of the most respected coaches in the nation, Dunphy has coached eight Conference Players of the Year, three Con-ference Rookies of the Year, five perfect Conference seasons and 56 All-Conference honorees. Prior to joining Penn's coaching staff, Dunphy served as an assistant under Speedy Morris at his alma mater, La Salle Uni-versity (1985-86 through 1987-88). The Philadelphia native's coaching career began at the United States Military Academy (1971-72), where he served as an assistant under head coach Dan Dougherty. In 1975, he became head coach of his high school alma mater, Malvern Prep. He remained there until be-coming Lefty Ervin's assistant at La Salle University (1979-80). The following year, Dunphy joined current Maryland head coach Gary Williams' staff at American University. He served as an assistant two seasons under Williams, and the final three years under Ed Tapscott, the former head coach of the NBA’s Washington Wizards (2008-09). He returned to La Sal-le in 1985, serving one more season under Ervin and assist-ing Morris for two seasons. He left La Salle to become Tom Schneider's assistant at Penn in 1988. In 1989, Dunphy was named the 16th head coach at Penn. He would compile a 310-163 overall record in his 17-year ca-reer. His Quaker teams won an unprecedented 48 straight Ivy League games and four league titles from 1992 through 1996. His 1993-94 team posted a 25-3 record and earned a Number 25 ranking in the CNN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, the program's first such ranking since the 1978-79 campaign. That year also included a 90-80 first round upset of sixth-seed Nebraska in the NCAA Tournament. In his last eight seasons at Penn, Dunphy guided the Quak-ers to six Ivy League titles and a 93-19 league record. From 1999-2001, he led Penn to 25 straight league wins, including a perfect 14-0 mark in 1999-2000. In 2001-02, Dunphy's Quak-ers posted a 25-7 record and won the school's first outright city-series title with a perfect 4-0 mark since 1973-74. A full-time educator on and off the court, Dunphy is in his 11th year teaching in Temple's prestigious Fox School of Busi-ness. He is team-teaching an honors course with Dr. Lynne Anderson, entitled, Management, Theory & Practice: From the Locker Room to the Board Room. He previously had served as a lecturer in the Wharton Executive Education program and in the management department of the Wharton School. Dunphy is one of the leaders in the local Coaches vs. Cancer campaign and was named to the National Council of Coaches vs. Cancer. He was also honored as the 2002 National Coach-es vs. Cancer Coach of the Year for his service and tireless dedication to those in need. On September 23, 2008, he joined four other coaches to speak to legislators on Capitol Hill on the need for more funding for cancer research. The Owl mentor also devotes time to Big Brothers/Big Sis-ters of Greater Philadelphia's Board of Directors, and his Penn and Temple teams have participated in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program each year. He is also a member of the Phila-delphia CYO Hall of Fame. A 1970 La Salle graduate with a degree in marketing, Dun-phy was an outstanding player under Explorers' head coach Tom Gola. As a junior, he helped the Explorers to a 23-1 record. He served as a co-captain his senior year when he averaged 18.6 ppg and led the team in assists, while also being named the MVP of the annual Quaker City Basketball Tournament. In 1979, he earned a Master's degree in counseling and human relations from Villanova University. Dunphy and his wife, Ree, reside in Villanova, Pa., with their son, J.P.

Mr. Big FiveTemple head coach Fran Dunphy is synonymous with the Philadelphia Big 5. Dunphy, who lived his first 10 years in Southwest Philadelphia before moving to nearby Drexel Hill, Pa., starred at La Salle from 1967 through 1970. He would later serve as an assistant at his alma mater (1979-80; 1985-88) before taking the assistant coaching job at Penn for the 1988-89 season. After one season he would take over as the Quakers head coach, compiling a 310-163 record in 17 seasons. He is now in his 13th season at Temple. He received a master’s degree in counseling from Villanova, and currently resides in Villanova, Pa.
