It has been six years since the College of Charleston men’s basketball team (25-9) last punched its ticket to the National Invitation Tournament. The fifth-seeded Cougars are making their fifth all-time NIT appearance and will face fourth-seeded Colorado State (23-11) in the first round on Tuesday, March 14, at 9 p.m. (ET) / 7 p.m. (MT) at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. The game will be televised live on ESPN3. It will mark a first-time meeting between both schools who are led by the Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year in Earl Grant and Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in Larry Eustachy. The College last played in the NIT in 2011 – still the longest postseason tournament run in program history (quarterfinals) to date – and Colorado State in 2015. The Cougars have won six of their last seven games of the season, while the Rams have won nine of their last 11. Both squads reached the championship game of their respective league tournament as the No. 2 seeds – CofC a 78-69 loss to top-seeded UNCW on March 6 and CSU a 79-71 loss to top-seeded Nevada on March 11. The defensive-minded Cougars currently rank No. 25 in the nation in scoring defense (64.1 ppg) and No. 13 in three-point field-goal percentage defense (30.7%), while the Rams are No. 27 in field-goal percentage defense (40.4%) and No. 24 three-point field-goal percentage defense (31.2%). Both teams also handle the ball well as the Cougars rank No. 11 in turnovers per game (10.4 avg.) and CSU No. 22 (10.9 avg.). The winner of the first-round game will advance to second-round action against either top-seeded Cal (21-12) or eighth-seeded CSU Bakersfield (22-9) slated for March 16-20. The quarterfinals will then be held on March 21 and 22, while both semifinal games will be played on Tuesday, March 28, and the championship game on Thursday, March 30, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

The Rams finished second in the final league standings with a 13-5 record after being picked to finish seventh. College of Charleston sophomore forward Jarrell Brantley and Colorado State senior forward Emmanuel Omogbo will go head-to-head on Tuesday. Brantley has recorded 11 double-doubles on the season including four in the Cougars’ last five games and Omogbo 20 double-doubles – which leads the Mountain West and ranks seventh among NCAA statistical leaders. Omogbo also ranks 10th nationally in defensive rebounds per game (7.65 avg.), while Brantley ranks 41st (6.59 avg.) and is second most in the CAA.
H C E A R L G R A N T Head Coach Earl Grant, 39, was named the 23rd men’s basketball head coach at College of Charleston in September of 2014.
A former Lowcountry prep star out of R.B. Stall High
School, Grant joined the company of CofC coaching greats Alfred von Kolnitz (1924-26), Ernest Wehman (two tenures from 1933-42, 1957-58), Willard Silcox, Sr. (three tenures: 1943-44, 1948-53, 1955-56), Fred Daniels (1968-70), Alan LeForce (1970-79), the program’s all-time winningest coach John Kresse (1979-2002) and Bobby Cremins (2006-12).
In his second season with the Cougars, he and his staff turned the program into one of the most improved in NCAA Division I and developed four all-conference players including Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and All-CAA Third Team selection Jarrell Brantley - the first freshman to receive such honors since 2006.
The Cougars also finished the 2015-16 season ranked No. 8 in the nation in scoring defense holding opponents to an average of 62.0 points per game - the seventh-lowest average in the program’s NCAA Division I era. They also limited 16 of their 18 CAA opponents to 65 points or less and allowed a league-low 59.2 points per game in conference play. In addition, CofC went 9-4 in non-conference action including an upset of preseason Top-25 ranked LSU and projected No. 1 NBA Draft pick Ben Simmons on November 30, 2015 at TD Arena.
Known as a top recruiter, Grant has also signed back-to-back recruiting classes that will help the Cougars contend for CAA Championships. He previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Clemson under Brad Brownell, where he made a positive impact on the Tiger men’s basketball program, both in recruiting and with player development. He worked primarily with Clemson’s point guards.
A native of North Charleston, S.C., Grant earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Georgia College in 2000. He and his wife, Jacci, a 2001 College of Charleston graduate receiving a degree in elementary education, have three sons: Trey (9), Eyzaiah (8) and Elonzo (5).

“Colorado State is a very good team. They play in a very good league and made it to the Mountain West Conference championship game and lost to Nevada. They are well coached and talented. It will be a great challenge for us to play another great team on their home court. I am really happy for our players and coaches. They put so much hard work into being able to play in a postseason tournament. It is great to be rewarded for our efforts this season. Hopefully, we can continue to advance.” – College of Charleston Head Coach Earl Grant on playing Colorado State in the NIT First Round
“It’s a climb and it was fun. It’s everything you could want in a college basketball game. We got a taste of what it is like and we will be back. We look forward to playing in the postseason.” – Redshirt Junior Guard Joe Chealey on playing in the CAA championship game and building on the future
“Every day we step on the court, we are hungry. That’s the type of team that we have. We will be hungry every time we have a chance to play.” – Sophomore Forward Jarrell Brantley after the CAA championship game on playing in the postseason and building on next season
