GAME PREVIEW
Over the last five years since the College of Charleston (12-6, 3-3 CAA) joined the Colonial Athletic Association in 2013, no other team has fit the mold of being a replacement for Davidson as a conference rival more so than UNCW (5-13, 2-4 CAA). Be it the close proximity of both schools or that the Cougars and Seahawks reside in two of the most beautiful coastal cities in the Southeastern U.S., it will be a hard-fought battle as both programs face-off for the first time in a rematch of last year’s CAA title game on Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m. (ET) at TD Arena. While UNCW may have a different look under new coaching leadership, junior big man Devontae Cacok (17.5 ppg and 12.9 rpg) and senior guard Jordon Talley (16.1 ppg) return for the defending league champions as do CofC’s starting five from a year ago in CAA All-Tournament Team selections Joe Chealey (17.6 ppg) and Jarrell Brantley (17.4 ppg) for the preseason league favorites. The Cougars are the only Colonial squad that remains undefeated at home with a perfect 8-0 mark, but are 0-3 in league play on the road looking to rebound from a 63-58 loss at Elon on Jan. 13. As a team, CofC currently ranks No. 44 in the nation in scoring defense holding opponents to a league-best 65.8 points per game and No. 14 in fewest turnovers.
UNCW AT-A-GLANCE
Under first-year head coach C.B. McGrath, UNCW is scoring 80.1 points per game which is second-most in the CAA behind William & Mary (86.4 ppg). The Seahawks have had three overtime games this season including in back-to-back contests at Elon (W, 80-78) on Jan. 11 and Northeastern (L, 77-81) on Jan. 13. They picked up their first league win in a 107-87 victory over Drexel on Jan. 2. It marked the third time this season the team had surpassed the 100-point scoring mark in a single game.
WHAT 2 WATCH 4
CofC junior forward Jarrell Brantley (999) and senior guard Cameron Johnson (996) will look to join the 1,000 Career-Point Club against UNCW. Brantley is one point and Johnson four points shy of becoming only the 35th and 36th all-time players (NCAA Division I and NAIA) in school history to do so. Brantley, who has grabbed 572 career rebounds to date, could become one of only 12 players all-time to record 1,000 career points and 600 rebounds (28 shy) in a career at The College.
GAME PROMOTIONS
Fans are encouraged to wear white to the White Out Game versus UNCW on Thursday at TD Arena. The first 1,000 CofC students will receive free T-Shirts. Free “fandanas” provided by Coca-Cola and white rally towels will be handed out to fans (while supplies last). Military, veterans and first responders (with valid ID) can purchase tickets for $5.

SERIES NOTES
UNCW leads 13-11 in the all-time series with College of Charleston. Last season, the Cougars snapped an eight-game skid in the series between the two Coastal schools winning a 67-66 road thriller on Feb. 2, 2017 in Wilmington, N.C. The last five contests have been decided in single digits. Prior to CofC’s conference realignment, both programs previously met in non-conference play each year from the 2001-02 season through the 2008-09 season.

TAKING ADVANTAGE OF CHARITY
The Cougars have attempted 378 free throws this season in which they have converted 285 for a 75.4 percent accuracy from the charity stripe this season. That percentage ranks No. 44 in the country and second best in the league behind William & Mary (.819). Joe Chealey, the school-record holder for career free throws made (479), ranks No. 20 nationally in free throws made (108) and No. 24 in free throws attempted (129). He is shooting 83.7 percent from the charity stripe this season, which is fifth best in the CAA. In conference games only, Chealey has gone 46-of-51 (6th, 90.2%) and Jarrell Brantley 23-of-26 (8th, 88.5%).
HITTING ON ALL CYLINDERS
The Cougars are currently averaging 71.3 points per game this season – the highest scoring output during the Earl Grant Era. They have scored more than 70 points in a single game on eight occasions this year with two in the 90-point range. Behind their signature defense, Charleston has seen a steady climb on the offensive end in regards to scoring and field-goal percentage from Year 1 to Year 4 under Grant.
Grant Riller is having a breakout season for the Cougars. Since missing one game of the season at the Great Alaska Shootout over the Thanksgiving holiday break, he has been explosive with double-figure performances in 10-of-11 games since. Riller currently is ninth among CAA leading scorers averaging 15.8 points per game and is one of seven players in the Colonial this season to reach the 30-point mark in a single game with a career-high 31 versus South Carolina State on Dec. 19. He also knocked down 21 points against Atlantic 10 Conference favorite Rhode Island on Dec. 16.

COUGARS ADD TRANSFER MILLER
Former Dayton 6-foot-9 forward Sam Miller (Arlington, Va.) has enrolled at the College of Charleston and joined the men’s basketball team. Miller, who played two seasons for the Flyers averaging 3.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game, will not be able to play immediately and is subject to NCAA transfer rules. He was a first-team all-conference selection leading then No. 7 nationally-ranked Gonzaga College High School in the Washington, D.C. area to a Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC) Championship title in 2015. “We are really excited to have Sam join our program,” CofC Head Coach Earl Grant said. “He is a young man that we watched and evaluated while he was in high school. We believe he will be a great addition to our program on the court and in the classroom.”
CHEALEY AMONG THE ALL-TIME GREATS
Team co-captain Joe Chealey gained entrance into the Top 10 on the all-time career scorers list at the College of Charleston (NCAA Division I and NAIA). He has tabulated 1,532 career points to date and surpassed former CofC great Steven Johnson, who recorded 1,456 points from 1984-88, Tony White, Jr. (1,499), Marion Busby (1,504) and Jeff Bolton (1,527). Chealey has scored in double figures in 17-of-18 games this season including six 20-point performances. He also is tied for 14th all-time in career assists (346).