A Man For All CausesDunphy has been a major contributor of his time and energy to the American Cancer Society through Coaches vs. Cancer. He has spearheaded the local efforts of the six DI coaches that have led to raising over $1 million to benefit the American Cancer Society. Named the Coaches vs. Cancer National Coach of the Year for his efforts, Dunphy has helped to steer events in the area such as the Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Outing; the Coaches vs. Cancer BasketBall; coordinated open practices with the six area teams and holding a March Madness Breakfast to raise awareness for the cause. He was honored in 2008 as a local hero by Bank of America for his role with Coaches vs. Cancer, and was honored in 2017 with the Circle of Honor Award by the American Cancer Society.
Another cause that Dunphy champions is Big Brothers/Big Sisters. The Owl coach devotes his time to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Greater Philadelphia by serving on the organziation’s Board of Trustees. His Penn teams participated in Big Brothers/Big Sisters programs each year during his tenure at the school. His Temple teams have been ac-tively participating in the program the past three seasons.
Dunphy is also a member of the Philadelphia CYO Hall of Fame.
Moving UpWith a win vs. Tulsa on Feb. 4, 2016, Fran Dunphy earned his 206th victory at Temple and moved into third place on the all-time Temple coaching win list, surpassing James Usilton, Sr. (205, ‘26-39). Hall of Fame coach John Chaney (516, ‘82-06) tops the list followed by fellow Hall of Famer Harry Litwack (373, ‘52-73). Dunphy is now 267-160 (‘06-present).
A-10 SuccessUnder Dunphy, the Owls won the outright A-10 regular season title in 2011-12 for the first time since 1989-90. During Temple’s years in the A-10 under Dunphy, the Owls went 80-32 in A-10 play and won three A-10 Champion-ships (2008, 2009, 2010).
Professor DunphyFor the 12th straight year, Dunphy is teaching an honors course in the Uni-versity’s prestigious Fox School of Business with Dr. Lynne Andersson. The course, titled Management, Theory and Practice: From the Locker Room to the Board Room, is offered in the fall semester.
Top 25 CoachTemple coach Fran Dunphy enters the 2018-19 season ranked 21st in total wins among active Division I coaches with 557. He reached the 500-win mark when the Owls beat Memphis in the AAC Tournament quarterfinals in 2015, and is now one of 30 active Division I coaches to record 500 career wins.
Dunphy Honored With ACS National Circle of Honor AwardTemple head coach Fran Dunphy and Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli were presented with the 2017 Circle of Honor Award by the American Cancer Soci-ety on June 11, 2017 at the 18th Annual Circle of Honor Dinner at Merion Golf Club. This prestigious national honor within the Coaches vs. Cancer program recognizes college coaches for their extraordinary commitment to the Ameri-can Cancer Society's mission of saving lives against cancer through fundrais-ing and cancer education. Dunphy has been an active member of Coaches vs. Cancer since 1996. He is currently the Coaches vs. Cancer of Philadelphia co-chair, which enables him to lead events including the annual gala, tip-off, pre-season luncheon and school initiative, and has raised over $14 million in the fight against cancer. He is a former chair of the Coaches vs. Cancer Na-tional Council, and is a past recipient of the 2002 National Coaches vs. Cancer Coach of the Year Award for his leadership to the program.
Quinton Rose Named to Preseason AAC First TeamJunior guard Quinton Rose became the first Owl named to the Preseason All-Conference First Team in the league's six-year history. Rose, the Owls' leading returning scorer (14.9 ppg) is not only the first Temple player named to the preseason AAC First Team, but he is one of only three Owls to garner preseason honors. The other two Temple players selected preseason all-conference were Will Cummings and Quinton DeCosey, who were second team picks in 2014-15.
A-10 SuccessTemple went 4-1 against its former conference this season, beating La Salle, Saint Joseph's, UMass and Davidson and losing only to VCU. Temple still holds the record for most conference wins in Atlantic 10 history, posting a 376-132 mark from 1982 through 2013. The Owls' win percentage of .740 is second to Villanova (29-8, .748), which competed in the conference during its Eastern 8 years (1976-80).
Arashma Parks SidelinedFreshman forward Arashma Parks had successful surgery on his right shoulder on Oct. 10. The surgery was performed by Temple's team physician, Dr. Milo Sewards, at Temple University Hospital. Parks, who suffered the shoulder injury at practice on September 29, is expected to make a full recovery. There is no timeline for his return.
The Owls’ lone freshman on the 2018-19 team, Parks averaged 11.6 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks as a senior at the Phelps School in Malvern, Pa in 2017-18. He shot 56 percent from the field, helping his team to a 21-12 record. Prior to transferring to the Phelps School, he played for Springfield (Mass.) Commonwealth Academy from 2014-17. He is the younger brother of Omari Spellman, who helped lead Villanova to the 2018 NCAA National Championship before being selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA Draft.
Fran Dunphy Receives PSWA Good Guy AwardTemple University men's basketball coach Fran Dunphy was honored by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association on Jan. 21 with the organization's Good Guy Award. The award was presented at the 115th annual PSWA banquet held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Cherry Hill, N.J.
Dunphy, in his 13th and final season as the Owls' head coach, received the Dean Smith Award presented by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association on Nov. 1, and has been honored by many of Temple's opponents during this season for his contributions to the sport.
Temple University Mourns the Passing of Men’s Basketball Great Mik KilgoreMik Kilgore, who starred with the Temple men’s basketball team from 1988 through 1992 and returned 25 years later to earn his bachelor’s degree, passed away Nov. 2, due to complications from a heart attack. He was 48. “It is a very sad day for Temple University and Temple Basketball,” said Temple head coach Fran Dunphy. “Mik coming back to get his degree was a great Temple story and a lot of people shared in his success. He deserved a lot of credit for getting that degree and he was on his way to using it well with his new job at Girard College. He had made a great impression on a lot of people with his spirit and his hard work. Somebody wanting to make a difference in life and I think he was doing all of that until tragically he lost his life.” Mr. Kilgore was a standout high school player under Temple graduate and Philadelphia coaching legend Joey Gold-enberg at West Philadelphia High. As a senior he averaged 17.8 points and 11.5 rebounds per game in earning Public League Player of the Year from the Markward Club. Before arriving at Temple, Mr. Kilgore earned the Sonny Hill Mr. Basketball Award for representing the program as a player, student and citizen while playing in the league during the summer of 1988. At Temple, Mr. Kilgore started all 124 games during his four-year career under Hall of Fame head coach John Chaney. A 6-9 forward/guard, he scored 1,471 points, pulled down 627 rebounds, dished 380 assists and made 148 steals for his career. His Temple teams won 79 games and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments, including the 1991 Elite Eight.
Mr. Kilgore earned third team All-Atlantic 10 honors during his senior year in 1991-92 when he led the Owls in scoring with a 14.5 average, one of three seasons averaging in double figures. A two-time second team all-Big 5 performer, he was the team’s second leading scorer on the 1991 Elite Eight squad with a 14.0 scoring average.
Mascot Double Trouble: Hooter and StellaTemple Athletics has both a traditional and a live mascot cheering on its teams, as Hooter the Owl and Stella can both often be found on the sidelines. To honor Temple’s beginning as a night school for ambitious young people, the nocturnal owl was adopted as its mascot. The owl represents wisdom and knowledge and is known for being per-ceptive, resourceful and courageous. Hooter the Owl is a part of Temple’s Spirit Squad, making appearances games, alumni events and more. Each February, mascots from all over the city of Philadelphia come to Temple to celebrate Hooter's birthday at a home basketball game, which will take place this season on Sunday, Feb. 18 against Houston.
Stella, a great horned owl, began her career as Temple’s live mascot in 2013. Though she’s small—just 2 feet tall and only 3 pounds—Stella is a mighty predator, with an impressive 60-inch wingspan and talons capable of crushing prey with 28 pounds of force per square inch. She resides in the Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, Pa., where she also is a wildlife conservation teacher. Stella originally hails from Washington state. Her favorite foods include rodents, rabbits and snakes.