Head Coach Earl Grant, 40, is in his fourth season at the College of Charleston. He was named the 23rd men’s basketball head coach in program history in September of 2014.
A former Lowcountry prep star out of R.B. Stall High School, Grant joined the company of CofC coaching greats Alfred von Kolnitz (1924-26), Ernest Wehman (two tenures from 1933-42, 1957-58), Willard Silcox, Sr. (three tenures: 1943-44, 1948-53, 1955-56), Fred Daniels (1968-70), Alan LeForce (1970-79), the program’s all-time winningest coach John Kresse (1979-2002) and Bobby Cremins (2006-12).
In 2016-17, Grant led the Cougars to a 25-10 overall record and 14-4 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play. It marked the program’s first 20-win campaign since 2013. Charleston, seeded a program-best No. 2, advanced to the championship game of the CAA Tournament for the first time since CofC joined the Colonial in 2013. They were also selected and made their fifth all-time appearance in the Postseason NIT. It was their first postseason berth (NCAA or NIT) since 2011.
“Our men’s basketball program’s success on-and-off the court is the direct result of Earl Grant’s leadership and commitment to the College of Charleston,” CofC Director of Athletics Matt Roberts said. “He and his staff have done a tremendous job in just three short years of turning our program into a competitive one in the CAA. We feel he is on the verge of taking us to the next level and national stage.”
In his second season with the Cougars, he and his staff turned the program into one of the most improved in NCAA Division I and developed four all-conference players including Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year and All-CAA Third Team selection Jarrell Brantley – the first freshman to receive such honors since 2006.
The Cougars also finished the 2015-16 season ranked No. 8 in the nation in scoring defense holding opponents to an average of 62.0 points per game – the seventh-lowest average in the program’s NCAA Division I era. They also limited 16 of their 18 CAA opponents to 65 points or less and allowed a league-low 59.2 points per game in conference play. In addition, CofC went 9-4 in non-conference action including an upset of preseason Top-25 ranked LSU and projected No. 1 NBA Draft pick Ben Simmons on November 30, 2015 at TD Arena.
Known as a top recruiter, Grant has also signed back-to-back recruiting classes that will help the Cougars contend for CAA Championships. He previously spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Clemson under Brad Brownell, where he made a positive impact on the Tiger men’s basketball program, both in recruiting and with player development. He worked primarily with Clemson’s point guards.
Prior to Clemson, Grant spent six years as an assistant coach under former College of Charleston assistant coach Gregg Marshall, the last three for him at Wichita State from 2007-10.
With Grant on board, the Shockers made gradual improvement each season, culminating with a 25-10 overall record and 12-6 Missouri Valley Conference mark in 2009-10. The Shockers advanced to the championship game of the MVC Tournament and also earned a bid to the National Invitation Tournament.
In three seasons at Winthrop University under Marshall from 2004-07, Grant helped the Eagles to three-consecutive Big South Conference Championships and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances.
Prior to joining Marshall’s staff at Winthrop, Grant was an assistant coach at crosstown rival The Citadel from 2002-04.
A native of North Charleston, S.C., Grant earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Georgia College in 2000. He and his wife, Jacci, a 2001 College of Charleston graduate receiving a degree in elementary education, have three sons: Trey (11), Eyzaiah (9) and Elonzo (6).

COUGAR SOUND BITES
“We had two games last week. We played really well in one (against Northeastern), and the next one, we didn’t play quite as well (at Elon). It’s the next game up and we know it’s going to be a great challenge. All of the games that we have seen so far in conference play have been very challenging and have come down to a few possessions. We will have to have a great game plan and play well to be successful. They (UNCW) are scoring a lot of points. They play fast, shoot it and don’t press as much. They will challenge our defense and we have to be sharp on Thursday.” – CofC Head Coach Earl Grant on the rematch with UNCW
“We had troubles on the road last year, but we just happened to win those close games. We won last year at James Madison by one and at Delaware in a close game. This year, we went to Towson and didn’t play well. We lost on the road to Drexel by one-or-two shots. It’s similar to last year, but we just made a few more shots than the other team. We didn’t play well enough in our last two road games. Last year, in those same situations, we won those road games by making a shot down the stretch. We have to continue to work at it, stay the course and understand we want to be playing at our highest level at the end of the season.” – Coach Grant on the team’s road struggles
“For the most part, they (UNCW) have a new team and their energy will be different than last year. But, it’s still another CAA game and another tough opponent we have to prepare for.” CofC Sophomore Guard Grant Riller on the rematch with UNCW
“Just being comfortable. We practice in here (TD Arena) every day and the fans provide us with a great support system. No matter where you are, it’s easier to play at home. On the road, you have to be 10 points better. Every team has been giving us their best shot. We know when we go into another arena, we have to be 10 points better.” – Riller on the team’s success at home in comparison to the team’s recent road struggles
